BACKGROUND: In soils with a low phosphorus (P) supply, sugar beet is known to intake more P than other species such as maize, wheat, or groundnut. We hypothesized that organic compounds exuded by sugar beet roots solubilize soil P and that this exudation is stimulated by P starvation.
RESULTS: Root exudates were collected from plants grown in hydroponics under low- and high-P availability. Exudate components were separated by HPLC, ionized by electrospray, and detected by mass spectrometry in the range of mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) from 100 to 1000. Eight mass spectrometric signals were enhan

Chromium (Cr), a highly toxic redox-active metal cation in soil, seriously threatens global agriculture by affecting nutrient uptake and disturbing various physio-biochemical processes in plants, thereby reducing yields. Here, we examined the effects of different concentrations of Cr alone and in combination with hydrogen sulfide (H2S) application on the growth and physio-biochemical performance of two mungbeans (Vigna radiata L.) varieties, viz. Pusa Vishal (PV; Cr tolerant) and Pusa Ratna (PR; Cr sensitive), growing in a pot in hydroponics. Plants were grown in the pot experiment to examine

Plant roots are able to exude vast amounts of metabolites into the rhizosphere in response to phosphorus (P) deficiency. Causing noteworthy costs in terms of energy and carbon (C) for the plants. Therefore, it is suggested that exudates reacquisition by roots could represent an energy saving strategy of plants. This study aimed at investigating the effect of P deficiency on the ability of hydroponically grown tomato plants to re-acquire specific compounds generally present in root exudates by using 13C-labelled molecules. Results showed that P deficient tomato plants were able to take up citra

A study was conducted to investigate the contribution of β-cyanoalanine synthase (CAS) to the botanical metabolism of free cyanide and iron cyanides. Seedlings of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. XZX 45) were grown hydroponically and then amended with free cyanide (KCN) or ferri-cyanide [K(3)Fe(CN)(6)] into the growth media. Total cyanide, free cyanide, and Fe(3+)/Fe(2+) in aqueous solution were analyzed to identify the speciation of K(3)Fe(CN)(6). Activity of CAS in different parts of the rice seedlings was also assayed in vivo and results indicated that dissociation of K(3)Fe(CN)(6) to free cyanide

Rice cultivation is a major source of methane (CH4), with most emissions occurring via plant-mediated diffusion through roots and shoots, and root aerenchyma is widely assumed to facilitate CH4 diffusion from soil to atmosphere. However, the root traits governing radial gas exchange remain poorly resolved, limiting our understanding of plant-mediated emissions. We tested the hypothesis that the barrier to radial O2 loss (ROL) also restricts plant-mediated CH4 emissions using a synthetic experimental approach to isolate plant trait controls from confounding soil microbial processes. Sixteen ric

By using hydroponics, this paper studied the physiological responses of trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata) seedlings to the deficiency of zinc (0 micromol x L(-1) Zn2+) and/or iron (0 micromol x L(-1) Fe-EDTA). The deficiency of both Zn and Fe decreased the plant biomass and root viability, and increased the leaf-and root SOD activity significantly. Zinc deficiency increased the leaf-and root POD significantly, while Fe deficiency had an adverse effect. The root CAT activity increased significantly under Zn deficiency, but had less difference with the control under Fe deficiency. Fe- and

Iron plaque (IP) on root surface can enhance the tolerance of plants to environmental stresses. However, it remains unclear the impact of Fe2+ on cadmium (Cd) toxicity to rice (Oryza sativa) seedlings. In this study, the effects of different Fe2+ and Cd2+ concentration combinations on rice growth were examined hydroponically. Results indicated that Fe2+ concentration up to 3.2 mM did not damage rice roots while induced IP formation obviously. Cd2+ of 10 μM repressed rice growth significantly, while the addition of 0.2 mM Fe2+ to 10 μM Cd2+ solution (Cd+Fe) did not damage rice roots, indicating

