An unusual case of hydranencephaly presenting with an anterior midline cyst, a posterior calcified mass, cerebellar hypoplasia and occlusion of the posterior cerebral arteries.

We present an unusual case of severe hydranencephaly in a term infant who presented with the following additional unique features, which were discovered on CT, MRI and MR angiography examinations: (1) occlusion of the bilateral posterior cerebral arteries, (2) absence of the occipital lobes, (3) an ovoid calcified mass sitting on the inner table of the occipital bone, (4) severe cerebellar hypoplasia, (5) a dysmorphic cystic diencephalon, (6) a large anterior midline cyst just above the cribriform plate and (7) absence of the falx. These imaging findings were confirmed at autopsy.

Hydranencephaly and porencephaly predominated among neuropathologic findings in stillborn and neonatal piglets during the first major outbreak of Japanese encephalitis in Australia.

In 2022, piggeries in southeastern Australia experienced an increase in reproductive losses and occasional neurologic disease in neonates with up to 100% mortality in some litters. Molecular testing identified a genotype IV Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) as the etiological agent, detected for the first time in Australia. Necropsy of 235 JEV-positive domestic piglets, mostly stillbirths with 30% mummified, revealed hydranencephaly-porencephaly impacting the dorsal cerebrum as the most common lesion. Microscopically, this was characterized by varying degrees of parenchymal collapse as a resul

Porencephaly, hydranencephaly and leukoencephalopathy in ovine fetuses following transplacental infection with bovine virus diarrhoea virus: distribution of viral antigen and characterization of cellular response.

The distribution of viral antigen, histological lesions and inflammatory responses were examined in brains from ovine fetuses following experimental transplacental infection with a cytopathogenic strain of bovine virus diarrhoea virus (BVDV). At 10 and 14 days post inoculation (p.i.) viral antigen-containing cells were found throughout the different zones of the developing telencephalon and cerebellum. Corresponding to the distribution of viral antigen, necrotic lesions both of already differentiated and of undifferentiated fetal brain cells occurred. The extent and severity of microscopic les

Development of EEG activity after ten days of electrocerebral inactivity: ten days of electrocerebral inactivity: a case report in a premature neonate-hydranencephaly or massive ventricular enlargement.

This premature girl demonstrated electrocerebral inactivity in four records over a ten day period. After another eight days with no records, low voltage activity was present at a time when clinical responsiveness increased although the child never developed a prognostically favorable clinical state. The clinical responses never became well developed and the outlook never appeared favorable. If electrocerebral inactivity can be followed by active cortical function in a child who at best had islands of neurons on a deafferented cortex, then some recovery may potentially be possible in the premat

Fowler syndrome-a clinical, radiological, and pathological study of 14 cases.

We report on 14 fetuses from 10 families with the autosomal recessive syndrome of proliferative vasculopathy and hydranencephaly-hydrocephaly (Fowler syndrome). In four families sibs were affected and in six the parents were consanguineous. Antenatal ultrasonography showed hydrocephaly in all except two fetuses, but hydranencephaly was diagnosed in only one case. Postural abnormalities were seen in 10 fetuses and structural brain abnormalities were suspected in 3. At autopsy the cerebral cortex appeared as a translucent membranous structure (hydranencephaly) in most fetuses. However, in one ca

Agnathia malformation complex associated with a cystic distention of the oral cavity and hydranencepahly.

A fetus with a severe variant of the agnathia malformation complex (AMC) was delivered following prenatal diagnostic evaluation with ultrasonography. The constellation of anomalies that accompanied the agnathia included holoprosencephaly, hydranencephaly, situs inversus, and polysplenia. Recently, several authors have reported the association between the agnathia, holoprosencephaly, and situs inversus. We present evidence which suggests that, when hydranencephaly is also present, this may represent the most severe variant of the AMC. Our case is presented, the literature is reviewed, and a hyp

[Brain teratology as a result of transplacental virus infection in ruminants].

Various viruses relating to congenital brain teratology in ruminants are discussed. These include: bluetongue which may be responsible for porencephaly and hydranencephaly; Akabane disease, Rift Valley fever (mouse brain attenuated virus) and Wesselsbron disease (wild-type and mouse brain attenuated viruses) which can give rise to porencephaly, hydranencephaly, micrencephaly and cerebellar hypoplasia, and bovine viral diarrhoea-mucosal disease which results only in cerebellar hypoplasia. Certain foetal, maternal and virological factors that might have an effect on the pathogenesis of viral ter

Expanding the phenotype of COL4A1-related disorders-Four novel variants.

OBJECTIVE: COL4A1 variant causes severe central nervous system (CNS) anomalies, including hydranencephaly. However, the pathogenic mechanism underlying the COL4A1 phenotype remains unclear. Here, we report de novo COL4A1 variants in four Japanese patients with typical or rare CNS involvement and exhibiting diverse phenotypes. METHODS: We identified and enrolled four patients with white matter abnormalities and cerebral structural defects suggestive of cerebrovascular disease. Genetic analysis was performed using panel sequencing. RESULTS: All the patients were perinatally asymptomatic during

First trimester three-dimensional transvaginal imaging of alobar holoprosencephaly associated with proboscis and hypotelorism (ethmocephaly) in a 46,XX fetus.

