BACKGROUND: An adverse event (AE) is defined as an unintended injury or complication caused by healthcare management rather than the disease process that may prolong admission and lead to disability or death. This study retrospectively assessed all reported general surgery-related AEs in a district general hospital in the south-east of England.
METHODS: All general surgical AEs arising from adult inpatient admissions between 2002 and 2007, that had been reported to the risk management team, following completion of the standard 'Adverse Incident Report Form', were retrospectively reviewed.

OBJECTIVE: to verify the occurrence and the causes of hospital readmissions within a year after discharge from hospitalizations due to traffic accidents.
METHODS: victims of multiple traumas due to traffic accidents were included, who were admitted to an Intensive Care Unit. Sociodemographic data, accident circumstances, body regions affected and cause of readmission were collected from the patient histories.

In this investigation, we sought to investigate the characteristics of Citrobacter spp. infections. A retrospective cohort study in a 700-bed, tertiary care, university hospital was carried out during the period from June 1994 to January 2006. The results of treatment of 32 patients with spleen diseases who have undergone laparoscopic splenectomy (LSE) are analyzed. Surgery was performed most often for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Some technical features of surgery are discussed. It is demonstrated that high-technology methods (suturing device "EndoGia", electrosurgical unit "LigaSure") increase reliability of hemostasis, decrease blood loss during surgery and reduce time of surgery. Nosocomial urinary tract infection is the most common type of sepsis in the post-surgical patient. This paper presents our experience with 218 nosocomial urinary infections (34.93% of our postoperative infections) which complicated the postoperative course of 1002 (21.75%) urethral catheterized patients out of a total of 5950 (3.6%) operated on and under study individuals. In this descriptive study, three hundred and sixty one patients with head injuries were studied over an eighteen month period. The age distribution showed two peaks at 0-5 years and 25-35 years. The commonest cause of head injuries was road traffic accidents (40.3%) followed by assault causing trauma to the head (30.5%). The overall mortality rate for patients with head injuries was 30.8% with an age distribution peak at 25-35 years. Associated injuries were found in 165 (45.7%) patients. Complications due to head injuries occurred in 43 (16.5%) patients.

The purpose of our study was to audit colorectal cancer surgery in a large district hospital, compare our results with other series and highlight any areas in patient management where improvements could be made. Phenytoin is used for the treatment and prevention of fits. We investigated all patients reported to have phenytoin allergy in our hospital and found 42 confirmed cases. Sixty-nine percent were female and 83.3% were Chinese. The mean age of the patients was 46.5 years.