The present study evaluated the impact of phosphorus application rate on plant growth and physiological parameters, antioxidant activity, chemical composition, and essential oil yield and composition of hydroponically grown spearmint plants. Increased P levels resulted in high dry matter content of the aerial part. Antioxidant activity of spearmint leaves was significantly higher at the highest P levels. Although essential oil yield was not affected, essential oil composition varied among the studied P levels, especially carvone content. Total and individual organic acids content was higher wh

Phytoremediation is a green technology for the remediation of contaminated ecosystems by using plants. In the present study, a hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate the phytoremediation potential of eight canola (Brassica napus L.) cultivars for hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)]. Chromium significantly affected dry weight, lipid peroxidation, chlorophylls, non-protein thiol and antioxidant enzymes. Based on the dry weight, the tolerance index was found maximum in cultivar (cv.) NK Petrol and minimum in cv. Sary. The cv. Sary accumulated the maximum amount of Cr (705.8 μg g(-1) DW), whi

The results of this study indicate that the presence of plants did enhance TNT and TNB removal from IAAP groundwater. Most effective at 25 degrees C were reed canary grass, coontail and pondweed. Groundwater and plant tissue analyses indicate that in presence of the plants tested TNT is degraded to reduced by-products and to other metabolites that were not analyzed. TNT removal was best modeled using first order kinetics, with rate constants at 25 degrees C incubations ranging from 0.038 microgram L-1 h-1 for reed canary grass to 0.012 microgram L-1 h-1 for parrot-feather. These kinetics predi

Licorice, Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn., is one of herbal medicines widely used for various purposes, including as a sweetener and for gastric ulcer treatment. However, environmental destruction due to the harvesting of wild licorice is becoming a serious problem. We cultured licorice in a hydroponic system to examine the relation between the concentration of nutritional solution applied and glycyrrhizin content to determine the optimal nutrient solution concentration for commercial licorice production. Licorice growth and glycyrrhizin content in the root reached the highest values when the plants

Contamination of heavy metals in agricultural soils, particularly with lead (Pb), poses a severe hazard to ecosystems, crop production, and food safety. Although citric acid has been proposed as a potential detoxifying agent, its dose-dependent effects on Pb-stressed tomato plants under controlled conditions are not well understood. A hydroponic experiment was conducted at Khulna Agricultural University, Bangladesh, from January to March 2023 to assess the impact of CA application on tomato seedlings under Pb stress. However, Pb stress significantly impaired plant growth, water content, photos

Cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) is a key enzyme in the mammalian metabolism of several low molecular weight volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as trichloroethylene (TCE), vinyl chloride (VC), carbon tetrachloride (CT), benzene, chloroform, and bromodichloromethane (BDCM), which are all common environmental pollutants that pose risks to human health. We have developed a transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xanthii) that expresses CYP2E1 with increased activity toward TCE and ethylene dibromide. In experiments with tobacco plant cuttings exposed to VOCs in small hydroponic vessels, the tr

Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.) is a South American native plant whose leaves are used to produce mate, a traditional hot water infusion. The species is rich in secondary metabolites of economic interest and grows naturally in acidic, low-fertility soils where aluminum (Al) is highly bioavailable. However, the influence of Al on secondary metabolism and infusion composition is poorly understood. We cultivated I. paraguariensis in a hydroponic system with increasing Al concentrations. Plant morphology and photosynthesis parameters were not affected, while reactive oxygen species le

Manganese (Mn)-rich seedling cultivation may reduce cadmium (Cd) uptake in rice; however, its stage-dependent effects and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Mn-rich seedlings were cultivated in a hydroponic system. Biomass, Cd and Mn accumulation, and transcriptomic profiles were subsequently assessed at different growth stages. The results demonstrated that Mn enrichment increased Mn accumulation in the seedlings by 18.9-76.0-fold. On day 26 after transplantation, Cd concentrations in roots and shoots were reduced by 79.9% and 89.2%, respectively, in Mn-rich seedlings. However, this effect
