The Interplay between Luminescence Dissymmetry Factor and Quantum Yield: Symmetric and Asymmetric Hydrogen Bonding.

Unraveling the luminescence-structure relationship in metal-free chiral perovskites remains challenging, particularly for achieving both a strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Here, we attempt to decode this hidden linkage by constructing the isomorphic polymorph-based metal-free chiral perovskite through the rational design of the A-site cation. The distinct steric hindrance between meta- and ortho-ammonium sites in 2-methylpiperazine-1,4-diium provides two possibilities for forming the hydrogen bond, which could control the crystalli

Hydrogen Bonding Activates Ferric Porphyrin Hydroperoxo Species and Drives the Regioselective Heme Oxygenase Reaction.

Heme oxygenase (HO) is responsible for the controlled breakdown of heme in most living organisms, which avoids heme toxicity and provides essential biochemical components like biliverdin and the signaling molecule CO. The reactive oxidant in HO is proposed to be a ferric hydroperoxide species, which attacks a specific meso carbon center of the heme. Both site-directed mutagenesis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have suggested a dominant role of the hydrogen bonding present in the second sphere of the HO active site in the reactivity of HO. An iron porphyrin with a guanidine gr

Synergistic Hydrogen Bonding Topology Enables Ultra-Robust Recyclable Polyurethane Elastomers for Multifunctional Strain Sensors.

There has long been a trade-off between mechanical strength and toughness in polyurethane (PU) elastomers. This limitation arises from stress concentration and inefficient energy dissipation within the rigid domains. Therefore, a gradient hydrogen bonding topology strategy is proposed that constructs hierarchical crosslinked networks incorporating both strong (urea-based) and weak (ester-based) hydrogen bonds. By precisely controlling these bonds, an optimized polyurethane elastomer (SPU0.5, where 0.5 denotes the crosslinking density parameter) is achieved with a tensile strength of 27.4 MPa-2

Super Proton Conductivity Through Control of Hydrogen-Bonding Networks in Flexible Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received much attention as a solid-state electrolyte in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The introduction of proton carriers and functional groups into MOFs can improve the proton conductivity attributed to the formation of hydrogen-bonding networks, while the underlying synergistic mechanism is still unclear. Here, a series of flexible MOFs (MIL-88B, [Fe3 O(OH)(H2 O)2 (O2 C-C6 H4 -CO2 )3 ] with imidazole) is designed to modify the hydrogen-bonding networks and investigate the resulting proton-conducting characteristics by controlling the breathing beha

Importance of Co-operative Hydrogen Bonding in the Apramycin-Ribosomal Decoding A-Site Interaction.

An intramolecular hydrogen bond between the protonated equatorial 7'-methylamino group of apramycin and the vicinal axial 6'-hydroxy group acidifies the 6'-hydroxy group leading to a strong hydrogen bond to A1408 in the ribosomal drug binding pocket in the decoding A site of the small ribosomal subunit. In 6'-epiapramycin, the trans-nature of the 6'-hydroxy group and the 7'-methylamino group results in a much weaker intramolecular hydrogen bond, and a consequently weaker cooperative hydrogen bonding network with A1408, resulting overall in reduced inhibition of protein synthesis and antibacter

Disrupting Effects of Osteogenesis Imperfecta Mutations Could Be Predicted by Local Hydrogen Bonding Energy.

Osteogenesis imperfecta(OI) is a disease caused by substitution in glycine residues with different amino acids in type I collagen (Gly-Xaa-Yaa)n. Collagen model peptides can capture the thermal stability loss of the helix after Gly mutations, most of which are homotrimers. However, a majority of natural collagen exists in heterotrimers. To investigate the effects of chain specific mutations in the natural state of collagen more accurately, here we introduce various lengths of side-chain amino acids into ABC-type heterotrimers. The disruptive effects of the mutations were characterized both exp

A major role for side-chain polyglutamine hydrogen bonding in irreversible ataxin-3 aggregation.

