[The parasite-host specificity of the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei (Acariformes: Sarcoptidae) in man and animals (a review of the literature)].

The primary parasitic relations between the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei (L.) and man are confirmed indirectly by the presence in the family Sarcoptidae of close genera, members of which parasitize primates. Judging from the composition of domestic and wild animals-hosts, the source of their infection with S. scabiei was man that gave rise to numerous forms of mites specific to individual species of hosts or their related groups belonging to different taxonomic ranks. Three types of host relations and, accordingly, forms of sarcoptosis are suggested at the infection from an alien host: pseudosa

Divergent co-transcriptomes of different host cells infected with Toxoplasma gondii reveal cell type-specific host-parasite interactions.

The apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii infects various cell types in avian and mammalian hosts including humans. Infection of immunocompetent hosts is mostly asymptomatic or benign, but leads to development of largely dormant bradyzoites that persist predominantly within neurons and muscle cells. Here we have analyzed the impact of the host cell type on the co-transcriptomes of host and parasite using high-throughput RNA sequencing. Murine cortical neurons and astrocytes, skeletal muscle cells (SkMCs) and fibroblasts differed by more than 16,200 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) befor

Studies on host specificity in Paragonimus westermani: I. Ultrastructural characterization of metacercariae and juvenile and adult worms from abnormal and definitive hosts.

Comparative ultrastructural studies have been made of newly excysted metacercariae and worms recovered from abnormal (rats) and normal definitive hosts (dogs). Worms from rats survived for prolonged periods without any growth or development in muscles of the host. They appeared to resemble metacercariae in general features, although ultrastructural observations revealed differences in the composition of tegumental granules and the development of the excretory bladder and caeca. Worms from dogs showed well-developed morphology in association with active energy metabolism and biosynthesis.

Interaction Differences of the Avian Host-Specific Salmonella enterica Serovar Gallinarum, the Host-Generalist S. Typhimurium, and the Cattle Host-Adapted S. Dublin with Chicken Primary Macrophage.

Most Salmonella serovars cause disease in many host species, while a few serovars have evolved to be host specific. Very little is known about the mechanisms that contribute to Salmonella host specificity. We compared the interactions between chicken primary macrophages (CDPM) and host-generalist serovar Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, host-adapted Salmonella enterica serovar Dublin, and avian host-specific Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum. S Gallinarum was taken up in lower numbers by CDPM than S Typhimurium and S Dublin; however, a higher survival rate was observed for this se

Host-specific pathogenicity of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora in Galleria mellonella and Plodia interpunctella larvae.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are useful as biological agents for the control of insect pests and disease vectors. They are also important for understanding nematode pathogenicity and host anti-nematode response. The pathogenic properties of EPNs towards insects are attributed to effector molecules, which are produced by both the nematodes and their symbiotic bacteria during infection. Here, we hypothesized that the contribution of the mutualistic bacterium Photorhabdus luminescens to the virulence of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora is host-dependent. To test this hypothesis, we compared the

Host-specific soil oomycete communities are spatially repeatable across natural grasslands.

Soil oomycetes contain some of the most devastating plant pathogens, and are widespread within the soil microbiome, yet how individual plant species structure oomycete communities in natural soils, and whether any such structuring is consistent across space, remains poorly resolved. Because host-specific pathogen accumulation is a central prediction of plant-soil feedback theory but is rarely tested outside greenhouse conditions, we focused on whether the host-specific fraction of these communities is preferentially pathogenic. Using oomycete-specific ITS amplicons, we sequenced rhizosphere-as

Decoding host-microbial dynamics in peri-implantitis: Ecosystem-specific experimental models.

BACKGROUND: Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory disease arising within a unique host-microbial-biomaterial ecosystem. Unlike periodontitis, peri-implant tissues lack a periodontal ligament and epithelial junction integrity and interface with metal oxides on titanium surfaces. The inflammatory changes in peri-implant disease not only affect the host but also extend to the implant surfaces, which undergo corrosion and particle release. These specific ecological features must be accurately captured in preclinical experimental models to provide mechanistic insight and enable translational success.

Transcriptional profiling specifies the pathogen-specific human host response to infectious keratitis.

PURPOSE: Corneal infections are a leading cause of visual impairment and blindness worldwide. Here we applied high-resolution transcriptomic profiling to assess the general and pathogen-specific molecular and cellular mechanisms during human corneal infection. METHODS: Clinical diagnoses of herpes simplex virus (HSV) (n=5) and bacterial/fungal (n=5) keratitis were confirmed by histology. Healthy corneas (n=7) and keratoconus (n=4) samples served as controls. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) human corneal specimens were analyzed using the 3' RNA sequencing method Massive Analysis of cD

Persistence of obligate intracellular pathogens: alternative strategies to overcome host-specific stresses.

