According to the World Health Organization, diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in 2016. Long-term diabetes complications are associated with hyperglycemia. It is difficult to predict the beginning and evolution of those complications. The goal of the study was to evaluate the relationship between glycemia and blood spectroscopic variables in an experimental model of type 1 diabetes (streptozotocin model). Blood samples were taken weekly (10 weeks) from the tail of male Wistar rats with or without diabetes. Blood optical absorption spectra were obtained by means of photoacoustic sp

BACKGROUND: Treating women with gestational diabetes mellitus in the third trimester improves perinatal outcomes. It is unknown whether treating women with mild glucose intolerance earlier in pregnancy would be beneficial in the reduction of maternal and neonatal morbidities.
OBJECTIVE: In women with hyperglycemia (hemoglobin A1c ≥5.7% and/or fasting glucose ≥92 mg/dL) in early pregnancy, we sought to determine whether immediate treatment improved maternal and neonatal outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: This unblinded randomized controlled trial enrolled women with hyperglycemia at ≤15+0 weeks gestatio

Olanzapine is a second-generation antipsychotic (SGA) used frequently in the treatment of schizophrenia and a growing list of off-label conditions. Though effective in reducing psychoses, acute olanzapine treatment causes rapid increases in blood glucose that are believed to be mediated by increases in liver glucose output, skeletal muscle insulin resistance, and beta cell dysfunction. Further, the acute lipidemic response to olanzapine has been largely unexplored. While females have been reported to be more susceptible to olanzapine-induced weight gain, there is little known about the impact

BACKGROUND Predictive values of admission blood glucose for early hematoma expansion in patients with intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) remain controversial. Blend sign is a novel image predictor for early hematoma growth that suggests presence of active bleeding. We investigated the association between hyperglycemia and blend sign in predicting early hematoma growth in ICH patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS All patients with intracranial hemorrhage were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical characteristics and radiological parameters were collected. Blood glucose was measured within 24 h after onset. CT

The development of a diabetic cardiomyopathy is a multifactorial process, and evidence is accumulating that defects in intracellular free calcium concentration [Ca2+]i or its homeostasis are related to impaired mechanical performance of the diabetic heart leading to a reduction in contractile dysfunction. Defects in ryanodine receptor, reduced activity of the sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium pump (SERCA) and, along with reduced activity of the sodium-calcium exchanger (NCX) and alterations in myofilament, collectively cause a calcium imbalance within the diabetic cardiomyocytes. This in turn is

Decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE) is a brominated flame retardant used in plastic and textile articles. It has become a ubiquitous environmental contaminant, however; the relationship between decaBDE and obesity remains to be elucidated. We aimed to clarify if oral decaBDE exposure can be a factor in obesity and its related metabolic dysfuctions. Male C57BL/6 J mice were fed a normal (ND, 9.0 kcal% fat) or high-fat (HFD, 62.2 kcal% fat) diet and treated with decaBDE (the equivalent of three doses of 0, 0.5 (L-DecaBDE), and 10 (H-DecaBDE) μg/kg body weight/day) ad libitum in drinking water from

Diabetes is a complex disease that is characterized with hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. These pathologies are associated with significant cardiovascular implications that affect both the macro- and microvasculature. It is therefore important to understand the effects of various pathologies associated with diabetes on the vasculature. Here we directly test the effects of hyperglycemia on vascular smooth muscle (VSM) Ca2+ signaling in an isolated in vitro system using the A7r5 rat aortic cell line as a model. We find that prolonged exposure of A7r5 cells to hyperglycemia (w

: Molecularly targeted cancer therapy has rapidly changed the landscape of oncologic care, often improving patients' prognosis without causing as substantial a quality-of-life decrement as cytotoxic chemotherapy does. Nevertheless, targeted agents can cause side effects that may be less familiar to medical oncologists and that require the attention and expertise of subspecialists. In this review, we focus on hyperglycemia, which can occur with use of new anticancer agents that interact with cell proliferation pathways. Key mediators of these pathways include the tyrosine kinase receptors insul

This study investigates the effectiveness and mechanisms of a serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 1 (SGK1) inhibitor in counteracting hyperglycemia. In an in vivo experiment, we demonstrated that after an 8-week treatment with an SGK1 inhibitor, the fasting blood glucose and HbA1c level significantly decreased in db/db mice. RT-PCR and western blot analyses revealed that intestinal SGK1 and sodium glucose co-transporter 1 (SGLT1) expression were enhanced in db/db mice. Treatment with an SGK1 inhibitor decreased excessive SGLT1 expression in the intestine of db/db mice. In vitro experime