The protein ataxin-3 consists of an N-terminal globular Josephin domain (JD) and an unstructured C-terminal region containing a stretch of consecutive glutamines that triggers the neurodegenerative disorder spinocerebellar ataxia type 3, when it is expanded beyond a critical threshold. The disease results from misfolding and aggregation, although the pathway and structure of the aggregation intermediates are not fully understood. In order to provide insight into the mechanism of the process, we monitored the aggregation of a normal (AT3Q24) ataxin-3, an expanded (AT3Q55) ataxin-3, and the JD i

The hydrogen-bonding transition and isotope-dependent negative thermal expansion in H3Co(CN)6.

We investigate the structures of H(3)Co(CN)(6) and D(3)Co(CN)(6) and their temperature dependence using a combination of advanced neutron and x-ray diffraction techniques. Lattice parameter refinements show marked temperature- and isotope-dependent effects in the thermal expansion behaviour. Reverse Monte Carlo modelling of neutron total scattering data characterizes the distribution of D atom positions in the deuterated compound; analysis of these distributions reveals that the two N-H/D bonds become increasingly different with increasing temperature, suggesting a mechanism for the observed t

Hydrogen-bonding molecular ruler surfactants as probes of specific solvation at liquid/liquid interfaces.

Resonance-enhanced, second harmonic generation (SHG) is used to measure the electronic structure of solutes sensitive to specific solvation adsorbed to liquid/liquid and liquid/solid interfaces. Here, specific solvation refers to solvent-solute interactions that are directional and localized. N-methyl-p-methoxyaniline (NMMA) is a solute whose first allowed electronic transition wavelength remains almost constant (approximately 315 nm) in non-hydrogen-bonding solvents regardless of solvent polarity. However, in hydrogen-bond-accepting solvents such as dimethylsulfoxide, NMMA's absorbance shifts

Ultrasonic and IR study of intermolecular association through hydrogen bonding in ternary liquid mixtures.

Complex formation in ternary liquid mixtures of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) with phenol and o-cresol in carbontetrachloride has been studied by measuring ultrasonic velocity at 2 MHz, in the concentration range of 0.019-0.162 (in mole fraction of DMSO) at varying temperatures of 20, 30 and 40 degrees C. Using measured values of ultrasonic velocity, other parameters such as adiabatic compressibility, intermolecular free length, molar sound velocity, molar compressibility, specific acoustic impedance and molar volume have been evaluated. These parameters have been utilized to study the solute-solut

Experimental evidence for blue-shifted hydrogen bonding in the fluoroform-hydrogen chloride complex: a matrix-isolation infrared and ab initio study.

The 1:1 hydrogen-bonded complex of fluoroform and hydrogen chloride was studied using matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy and ab initio computations. Using B3LYP and MP2 levels of theory with 6-311++G(d,p) and aug-cc-pVDZ basis sets, the structures of the complexes and their energies were computed. For the 1:1 CHF3-HCl complexes, ab initio computations showed two minima, one cyclic and the other acyclic. The cyclic complex was found to have C-H · · · Cl and C-F · · · H interactions, where CHF3 and HCl sub-molecules act as proton donor and proton acceptor, respectively. The second minimum co

C-C bond coupling with sp3 C-H bond via active intermediates from CO2 hydrogenation.

Compared to the sluggish kinetics observed in methanol-mediated side-chain alkylation of methyl groups with sp3 C-H bonds, CO2 hydrogenation emerges as a sustainable alternative strategy, yet it remains a challenge. Here, as far as we know, it is first reported that using CO2 hydrogenation replacing methanol can conduct the side-chain alkylation of 4-methylpyridine (MEPY) over a binary metal oxide-zeolite Zn40Zr60O/CsX tandem catalyst (ZZO/CsX). This ZZO/CsX catalyst can achieve 19.6% MEPY single-pass conversion and 82% 4-ethylpyridine (ETPY) selectivity by using CO2 hydrogenation, which is 6.

