Remote Patient Monitoring‑Enabled Automated Peritoneal Dialysis and Clinical Outcomes: A Nationwide Real-World Cohort Study from Taiwan.

KEY POINTS: Remote patient monitoring-enabled automated peritoneal dialysis was associated with improved survival and technique survival compared with conventional automated peritoneal dialysis. Remote patient monitoring‑enabled automated peritoneal dialysis was associated with significantly fewer annual hospitalizations compared with conventional automated peritoneal dialysis. The association between remote patient monitoring-enabled automated peritoneal dialysis and reduced hemodialysis transfer was more pronounced in younger patients and icodextrin users. INTRODUCTION: Remote patient monit

Incremental start and clinical outcomes in peritoneal dialysis: International results from PDOPPS.

BackgroundThe impact of incremental peritoneal dialysis (PD) on outcomes is poorly understood, and there is a paucity of evidence informing best practices regarding the dialysis dose at the commencement of PD. This international prospective cohort study aimed to compare PD prescription practices at dialysis commencement and their subsequent association with clinical outcomes.MethodsAdult patients who started PD for less than three months at the time of enrolment in the Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (PDOPPS) between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2017 were included. Peritoneal Dialysis-Related Infection Rates and Outcomes: Results From the Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (PDOPPS).

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis carries high morbidity for PD patients. Understanding the characteristics and risk factors for peritonitis can guide regional development of prevention strategies. We describe peritonitis rates and the associations of selected facility practices with peritonitis risk among countries participating in the Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (PDOPPS). STUDY DESIGN: Observational prospective cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: 7,051 adult PD patients in 209 facilities across 7 countries (Australia, New Zea

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis: a single-center experience and review of the literature.

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is a serious and often fatal complication of long-term PD with severe malnutrition and poor prognosis. It causes progressive obstruction and encapsulation of the bowel. This retrospective study reviews our experience and that reviewed in the literature concerning EPS. It refers to a total of 1966 patients treated with chronic PD between 1974 and 2008. Twenty one of them (1.1%) developed EPS, with the incidence increasing with the duration of PD. Mean age of our patients with EPS was 43, ranging from 18 to 71 years, 8 were men and 13 women with a mean bo

Pathophysiology, prevention and treatment of postoperative peritoneal adhesions: a WSES narrative.

BACKGROUND: Adhesions are a common complication following surgery, and they can cause significant morbidity. However, adhesions are not easily diagnosed with imaging, and often only become apparent when they cause intestinal obstruction symptoms. The pathophysiology of adhesion formation is complex, thus despite advances in surgical techniques and postoperative care, adhesions remain a persistent problem in clinical practice. Despite evidence for efficacy of some strategies in reducing adhesion formation question remain regarding the indications and impact on clinically relevant outcomes. The

The role of technological progress vs. accidental discoveries and clinical experience.

The 50th anniversary of dialysotherapy celebrated by nephrologists around the world in 2012 provided an opportunity for discussion on the role of clinical experience in relation to technological progress in the evolution of dialysis, especially of recently observed inadequate decrease in mortality/morbidity rates of patients on chronic dialysis. My report, based on almost 50 years of career in nephrology, refers the evolution of dialysis, from catharsis to modern dialysotherapy with special attention devoted to nowadays gravely underestimated role of clinical experience and personalized profes

Acute Generalized Exanthematous Pustulosis: Clinical Features, Differential Diagnosis, and Management.

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is a rare, acute, severe cutaneous adverse reaction mainly attributed to drugs, although other triggers, including infections, vaccinations, ingestion of various substances, and spider bites, have also been described. AGEP is characterized by the development of edema and erythema followed by the eruption of multiple punctate, non-follicular, sterile pustules and subsequent desquamation. AGEP typically has a rapid onset and prompt resolution within a few weeks. The differential diagnoses for AGEP are broad and include infectious, inflammatory, a

Adhesion prevention agents for gynaecological surgery: an overview of Cochrane reviews.

BACKGROUND: Intraperitoneal adhesions are associated with considerable co-morbidity and have large financial and public health repercussions. They have secondary effects that include chronic pelvic pain, dyspareunia, subfertility and bowel obstruction. In women with adhesions, subsequent surgery is more difficult, often takes longer, and is associated with a higher complication rate (Broek 2013). The significant burden of adhesions has led to the development of several anti-adhesion agents, although there is disagreement as to their relative effectiveness. OBJECTIVES: To summarise evidence de

Unraveling the association between chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy and peritoneal Dialysis.

BackgroundChronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is a rare disease seen in the general population and has been reported as showing an increased incidence in the peritoneal dialysis (PD) population, as documented in case reports.MethodsWe conducted a case-control study using data from the Taichung Veterans General Hospital electric medical record database from the years 2010 to 2023. We defined cases as CIDP with End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and controls as without CIDP. A logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the association between CIDP and dialysis

Non-diabetic hypoglycemia: bridging gaps in diagnosis and treatment: a position statement report by the Arabic Association for the Study of Diabetes and Metabolism (AASD).

BACKGROUND: Non-diabetic hypoglycemia presents a substantial diagnostic challenge due to its diverse and often nonspecific symptomatology. The resultant delay in diagnosis can lead to a myriad of misdiagnoses. This misidentification not only prolongs patient suffering but also elevates the risk of severe complications, such as permanent neurologic damage and mortality. Recognizing the clinical nuances of non-diabetic hypoglycemia is paramount for timely and accurate diagnosis, which ultimately enhances patient outcomes and safety. MAIN BODY: A position statement has been formulated by the Ara