In adapting to the intracellular niche, obligate intracellular bacteria usually undergo a reduction of genome size by eliminating genes not needed for intracellular survival. These losses can include, for example, genes involved in nutrient anabolic pathways or in stress response. Living inside a host cell offers a stable environment where intracellular bacteria can limit their exposure to extracellular effectors of the immune system and modulate or outright inhibit intracellular defense mechanisms. However, highlighting an area of vulnerability, these pathogens are dependent on the host cell

Sex-Specific Modulation of the Host Transcriptome in the Spleen of Schistosoma mansoni-Infected Mice.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a severe parasitic disease that is primarily driven by the host's immune response to schistosome eggs trapped in tissue and by the granulomatous inflammatory and fibrotic reaction they cause. Despite significant progress in understanding the complex immunological processes involved in the relationship between schistosomes and their host, neither an effective vaccine against the infection nor anti-fibrotic drugs currently exists, making the search for new targets for schistosome drugs and vaccine candidates even more important. In order to identify new molecular t

Host and Species-Specificities of Pattern Recognition Receptors Upon Infection With Leptospira interrogans.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infectious disease affecting all vertebrates. It is caused by species of the genus Leptospira, among which are the highly pathogenic L. interrogans. Different mammals can be either resistant or susceptible to the disease which can present a large variety of symptoms. Humans are mostly asymptomatic after infection but can have in some cases symptoms varying from a flu-like syndrome to more severe forms such as Weil's disease, potentially leading to multiorgan failure and death. Similarly, cattle, pigs, and horses can suffer from acute forms of the disease, including

Tissue and host species-specific transcriptional changes in models of experimental visceral leishmaniasis.

Background: Human visceral leishmaniasis, caused by infection with Leishmania donovani or L. infantum, is a potentially fatal disease affecting 50,000-90,000 people yearly in 75 disease endemic countries, with more than 20,000 deaths reported. Experimental models of infection play a major role in understanding parasite biology, host-pathogen interaction, disease pathogenesis, and parasite transmission. In addition, they have an essential role in the identification and pre-clinical evaluation of new drugs and vaccines. However, our understanding of these models remains fragmentary. Although the

Investigating the Dynamics of MCMV-Specific CD8+ T Cell Responses in Individual Hosts.

Infection by Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is characterized by the massive expansion and continued maintenance of CMV-specific CD8+ T cells for certain CMV-derived peptides. This phenomenon called "memory inflation" has made CMV a primary target for the generation of T cell based vaccine vectors against various diseases. However, many aspects concerning the generation and maintenance of the inflationary CD8+ T cell response still remain to be resolved. In this study, we combined experimental data and mathematical models to analyze the dynamics of circulatory inflationary CD8+ T cells within individual

Global analysis of Borrelia burgdorferi genes regulated by mammalian host-specific signals.

Lyme disease is a tick-borne infection that can lead to chronic, debilitating problems if not recognized or treated appropriately. Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, is maintained in nature by a complex enzootic cycle involving Ixodes ticks and mammalian hosts. Many previous studies support the notion that B. burgdorferi differentially expresses numerous genes and proteins to help it adapt to growth in the mammalian host. In this regard, several studies have utilized a dialysis membrane chamber (DMC) cultivation system to generate "mammalian host-adapted" spirochetes fo

Arthropod- and host-specific Borrelia burgdorferi bbk32 expression and the inhibition of spirochete transmission.

Antisera to BBK32 (a Borrelia burgdorferi fibronectin-binding protein) and BBK50, two Ags synthesized during infection, protect mice from experimental syringe-borne Lyme borreliosis. Therefore, B. burgdorferi bbk32 and bbk50 expression within Ixodes scapularis ticks and the murine host, and the effect of BBK32 and BBK50 antisera on spirochetes throughout the vector-host life cycle were investigated. bbk32 and bbk50 mRNA and protein were first detected within engorged ticks, demonstrating regulated expression within the vector. Then bbk32 expression increased in mice at the cutaneous site of in

Regulatory role of heat shock protein-specific T cells in host defense.

During infection with L.monocytogenes, a facultative intracellular bacteria, TcR gamma/delta T cells specific for 65 kd hsp precede TcR alpha/beta T cells specific for the listerial antigens in appearance. The gamma/delta T cells provide a first line of defense against the infection by recognizing exogenous and endogenous 65 kd hsp on infected cells and producing cytokines such as gamma IFN. The hsp-specific T cells respond quickly to antigenically diverse pathogens before antigen-specific T cells expand clonally, and they play a role in covering the gap between the phagocytic system and highl

Specific inhibition of the graft-versus-host reaction in fetal or neonatal liver chimeras.

The fetal liver chimera system was used as a model to study the nature of transplantation tolerance in radiation chimeras. A permanent state of tolerance was induced in (C3H/eb times C57BL/6)F1 irradiated mice after reconstitution with parental C57BL/6 fetal or neonatal liver cells. It was found that although enough host hemopoietic cells were present in such chimeras to provide antigenic stimulation, subsequent inoculation of these chimeras with C57BL/6 immunocompetent cells syngeneic to liver donor cells specifically abolished their response against the host. In addition, cells obtained from

Specificity Analysis of Alternative Splicing During Botrytis cinerea Infection of Different Hosts.

Alternative splicing (AS) is a significant post-transcriptional regulatory mechanism that facilitates environmental adaptation in fungi. However, the conservation of this mechanism and its host specificity during the infection of various hosts by B. cinerea remain ambiguous. This study utilized strand-specific RNA sequencing to perform a comparative analysis of genome-wide AS patterns during the infection of tomato and strawberry by B. cinerea. A comparative analysis identified a total of 1714 AS events and 1130 associated genes across the two hosts, alongside a significant number of host-spec

Host-specific microbiomes of blow flies: ecological drivers and implications for pathogen carriage.

Blow flies (Lucilia sericata and Phormia regina) are necrophagous insects that interact with dense microbial reservoirs and are opportunistic vectors of human and animal pathogens. Despite constant exposure to diverse environmental microbes, it is unclear whether their bacterial communities are primarily acquired stochastically or shaped by host factors that could influence pathogen carriage. We conducted a systematic comparison of wild L. sericata and P. regina collected from seven cities across an urban-rural gradient to determine whether microbiome composition is structured by host species