Porous Organic Frameworks Constructed by the Synergetic Effect of Covalent Bonds and Hydrogen Bonds for the Selective Identification and Detection of Explosives.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have emerged as novel platforms for material design and functional explorations. Here, we report an unconventional structural organic framework (named CHOF-1) combined with 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) and 5-hydroxyisophthalaldehyde (HP) through the synergetic effect of covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds. CHOF-1 contains two different pores and is an eclipsed AA-stacking model with high thermal stability. It exhibits selective "turn-off" and red shift fluorescence responses toward 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) an

Weak Intermolecular CH···N Hydrogen Bonding: Determination of 13CH-15N Hydrogen-Bond Mediated J Couplings by Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy and First-Principles Calculations.

Weak hydrogen bonds are increasingly hypothesized to play key roles in a wide range of chemistry from catalysis to gelation to polymer structure. Here, 15N/13C spin-echo magic-angle spinning (MAS) solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments are applied to "view" intermolecular CH···N hydrogen bonding in two selectively labeled organic compounds, 4-[15N] cyano-4'-[13C2] ethynylbiphenyl (1) and [15N3,13C6]-2,4,6-triethynyl-1,3,5-triazine (2). The synthesis of 2-15N3,13C6 is reported here for the first time via a multistep procedure, where the key element is the reaction of [15N3]-2,

Cα-H carries information of a hydrogen bond involving the geminal hydroxyl group: a case study with a hydrogen-bonded complex of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol and tertiary amines.

Experimental measurement of the contribution of H-bonding to intermolecular and intramolecular interactions that provide specificity to biological complex formation is an important aspect of macromolecular chemistry and structural biology. However, there are very few viable methods available to determine the energetic contribution of an individual hydrogen bond to binding and catalysis in biological systems. Therefore, the methods that use secondary deuterium isotope effects analyzed by NMR or equilibrium or kinetic isotope effect measurements are attractive ways to gain information on the H-b

Unconventional CH(δ+)···N hydrogen bonding interactions in the stepwise solvation of the naphthalene radical cation by hydrogen cyanide and acetonitrile molecules.

Equilibrium thermochemical measurements using the mass-selected ion mobility (MSIM) technique have been utilized to investigate the binding energies and entropy changes of the stepwise association of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and acetonitrile (CH3CN) molecules with the naphthalene radical cation (C10H8˙(+)) in the gas phase forming the C10H8˙(+)(HCN)n and C10H8˙(+)(CH3CN)n clusters with n = 1-3 and 1-5, respectively. A Dual Hydrogen-Bonding Molecular Bridge Strategy Enables Efficient and Stable Inverted Organic Solar Cells.

Simultaneously achieving high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and robust operational stability in inverted organic solar cells (OSCs) requires precise interfacial engineering to overcome the energy-level misalignment and intrinsic photocatalytic activity of ZnO electron transport layers. Herein, we report a multifunctional molecular bridge strategy utilizing a rationally designed naphthalene diimide derivative, NDI-Me, featuring synergistic methyl and hydroxyl functionalization. Distinct from its analogues (NDI-Ph and NDI-OH), NDI-Me establishes a unique dual hydrogen-bonding network: phenol

The effect of different liquids on paper strength demonstrates the central role of hydrogen bonding.

Paper derives its mechanical integrity from a complex network of interactions between cellulose fibres, yet the relative importance of hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions and electrostatic forces remains debated. Here, the wet tensile strength of paper sheets are investigated when exposed to water, a series of organic solvents with differing hydrogen-bonding characteristics, and aqueous salt and urea solutions designed to modify electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. By systematically varying the liquid environment surrounding the fibre network, we directly probe the mechanisms gov

Tuning glass-forming dynamics by modifying hydrogen bonding: From polyalcohols to van der Waals liquids.

This work investigates how modifications of molecular structure influence the dynamics of hydrogen-bonded glass-formers, with particular focus on glycerol and sorbitol. By systematically eliminating hydrogen bonding through acetylation-yielding glycerol triacetate and sorbitol hexaacetate-and by comparing with previous studies involving pressure, nanoconfinement, and hyperquenching, we assess the role of hydrogen bonds in governing structural and secondary relaxation processes. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy reveals that the removal of hydroxyl groups leads to a substantial reduction in die
