Effect of tea polyphenols on sturgeon myofibrillar protein structure in the in vitro anti-glycation model mediated by low temperature vacuum heating.

The binding mechanism between tea polyphenols and sturgeon myofibrillar protein (SMP) in the early stage (0, 2, 4 min), middle stage (6, 10 min) and late stage (15 min) of low temperature vacuum heating (LTVH) in an in vitro anti-glycation model was investigated. The result indicated that the protein cross-linking during LTVH treatment were mainly induced by tea polyphenols. The loss rate of free arginine (Arg) and free lysine (Lys) of SMP at the late stage of LTVH treatment (15 min) was 73.95 % and 83.16 %, respectively. The hydrophobic force and disulfide bond were the main force between tea

Heating temperature dependence of molecular characteristics and biological response for biomass pyrolysis volatile-derived water-dissolved organic matter.

The utilization of biomass pyrolysis volatile-derived water-dissolved organic matter (WOM, often called wood vinegar) determines sustainable recycling of biomass. Further, pyrolysis temperature significantly controls the cracking of biomass components, resulting in various molecular compositions and biological responses of WOM. Although it has been widely used in the agriculture, the relationship between molecular compositions and biological responses affected by heating temperature is still unclear. Here, it was observed that the WOM concentration increased with increasing temperatures and th

The impact of temperature and a chemesthetic cooling agent on lingual roughness sensitivity.

Oral tactile sensitivity underpins food texture perception, but few studies have investigated mechanoreception in oral tissues. During food consumption, oral tissues are exposed to a wide range of temperatures and chemical entities. The objective of the present study was to assess the influence of thermal sensations on lingual roughness sensitivity. Just-noticeable difference thresholds (JNDs) were determined using the staircase method for surface roughness from stainless steel coupons (Ra; 0.177-0.465 µm). Thresholds were assessed when cooling or heating the metal stimuli (n = 32 subjects). C

Temperature influences lipid content in the red harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex barbatus.

Temperature is one of the most important environmental conditions affecting physiological processes in ectothermic organisms like ants. Yet, we often lack information on how certain physiological traits covary with temperature across time. Here, we test predictions on how one trait-lipid content-covaries with temperature using a conspicuous, ground-dwelling harvester ant. We focus on lipid content as fat bodies are metabolically active tissues that are important for storing and releasing energy in response to demand, which could be vital for survival under variable temperatures. From March to

Hydrotherapeutic Heat Application as Support in Febrile Patients: A Scoping Review.

Background: Most often, fever is still treated by lowering body temperature with medication. In complementary and integrative health care, patients are supported during illness to use the positive effects of fever. Accompanying applications from the field of hydrotherapy are often used for gentle cooling, but there are references that warming in fever can also be used as a support. The aim of this scoping review was to identify available evidence on how, when, and why patients with fever are treated with heat application. Methods: The MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, COCHRANE, Google, and Google Schol

Thermal increment provided by inhalation rewarming from hypothermia.

To quantify the core temperature gain derived from inhalation rewarming, 10 subjects were immersed in seawater (mean temperature 12 degrees C) until a 2 degree C drop in rectal temperature occurred, and were then rewarmed by breathing hot saturated air at 45 degrees C for 30 min. Each subject was rewarmed once breathing air and once rebreathing a controlled fraction of expired air adjusted to produce a hyperventilation of 50 l/min. After 30 min of rewarming mean rectal temperature had increased 0.39 degrees C in subjects breathing air compared with 0.77 degrees C in those hyperventilating (P l

Temperature of a test solution influences abdominal symptoms in lactose tolerance tests.

In lactose maldigesters, retarding gastric emptying (food/pharmaceuticals) improves tolerance to lactose. The role of temperature of test solution on the indicators of lactose intolerance was studied. After an overnight fast, 10 lactose maldigesters ingested, in three sessions, 50 g lactose in a randomized cross-over trial. The solutions were at temperatures of 20-21 degrees C (room temperature), 2-3 degrees C (cold) and 55-58 degrees C (hot). Gastrointestinal symptoms and indicators measuring lactose absorption were recorded. Abdominal pain was noticeably increased by the modification of temp

Water Quality as a Predictor of Legionella Positivity of Building Water Systems.

Testing drinking water systems for the presence of Legionella colonization is a proactive approach to assess and reduce the risk of Legionnaires' disease. Previous studies suggest that there may be a link between Legionella positivity in the hot water return line or certain water quality parameters (temperature, free chlorine residual, etc.) with distal site Legionella positivity. It has been suggested that these measurements could be used as a surrogate for testing for Legionella in building water systems. We evaluated the relationship between hot water return line Legionella positivity and o

Hot water bottle burn injuries: a 10-year retrospective analysis of incidence and potential predictors in Germany.

OBJECTIVES: Hot water bottles are widely used for warmth and therapeutic relief, but improper use can lead to burns, ranging from superficial to full-thickness skin injuries. Following the natural gas shortage caused by the complete halt of Russian gas supplies, European countries experienced a sharp increase in hot water bottle-related burns. However, data for Germany were not yet provided. This study examines the incidence of hot water bottle burns over a 10-year period, exploring potential correlations with natural gas prices, natural gas consumption, ambient temperature, and respiratory in

Thermal signatures of biomolecules: an effective tool for screening biological defects.

We investigate the impact of environmental factors and biological defects on the thermal properties of single-helical proteins by analyzing their electronic specific heat (ESH) at constant volume ( C v ). To accurately model these biomolecules, we consider their helical structure and long-range electron hopping within a tight-binding framework. Our findings demonstrate that the ESH spectra can differentiate between defective and pure helical protein molecules, even a sample with a very low contamination (single site defect) level. By comparing the ESH spectra of perfect and defective proteins

Time-Course Changes in Dorsiflexion Range of Motion, Stretch Tolerance, and Shear Elastic Modulus for 20 Minutes of Hot Pack Application.

The application of thermal agents via hot packs is a commonly utilized method. However, the time-course changes in the range of motion (ROM), stretch sensation, shear elastic modulus, and muscle temperature during hot pack application are not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the time-course changes in these variables during a 20-minute hot pack application. Eighteen healthy young men (21.1 ± 0.2 years) participated in this study. We measured the dorsiflexion (DF) ROM, passive torque at DF ROM (an indicator of stretch tolerance), and shear elastic modulus (an indicator of muscle

Legionella prevalence and risk of legionellosis in Hungarian hospitals.

Nosocomial legionellosis is a growing concern worldwide. In Hungary, about 20% of the reported cases are health-care associated, but in the absence of legal regulation, environmental monitoring of Legionella is not routinely performed in hospitals. In the present study, 23 hospitals were investigated. The hot water distribution system was colonized by Legionella in over 90%; counts generally exceeded the public health limit value. Hot water temperature was critically low in all systems (<45 °C), and large differences (3-38 °C temperature drop) were observed within buildings, indicating insuffi
