Growth of Aspergillus was observed in the necrotic tissue of non-cavitary lung cancer. Case 1 was a 60-year-old male complaining of cough and fever and was found to have left lower lobe atelectasis on chest X-ray. Bronchoscopic examination showed the yellow soft lesion occluding the left upper and lower lobe bronchus. Specimen from the lesion demonstrated adenocarcinoma and hyphae of Aspergillus in the necrotic tumor. Case 2 was a 53-year-old male who was found to have a left upper lobe mass by chest X-ray screening. Bronchoscopic examination showed the yellow polypoid lesion occluding the lef

Hyphal growth in filamentous fungi proceeds in an unidirectional radial pattern from a point inoculation. An inhibitor produced, secreted, and absorbed by the advancing hyphae has been speculated to account for directional growth. Working with Mucor and Aspergillus, laboratory evidence is provided for the production of an inhibitory by the advancing hyphae of these filmentous fungi that precludes back growth. Strains of Mucor and Aspergillus inoculated in agar on a 0.45-mm membrane filter placed on agar surfaces grow radially beyond the filter perimeter and onto the agar surface. Removal of th

Candida albicans is one of the most common causes of superficial and invasive fungal disease in humans. Its ability to cause disease has been closely linked to its ability to undergo a morphological transition from budding yeast to filamentous forms (hyphae and pseudohyphae). The ability of C. albicans strains isolated from patients to undergo filamentation varies significantly. In addition, the filamentation phenotypes of mutants involving transcription factors that positively regulate hyphal morphogenesis can also vary from strain to strain. Here, we characterized the virulence, in vitro and

We present a case of maxillary sinusitis caused by Schizophyllum commune, in a 50-year-old female. The patient presented with nasal obstruction, purulent nasal discharge from right side of the nose, cough, headache, and sneezing. Computed tomography revealed extensive opacity of the right maxillary sinus as well as erosion of the nasal wall and maxillary bone. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery was done, and fungal debris present on right side of the maxillary sinus was removed and sent to laboratory. Potassium hydroxide (KOH) examination of the nasal discharge showed hyaline, septate hyphae.

The fungal disease zygomycosis was diagnosed in the thoracic cavity of two 7-weeks-old ducks. In the first case, the diagnosis was based on examination of granulomas that were found to contain fungal hyphae characteristics of zygomycetes. The second case was diagnosed using similar criteria along with the subsequent culture of Mucor sp. from the lesion. To attain a definitive diagnosis of zygomycosis, the fungal hyphae found during histologic examination must be differentiated from Aspergillus sp. and Dactylaria gallopava.

PURPOSE: To characterize the clinical and mycological features of favus of scrotum due to Trichophyton rubrum.
METHODS: A single-site prospective study was carried out in an outpatient dermatology clinic. Microscopic examination and fungal culture were done using skin scrapings. Scales on the scrotum were stained with PAS and visualized by microscopy, including in vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM). Two strains were analyzed by RAPD typing. Scutular lesions were fixed for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
RESULTS: Cultures of the scale fro

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Infection of vaginal epithelial cells by Candida albicans (C. albicans) can cause vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). Pulsatilla decoction has been reported and used to treat VVC, but the specific mechanism of its protective effect on cells is still unclear.
AIM OF THE STUDY: In this study, transcriptomic profiling and molecular docking were used to predict the protective effects and regulatory mechanisms of the n-butanol extract of Pulsatilla Decoction (BEPD) in vaginal epithelial cells stimulated with C. albicans hyphae, and these findings were further validated

Trichophyton is a dermatophytic fungi causing superficial skin infections which affects outermost layer of the epidermis, stratum corneum, and mainly involves feet, groin, scalp, and nails. Invasion into the dermis occurs mainly in immunocompromised patients. A 75-year-old hypertensive female presented with a nodular swelling on the dorsum of right foot for 1 month. The swelling was 1.0 × 1.0 cm and gradually progressive in nature. FNAC revealed many thin filamentous branching and fungal hyphae along with foreign body granulomas and suppurative acute inflammation. The swelling was excised and

Poor recovery of Zygomycetes hyphae from tissue specimens may result from failure of current culture methods to mimic physiologic conditions found in hyphae-laden infected tissue. We describe the use of an in vitro model simulating Zygomycetes growth under necrotic or hypoxic tissue conditions. We preconditioned hyphae of clinical Zygomycetes isolates in flasks under anaerobic conditions using Ana-Packs (Becton Dickinson Microbiology Systems, Sparks, MD) at 37 degrees C for 48 hours, thus simulating in vivo growth in an infracted hypoxic lesion, and compared the recovery of paired inocula at 3

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fungal disease that commonly presents as cutaneous or rhinocerebral infections associated with immunocompromised states. It may exceptionally present as isolated involvement of the brain with a varied clinical presentation, which may be difficult to diagnose early, leading to increased mortality. Herein, we report the case of a 42-year-old immunocompetent female with left-sided limb weakness and a history of recurrent vomiting and headache for the last two years. Clinically, glioma was suspected, but histopathological examination revealed a few broad aseptate f

