Development of Sarcopenia Management Systems for Former Homeless Older Adults Residing in Supportive Housing: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Former homeless older adults represent a highly vulnerable population facing substantial community health challenges, including an elevated risk of sarcopenia due to compounded health and social disadvantages. Developing a context-specific management system is crucial for enhancing early detection, prevention, and care within supportive housing settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate the feasibility of a sarcopenia management system for former homeless older adults in Thailand. METHODS: mixed methods design was used, consisting of three phases: (1) developme

Effects of two different broiler flooring systems on production performances, welfare, and environment under commercial production conditions.

Research comparing conventional litter and alternative perforated flooring (netting) systems is relatively limited under commercial production conditions. A comprehensive comparison of broiler production performances, welfare quality, and housing environment of two broiler houses with conventional litter and new perforated plastic floors was conducted over four flocks for eight months in eastern China. The two broiler houses each had 31,700 broilers per flock on average and were ventilated using a negative-pressure system. Prior to the onset of the monitoring, litter/manure in all houses was r

An initiative to increase opioid overdose education and naloxone distribution for homeless veterans residing in contracted housing facilities.

BACKGROUND: Up to 35% of veterans with opioid use disorder (OUD) are homeless, and veterans with OUD are nearly 29 times higher risk for homelessness; however, few are prescribed naloxone, an evidence-based intervention to reverse life-threatening opioid overdose. LOCAL PROBLEM: Many housing facilities for homeless veterans contracted with the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Health Care System are located in neighborhoods with high rates of opioid overdose. No systematic interventions have been implemented to provide opioid overdose education and naloxone kits to veterans and staff at these fa

The impact of a Housing First randomized controlled trial on substance use problems among homeless individuals with mental illness.

BACKGROUND: There is strong evidence that Housing First interventions are effective in improving housing stability and quality of life among homeless people with mental illness and addictions. However, there is very little evidence on the effectiveness of Housing First in improving substance use-related outcomes in this population. This study uses a randomized control design to examine the effects of scatter-site Housing First on substance use outcomes in a large urban centre. METHODS: Substance use outcomes were compared between a Housing First intervention and treatment as usual group in a

Bringing life course home: a pilot to reduce pregnancy risk through housing access and family support.

Proponents of life course comment that while the theory is persuasive, translating theory to practice is daunting. This paper speaks to the challenges and possibilities of intervention based on life course theory. It describes Healthy Start in Housing (HSiH), a partnership between the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) and the Boston Housing Authority (BHA) to reduce stress due to housing insecurity among low-income, pregnant women. HSiH seeks improved birth outcomes and long term health of mothers and infants. BHA goals are improved quality of life for participants, greater public housing

A randomized controlled trial of the effectiveness of Housing First in a small Canadian City.

BACKGROUND: The paper presents two-year findings from a study investigating the effectiveness of Housing First (HF) with assertive community treatment (ACT) in helping individuals with serious mental illness, who are homeless or precariously housed and living in a small city, to become stably housed. METHODS: The research design was a parallel group non-blinded RCT with participants randomly assigned after the baseline interview to receive HF with ACT (N = 100) or treatment as usual (TAU; N = 101). Participants were interviewed every 3 months over 21/24 months to investigate changes on a rang

Developing a peer-led intervention to promote COVID-19 testing in low-income housing settings.

BACKGROUND: The Housing Collaborative project at Eastern Virginia Medical School has developed a method of adapting public health guidance from public housing communities, which face tremendous health challenges in cardiometabolic health, cancer, and other major health conditions. In this paper, we describe how academic and community partners in the Housing Collaborative came together to do this work with a focus on COVID-19 testing in the context of the emerging pandemic. METHODS: The academic team used virtual community engagement methods to interact with the Housing Collaborative Community

A place to call home: study protocol for a longitudinal, mixed methods evaluation of two housing first adaptations in Sydney, Australia.

BACKGROUND: This protocol describes a study evaluating two 'Housing First' programs, Platform 70 and Common Ground, presently being implemented in the inner-city region of Sydney, Australia. The Housing First approach prioritises housing individuals who are homeless in standard lease agreement tenancies as rapidly as possible to lock in the benefits from long-term accommodation, even where the person may not be seen as 'housing ready'. METHODS/DESIGN: The longitudinal, mixed methods evaluation utilises both quantitative and qualitative data collected at baseline and 12-month follow-up time po

Housing and personality effects on judgement and attention biases in dairy cows.

Affective states can be inferred from responses to ambiguous and threatening stimuli, using Judgement Bias Tasks (JBTs) and Attention Bias Tasks (ABTs). We investigated the separate and interactive effects of personality and housing conditions on dairy cattle affective states. We assessed personality in 48 heifers using Open-Field, Novel-Object and Runway tests. Personality effects on responses to the JBT and to the ABT were examined when heifers were housed under reference conditions. Heifers were subsequently housed under positive or negative conditions, and housing effects on animal respons

The effectiveness of housing-based interventions and harm reduction among adults experiencing homelessness: a systematic review of recent controlled evidence (2019-2025).

Homelessness is a major public health and social issue, and research on the effectiveness of housing and harm reduction interventions provides fragmented findings that are difficult to compare across studies. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the effects of housing programmes (including Housing First) and alcohol harm reduction interventions among adults experiencing homelessness. Six databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Library) were searched, identifying 1385 records. After screening, 159 publications were assessed in full text, of which

Exploring the impact of housing insecurity on the health and wellbeing of children and young people in the United Kingdom: a qualitative systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Housing insecurity can be understood as experiencing or being at risk of multiple house moves that are not through choice and related to poverty. Many aspects of housing have all been shown to impact children/young people's health and wellbeing. However, the pathways linking housing and childhood health and wellbeing are complex and poorly understood. METHODS: We undertook a systematic review synthesising qualitative data on the perspectives of children/young people and those close to them, from the United Kingdom (UK). We searched databases, reference lists, and UK grey literatur

Home is where the HAART is: an examination of factors affecting neighbourhood perceptions among people with HIV/AIDS on antiretroviral therapy.

Understanding the neighbourhood perceptions of individuals living with HIV in urban and non-urban areas may help identify potential barriers to uptake and effectiveness of therapy. We evaluate how neighbourhood perceptions are influenced by socio-economic factors, such as food security and stable housing and other explanatory variables, among individuals receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in British Columbia. Neighbourhood perceptions, quality of life and socio-demographic information were collected in an interviewer-administered survey with study participants. Perception o

The role of housing instability in the association between ambient temperature and preterm birth.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is a leading cause of neonatal death and long-term health issues. Both environmental and social stressors, such as heat exposure and housing stability, may contribute to adverse birth outcomes, yet their joint effects are not well studied, especially in the Korean context. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the independent and joint associations of ambient temperature and housing instability with preterm birth. METHODS: This study analyzed eight years (2015–2022) of birth outcomes among women, derived from nationwide, register-based census data covering 100% of the po

Health impacts of direct displacement in a context of housing crisis and transnational gentrification: findings from Porto, Portugal.

Direct displacement of low-income, long-time residents has long been considered a key feature of gentrification. It has also been linked to adverse health impacts. Like elsewhere, Portugal is facing a "housing crisis". Housing costs have soared, and home renters face significant pressures. Exacerbating this, Portuguese cities like Porto and Lisbon are undergoing transnational gentrification processes, driven by their increasing international attractiveness to tourists and other transient users and the financialisation of housing. This extends the risk of direct displacement; however, its healt
