BACKGROUND: Many species of mosquitoes, including the major malaria vector Anopheles gambiae, utilize carbon dioxide (CO(2)) and 1-octen-3-ol as olfactory cues in host-seeking behaviors that underlie their vectorial capacity. However, the molecular and cellular basis of such olfactory responses remains largely unknown.
RESULTS: Here, we use molecular and physiological approaches coupled with systematic functional analyses to define the complete olfactory sensory map of the An. gambiae maxillary palp, an olfactory appendage that mediates the detection of these compounds. In doing so, we identi

West Nile virus (WNV) is an important cause of disease in humans and animals. Risk of WNV infection varies seasonally, with the greatest risk during the warmest parts of the year due in part to the accelerated extrinsic incubation rate of the virus in mosquitoes. Rates of extrinsic incubation have been shown in constant-temperature studies to increase as an approximately linear function of temperature, but for other vector-borne pathogens, such as malaria or dengue virus, nonlinear relationships have been demonstrated under cycling temperatures near the thermal limits of pathogen replication.

Mosquito-borne diseases, particularly malaria, remain a major global health challenge. Among different mosquitoes, Anopheles are solely responsible for malaria. Insecticide-based interventions such as insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) are central to mosquito control. However, the widespread emergence of insecticide resistance, especially to pyrethroids, the most commonly used insecticides for mosquito worldwide, threatens their effectiveness. While genetic and metabolic mechanisms of resistance are well characterized, behavioral and sequestration-based mechanis

Olfaction is important in ticks' host-seeking and mating behaviors, as it enables them to detect volatile chemical compounds. This scoping review aims to systematically map and synthesize the existing literature on olfactory gene families in ticks and to examine the application of functional genomics or behavioral approaches. We conducted a thorough search in five databases for publications up to 19 September 2025. This scoping review was implemented according to the Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. A total of 15 studies were included

Lyme disease (LD) risk is emerging rapidly in Canada due to range expansion of its tick vectors, accelerated by climate change. The risk of contracting LD varies geographically due to variability in ecological characteristics that determine the hazard (the densities of infected host-seeking ticks) and vulnerability of the human population determined by their knowledge and adoption of preventive behaviors. Risk maps are commonly used to support public health decision-making on Lyme disease, but the ability of the human public to adopt preventive behaviors is rarely taken into account in their d

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is a medically-important mosquito vector that transmits arboviruses including yellow fever, dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses to humans. The mosquito exhibits typical sexually dimorphic behaviors such as courtship, mating, host seeking, bloodfeeding, and oviposition. All these behaviors are mainly regulated by the brain; however, little is known about the function and neuron composition of the mosquito brain. In this study, we generated an initial atlas of the adult male and female brain of Ae. aegypti using 10xGenomics based single-nucleus RNA sequencing.

Neurodevelopmental conditions such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are usually framed as brain-based disorders driven by genetics and neurotransmitter imbalance. At the same time, converging evidence implicates the gut-brain axis and intestinal immunity in shaping cognition and behavior. In this Hypothesis and Theory article, I propose that a subset of ADHD and related neurodivergent profiles can be usefully conceptualized as neurointestinal syndromes, emerging from co-evolutionary interactions between the gut microbiota, intestinal parasites, and host immunity. Drawing on d

Brucella ovis is a non-zoonotic Brucella species lacking specific vaccine. It presents a narrow host range, a unique biology relative to other Brucella species, and important distinct surface properties. To increase our knowledge on its peculiar surface and virulence features, and seeking to develop a specific vaccine, multiple mutants for nine relevant cell-envelope-related genes were investigated. Mutants lacking Omp10 plus Omp19 could not be obtained, suggesting that at least one of these lipoproteins is required for viability. A similar result was obtained for the double deletion of omp31

Flight responses of the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann, to widely-spaced (>130 m) traps baited with pine volatiles (in turpentine) and the female-produced pheromone component frontalin were enhanced when a bait containing the male pheromone component (+)-endo-brevicomin was attached directly to the trap. However, displacing this bait 4-16 m horizontally from the trap significantly increased its synergistic effect. (+)-endo-Brevicomin enhanced catch to the same degree when the bait was positioned either on the trap or 32 m away. In another experiment, pairs of frontalin

Mosquitoes threaten over half of the world's population through vectored diseases such as malaria, zika, yellow fever, dengue, and chikungunya. Mosquitoes have a highly developed olfactory system attuned to chemotaxis relating to host-seeking, mating, and oviposition behavior. In this study, we aimed to determine the spatial efficacy of 2 plant-based repellent blends (Blend3 and Blend4 that had previously been found to successfully repel Aedes, Anopheles and Culex mosquitoes in wind tunnel assays) in excluding Aedes aegypti from the window entry. A new cage system was developed for parallel "n