The clinical significance of polymicrobial interactions, particularly those between commensal species with high pathogenic potential, remains largely understudied. Although the dimorphic fungal species Candida albicans and the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus are common cocolonizers of humans, they are considered leading opportunistic pathogens. Oral candidiasis specifically, characterized by hyphal invasion of oral mucosal tissue, is the most common opportunistic infection in HIV(+) and immunocompromised individuals. In this study, building on our previous findings, a mouse model was developed

Candida albicans causes superficial and life-threatening systemic infections. These are difficult to treat often due to drug resistance, particularly because C. albicans biofilms are inherently resistant to most antifungals. Sophorolipid (SL), a glycolipid biosurfactant, has been shown to have antimicrobial and anticancer properties. In this study, we investigated the effect of SL on C. albicans biofilm formation and preformed biofilms. SL was found to inhibit C. albicans biofilm formation as well as reduce the viability of preformed biofilms. Moreover, SL, when used along with amphotericin B

Conidiobolomycosis is a subcutaneous mycosis of the facial midline affecting primarily adult males. It is caused by the saprophytic fungus, Conodiobolus coronatus, present in soils and dried vegetables, characteristic of intertropical regions. C. coronatus belongs to the class Zygomycetes, order Entomophthorales; it is a fungus composed of thick, short hyphae that grows at temperatures between 30 degrees C and 37 degrees C and causes nasal granulomas. The histologic findings are described of a case of conidiobolomycosis in a 31-year-old male, born and resident in the Urabá region of Colombia.

A 75-year-old female with chronic renal failure diagnosed as Wegener's granulomatosis was receiving steroids and immunosuppressive agents when subarachnoid hemorrhage developed. Cerebral angiography showed a fusiform aneurysm arising from an angular branch of the left middle cerebral artery. Hemorrhage occurred and the aneurysm was excised by emergency surgery. Microscopic examination of the aneurysm revealed dense infiltration of hyphae identified as Aspergillus. She died of subsequent hemorrhage. Autopsy showed numerous Aspergillus hyphae in the lung. Fungal mycotic aneurysm should be consid

A 74-year-old healthy man with locally invasive form of pulmonary aspergillosis (PA) is reported. Chest X-ray film showed a segmental infiltration of right upper lobe (RUL) without cavitation, and the transbronchial lung biopsy specimen contained numerous hyphae of aspergillus species. Complication of bronchial asthma, or bronchiectasis were absent, and hyphae of aspergillus were present at only one segment of RUL. After 5 months of therapy with oral fluconazole, the PA had dramatically improved. Fluconazole was found to be effective for the locally invasive form of PA in a healthy man.

The patient was a 73-year-old healthy female farmer who had been treated with terbinafine for 25.5 months by a primary physician. She exhibited a discoloration and thickening of the right big toenail. She had no concomitant paronychia. Direct microscopy revealed chlamydoconidia and hyphae, and periodic acid-Schiff stained nail specimen showed septate hyphae. On the basis of these morphological features and gene analysis, the final diagnosis was ungual hyalohyphomycosis caused by Fusarium proliferatum. Topical application of 10% efinaconazole solution cured the disease in 10 months.

To confirm or to refute the diagnosis of candida oesophagitis as the most common infectious disease of the oesophagus is a standard diagnostic procedure in histopathology. The fungal hyphae colonise mainly the superficial layers of the oesophageal squamous mucosa. Tangentially cut sections of oesophageal biopsies in the paraffin block might lead to a false negative result concerning mycotic infection. The aim of this study was to investigate whether cytospin analysis of the formalin fixative in which the biopsies were stored and transported would be a tool to close the diagnostic gap.Oesophage

Aspergillus fumigatus is the most important mould pathogen in immunosuppressed patients. Suboptimal clearance of inhaled spores results in the colonisation of the lung airways by invasive hyphae. The first point of contact between A. fumigatus and the host is the lung epithelium. In vitro and ex vivo studies have characterised critical aspects of the interaction of invasive hyphae on the surface of epithelial cells. However, the cellular interplay between internalised A. fumigatus and the lung epithelium remains largely unexplored. Here, we use high-resolution live-cell confocal microscopy, 3D

A 3-year-old female common marmoset was euthanatized because of wasting. Grossly, a perforating lesion was present in the jejunum and hemorrhagic lesions in the cecum and colon. Histopathologically, these gross lesions were a perforated jejunal ulcer and necrotizing colitis, respectively. Necrotizing colitis was characterized by extensive mucosal necrosis along with numerous ribbon-shaped aseptate hyphae. These aseptate hyaline hyphae were positively stained with PAS and GMS, and reacted immunohistochemically with the antibody against the family Mucoraceae. This case was diagnosed as intestina