A 19-year-old woman was scanned at 10(+6) weeks gestation by 2D-3D ultrasound. The fetus had a crown-rump length of 40.9 mm, with the cephalic pole occupied by a single cystic cavity measuring 10.6 x 7.7 x 6.8 mm and severe hypotelorism associated with mid-facial hypoplasia. 3D ultrasound confirmed the malformations seen on the 2D scan and enabled the visualization of a proboscis and a low-set right ear. Fetal karyotyping was performed by chorionic villus sampling. Due to major fetal malformations of the fetus, the patient opted for termination of pregnancy. First trimester sonographic diagnos

A truncating mutation in CEP55 is the likely cause of MARCH, a novel syndrome affecting neuronal mitosis.

BACKGROUND: Hydranencephaly is a congenital anomaly leading to replacement of the cerebral hemispheres with a fluid-filled cyst. The goals of this work are to describe a novel autosomal-recessive syndrome that includes hydranencephaly (multinucleated neurons, anhydramnios, renal dysplasia, cerebellar hypoplasia and hydranencephaly (MARCH)); to identify its genetic cause(s) and to provide functional insight into pathomechanism. METHODS: We used homozygosity mapping and exome sequencing to identify recessive mutations in a single family with three affected fetuses. Immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR

Cerebral, renal and splenic lesions due to fetal anoxia and their relationship to malformations.

Two newborn infants who suffered severe intra-uterine anoxia a few weeks before birth are described. Both died shortly after being born spontaneously and slightly prematurely. In one case the mother had attempted suicide by inhaling butane. The infant's kidneys were hypoplastic and resembled those seen in renal dysplasia, and the brain showed a severe encephalomalacia which would probably have developed into hydranencephaly. The other case was a twin who survived the intra-uterine death of her co-twin: she had hypoplastic kidneys similar to those in the first case, and a hypoplastic spleen. (T

Mutations of ARX are associated with striking pleiotropy and consistent genotype-phenotype correlation.

We recently identified mutations of ARX in nine genotypic males with X-linked lissencephaly with abnormal genitalia (XLAG), and in several female relatives with isolated agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). We now report 13 novel and two recurrent mutations of ARX, and one nucleotide change of uncertain significance in 20 genotypic males from 16 families. Most had XLAG, but two had hydranencephaly and abnormal genitalia, and three males from one family had Proud syndrome or ACC with abnormal genitalia. We obtained detailed clinical information on all 29 affected males, including the nine pre

Vascular basis for malformations in a twin.

A twin is described who was born with ileal atresia and hydranencephaly, the co-twin having died at about 24 weeks' gestation. If a macerated or autolysed twin is found at birth, the paediatrician should be alerted to the possibility of serious and not immediately obvious defects in the surviving infant.

Congenital abnormalities in newborn calves after inoculation of pregnant cows with Akabane virus.

A fresh isolate of Akabane virus was inoculated intravenously into 11 seronegative pregnant cows at 62 to 96 days of gestation. Two of the cows were slaughtered 18 days post-inoculation, and the fetuses were examined; the remaining cows were allowed to give birth. All the inoculated cows developed viremia and neutralizing antibody for the virus, indicating that the cows were actually infected with the virus, although fever or any other clinical abnormalities were not noted. The virus further infected the fetuses. This was proved by virus isolation in one of the two fetuses from the slaughtered

Congenital malformations in sheep resulting from in utero inoculation of Cache Valley virus.

Serologic evidence indicated that an episode of congenital abnormalities in sheep was caused by Cache Valley virus (CVV), a bunyavirus indigenous to the United States. To determine the teratogenic potential of CVV in sheep, fetuses were infected in utero between 27 and 54 days of gestation with an isolate (CK-102) obtained in 1987 from a sentinel sheep in San Angelo, Texas. The dams of these fetuses were euthanatized between 28 and 75 days after inoculation, and the fetuses were examined for malformations. Twenty-eight of 34 fetuses had congenital abnormalities, including arthrogryposis, hydra

Fluid abnormalities occur in the chronically cannulated mid-gestation but not late gestation ovine fetus.

Hydrops fetalis, with or without oligo- or polyhydramnios, is associated with very high fetal mortality. In many cases the causes are unknown. Chronically cannulated ovine fetuses have been used as animal models to study the regulation of fetal fluid balance. This study reports that the mid-gestation ovine fetus (70 +/- 1 d of gestation; term = 145-150 d) is susceptible to the development of fetal abnormalities (excess allantoic fluid--hydrallantois, with or without hydrops and hydranencephaly), when blood vessels in the neck are cannulated. Cannulation of one carotid artery and one jugular ve
