Clinical Hypnosis for Chronic Non-Cancer Pain: A Scoping Review.

Chronic non-cancer pain requires multimodal management, and clinical hypnosis has been examined as a complementary intervention. This PRISMA ScR scoping review mapped the extent and characteristics of the evidence base, intervention features, and research gaps for clinical hypnosis in chronic non-cancer pain. We included 48 intervention studies involving 3,166 participants, encompassing randomized controlled trials and other study designs. Hypnosis was applied to nociceptive, neuropathic, nociplastic, and mixed pain presentations using diverse techniques and delivery formats. Outcomes most fre

Using Hypnosis to Alleviate Pain During rTMS: A Case Report.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is generally well tolerated, with few or no side effects. However, some patients may experience unpleasant sensations such as mild to moderate pain during scalp stimulation. For these patients, any discomfort or pain associated with the procedure may have a negative impact on therapeutic adherence. Hypnosis could offer an interesting option for alleviating pain or discomfort associated with rTMS. We present the case of a patient treated with rTMS, for whom the intensity of stimulation was difficult to tolerate from the first session due to he

Treatment of plantar warts using medical hypnosis: a case report.

In this case study, we describe the case of an adult patient who struggled with persistent warts on the plantar surface of the foot for several years. All medical therapies were exhausted, so the patient turned to medical hypnosis as a last resort. Despite years of unsuccessful conventional medical treatments, the patient experienced complete resolution of all his warts after three sessions of medical hypnosis. The suggestions used in the treatment included strengthening the immune system, increasing blood flow in the foot, visualizing immune mechanisms destroying infected cells, and the regro

Immediate hypnosis effects and outcome predictors in chronic nociplastic pain.

This study used data from a randomized controlled trial on the efficacy of hypnosis with analgesic suggestions relative to hypnosis with nonspecific suggestions to explore two areas. The first was the immediate effects of each hypnosis session and their relevance to the treatment induced change in pain intensity. The second was the identification of variables associated with the beneficial effects of hypnosis treatment in the form of reducing pain intensity and pain quality. The predictive value of the initial treatment response, hypnotizability, and the dichotomous variable of pain medication

Elucidating Tourette's syndrome: perspectives from hypnosis, attention and self-regulation.

Biological psychiatry favors drug treatment over non-pharmacological intervention and shapes the way clinicians both treat and understand Tourette's Syndrome (TS). However, drug treatments for TS involve side effects and are potentially toxic to the central nervous system. Moreover, current pharmacological treatments are largely ineffective and at best only provide a modest symptom reduction. In this paper, we describe how non-pharmacological treatments such as focused attention can modulate, reduce, or indeed entirely eliminate the symptoms of TS as well as elucidate the underlying neural mec

Acute pregnancy-associated hypertension treated with hypnosis: a case report.

A 24-year-old patient was treated using hypnotic intervention for acute pregnancy-associated hypertension. The patient displayed evidence of secondary arrest of labor and acute onset of signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia. Hypnotic intervention resulted in normal vaginal delivery without complications or further evidence of morbidity secondary to a hypertensive episode. Hypnosis as an adjunct in the treatment of pre-eclampsia should be investigated further.

[Exploding Head Syndrome Treated by Self-Hypnosis: A Case Report].

Exploding Head Syndrome (EHS) is a sensory parasomnia occurring at transitions between wakefulness and sleep, during which patients hear a loud, brief, and intense noise that awakens them. Reassurance is generally indicated, but there is no validated treatment for patients with frequent and disabling symptoms. We report the case of a man who developed EHS after discontinuing chronic cannabis use. Daily symptoms and the associated distress led to a relapse into use. In parallel, the patient learned Schultz autogenic training through an artificial intelligence tool. This training was undertaken

Addressing fear of breast cancer recurrence through process-oriented hypnosis.

Fear of cancer recurrence is a common and understandable reaction for a woman with a history of breast cancer. A certain amount of fear about cancer recurring - in other words, a healthy protective concern for the body - may help a woman take the initiative to get continuing care and drive her to make healthy lifestyle changes. All too often though, a woman's fears and her reactions to them can dominate her life long after the cancer itself has been successfully treated. This article briefly describes clinically relevant "fear of cancer recurrence" (FCR) and then discusses how process-oriented

[Patient satisfaction regarding hypnosis-assisted oocyte retrieval under local anesthesia].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the satisfaction of patients accompanied by hypnosis during oocyte retrieval under local anesthesia. METHODS: This cohort study included patients undergoing oocyte retrieval under local anesthesia with hypnotic support provided either by a hypnotherapist or via a virtual reality headset between November 2022 and November 2023. A questionnaire was distributed after the procedure, assessing satisfaction with hypnosis for pain and anxiety management, as well as the experience of pain (visual analog scale) and anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) during the procedure. Using EEG to measure MMN during hypnosis: A preliminary study.

Hypnosis is commonly used to deal with acute and chronic pain, anxiety, or addictions. However, it is difficult to quantify its effectiveness and measure it in real-time. In this preliminary study, we aimed to identify biomarkers using EEG during hypnosis. We developed an experimental protocol based on a covert attentional task, not requiring the participants to answer to any stimuli neither focus on them, but rather to focus and follow the hypnotist suggestions. We were able to identify an evoked related potential (ERP), the mismatch negativity, elicited by the sound played during the experim

Hypnosis with depressed children and teens: Building skills, creating connection.

Depression in children and teens has been on the rise for several years. Recent increases in anxiety and loneliness, both contributors to the development of depression, are putting more young people at risk for chronic and comorbid mental health struggles. The use of hypnosis with depressed children offers the opportunity to target the identified skills depressed and anxious children need and is a modality clinicians should embrace. This article describes how to create hypnotic interventions focusing on improved emotional and cognitive management, better sleep, and the ability to make positive

Hypnosis in High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound for Thyroid Nodule Ablation.

BACKGROUND Current medical technologies enable physicians to treat patients outside operating rooms using minimally invasive techniques. Non-operating room anesthesia (NORA) represents a growing field of medicine, with an increasing number of cases performed over the last decade. As a result, anesthesia providers will need to enhance their understanding of the resources, medical and paramedical staff, and environment outside the operating room. Patients undergoing such procedures under light conscious sedation still experience discomfort such as pain and anxiety, thus requiring the use of pain

Raising Relational Critical Consciousness to Enhance Empathy in Clinical Hypnosis.

Empathic involvement theory suggests that a trance-like experience occurs when a cross-relational empathic connection is achieved. The empathically-laden relational phenomenon is thought to enhance hypnosis. Empathic involvement theory suggests hypnotizables are highly empathic. By the same token, the relational empathic connection necessitates a highly empathic practitioner of hypnosis. In the United States, where values of individualism are thought to be socially embedded and internalized, practitioners of hypnosis and clients alike may be impeded by an individually oriented worldview to emp

Pain perception and hypnosis: findings from recent functional neuroimaging studies.

Hypnosis modulates pain perception and tolerance by affecting cortical and subcortical activity in brain regions involved in these processes. By reviewing functional neuroimaging studies focusing on pain perception under hypnosis, the authors aimed to identify brain activation-deactivation patterns occurring in hypnosis-modulated pain conditions. Different changes in brain functionality occurred throughout all components of the pain network and other brain areas. The anterior cingulate cortex appears to be central in modulating pain circuitry activity under hypnosis. Most studies also showed t