Hyperglycemia is common after acute stroke and is associated with a worse outcome of stroke. Thus, a better understanding of stress hyperglycemia is helpful to the prevention and therapeutic treatment of stroke. Chromium is an essential nutrient required for optimal insulin activity and normal carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Beyond its nutritional effects, dietary supplement of chromium causes beneficial outcomes against several diseases, in particular diabetes-associated complications. In this study, we investigated whether post-stroke hyperglycemia involved chromium dynamic mobilization i

UNLABELLED: We found that administration of a recombinant adenovirus (rAd) expressing betacellulin (BTC) into obese diabetic db/db mice ameliorated hyperglycemia. Exogenous glucose clearance was significantly improved, and serum insulin levels were significantly higher in rAd-BTC-treated mice than rAd-β-gal-treated control mice. rAd-BTC treatment increased insulin/bromodeoxyuridine double-positive cells in the islets, and islets from rAd-BTC-treated mice exhibited a significant increase in the level of G1-S phase-related cyclins as compared with control mice. In addition, BTC treatment increas

Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is associated with increased diabetic cardiovascular diseases. However, the role of HHcy in atherogenesis associated with hyperglycemia (HG) remains unknown. To examine the role and mechanisms by which HHcy accelerates HG-induced atherosclerosis, we established an atherosclerosis-susceptible HHcy and HG mouse model. HHcy was established in mice deficient in cystathionine β-synthase (Cbs) in which the homocysteine (Hcy) level could be lowered by inducing transgenic human CBS (Tg-hCBS) using Zn supplementation. HG was induced by streptozotocin injection. Atheroscleros

Both chronic opiate dependence and diabetes are widespread public health problems. The historically causal relationship between opiate pharmacology and hyperglycemia would appear to have fallen from current medical knowledge. The aims of this study were to assess the severity of hyperglycemia in our opiate substance use disorder (SUD) patient population and review its pathophysiological basis. A review was undertaken of our clinical pathology database, comparing SUD patients and general medical controls (NSUD). A total of 1,602 SUD patients were compared with 2,858 NSUD patients 15-50 years of

A 2-year-old boy was admitted with diagnosis of diabetes debut, with blood glucose of 500 mg% on admission, without ketosis or metabolic acidosis. He also presented bilious vomiting and brownish bloody stools. He was operated with a presumptive diagnosis of acute intestinal obstruction. The final diagnosis was volvulus, secondary to congenital malrotation. After surgery, he normalized blood sugar levels. The clinical setting was assumed as hyperglycemia without ketosis, with characteristic of severity caused by stress, secondary to volvulus in malrotation. This association has not yet been des

BACKGROUND: One of the most serious complications after major orthopedic surgery is deep wound or periprosthetic joint infection. Various risk factors for infection after hip and knee replacement surgery have been reported, including patients' comorbidities and surgical technique factors. We investigated whether hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus (DM) are associated with infection that requires surgical intervention after total hip and knee arthroplasty.
METHODS: We reviewed our computerized database for elective primary total hip and knee arthroplasty from 2000 to 2008. Demographic informat

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Acute hyperglycemia is known to worsen ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury following myocardial infarction and stroke. We investigated whether acute hyperglycemia worsens injury and amplifies the inflammatory response evoked by hepatic I/R.
METHODS: Rats were pretreated with an intraperitoneal injection of 25% glucose or 0.9% sodium chloride (10 ml/kg BW). Subsequently, rats underwent partial (70%) hepatic ischemia for 45 min. After 4 h of reperfusion, hepatic injury, oxidative stress, inflammation, and heat shock protein expression were assessed.
RESULTS: Liver injury was inc

Celiac disease (CD) is a T-cell-mediated enteropathy, triggered in genetically susceptible individuals by the ingestion of wheat gluten or related rye and barley proteins, whose clinical picture disease is considerably heterologous. Patients with CD are at high risk of autoimmune disorders; similarly, CD is frequent in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), a disorder characterized by the immune-mediated beta-cell destruction, with the cooperation of environmental factors in genetically susceptible individuals. The immunological markers of beta-cell destruction are the autoantibodies t