BACKGROUND: With no effective drugs or widely available vaccines, dengue control in Bangladesh is dependent on targeting the primary vector Aedes aegypti with insecticides and larval source management. Despite these interventions, the dengue burden is increasing in Bangladesh, and the country experienced its worst outbreak in 2019 with 101 354 hospitalized cases. This may be partially facilitated by the presence of intense insecticide resistance in vector populations. Here, we describe the intensity and mechanisms of resistance to insecticides commonly deployed against Ae. aegypti in Dhaka, Ba

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Historically, researchers and clinicians have assumed that patients engage and initiate treatment for Tourette syndrome to reduce tic severity. As a result, current gold-standard assessment methods and intervention studies focus on global tic reduction. However, initial community-engaged work suggests that patients seek tic treatment for reasons beyond symptom reduction (e.g., impairment), and a host of previous research has shown an inconclusive relationship between tic severity and impairment. The aim of this study was to qualitatively examine patient-reported tic-

INTRODUCTION: Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) due to Rickettsia conorii is the most important tick-borne disease occurring in North Africa. However, there are only a few fragmentary reports on the epidemiology and clinical aspects of rickettsioses in North Africa, and cases are still rarely documented. We report herein a prospective study conducted in Oran, the second largest city in Algeria. This disease has not been properly described in Oran or in other Algerian cities.
METHODS: A total of 167 cases of Mediterranean spotted fever were documented for the first time by the use of reference

Tuberculosis remains a daunting public health concern in many countries of the world. A consistent observation in the global epidemiology of tuberculosis is an excess of cases of active pulmonary tuberculosis among males compared with females. Data from both humans and animals also suggest that males are more susceptible than females to develop active pulmonary disease. Similarly, male sex has been associated with poor treatment outcomes. Despite this growing body of evidence, little is known about the mechanisms driving sex bias in tuberculosis disease. Two dominant hypotheses have been propo

Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille) is a species complex that spans North, Central, and South America and which is a key vector of all known discrete typing units (DTU) of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiologic agent of Chagas disease. Morphological and genetic studies indicate that T. dimidiata is a species complex with three principal haplogroups (hg) in Mexico. Different markers and traits are still inconclusive regarding if other morphological differentiation may indicate probable behavioral and vectorial divergences within this complex. In this paper we compared the antennae of three Mexican haplogr

BACKGROUND: Releasing considerable numbers of radiation-sterilized males is a promising strategy to suppress mosquito vectors. However, releases may also include small percentages of biting females, which translate to non-negligible numbers when releases are large. Currently, the effects of irradiation on host-seeking and host-biting behaviors have not been exhaustively investigated. Information is also lacking regarding the effects of sterilizing treatment on the endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia, which is known to affect the vector competence of infected mosquitos.

BACKGROUND: Most malaria vectors belong to species complexes. Sibling species often exhibit divergent behaviors dictating the measures that can be deployed effectively in their control. Despite the importance of the Anopheles funestus complex in malaria transmission in sub-Saharan Africa, sibling species have rarely been identified in the past and their vectoring potential remains understudied.
METHODS: We analyzed 1149 wild-caught An. funestus (senso lato) specimens from 21 sites in Kenya, covering the major malaria endemic areas including western, central and coastal areas. Indoor and outdo

The riverine tsetse fly Glossina fuscipes fuscipes is a major vector of trypanosome pathogens causing African trypanosomiasis. This fly species uses a combination of olfactory and visual cues to locate its hosts. Previously, traps and targets baited with visual cues have been used in vector control, but the development of olfactory-based tools has been challenging. Recently, repellents have shown promise as olfactory-based tools in tsetse vector control. Here, we evaluated a three-component blend comprising 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, acetophenone and geranyl acetone (blend K), previously identif

This study evaluated efficacy of oral delivery of the systemic acaricide moxidectin to a confined, wild, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimmermann; WTD) herd in late fall, when adult blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis Say) are known to actively seek hosts in the northeastern United States. Moxidectin-treated corn was dispensed using timed-release feeders at a fenced study site in Connecticut during fall 2021 and 2022. White-tailed deer were captured and sampled four times each year to measure moxidectin levels in sera and assess adult I. scapularis burdens. Results documented that

Urgency reflects the tendency to act rashly in the face of intense emotion and has been associated with a host of maladaptive outcomes spanning psychopathology domains, including substance use, anxiety-related disorders, and suicide risk. Despite the impairment associated with urgency, work seeking to understand the neural mechanisms of this cognitive-affective risk factor has yielded inconsistent results, suggesting the need for new approaches to understand why some individuals are more likely to engage in impulsive behaviors in the context of positive and negative emotions.
