INTRODUCTION: Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) cause significant impairment in quality of life. Although they share similar genetic factors, environmental precipitants, and pathophysiological mechanisms, there is little evidence on the risk of developing subsequent IMIDs after an initial IMID diagnosis. We sought to assess the risk of developing subsequent IMIDs among patients diagnosed with an initial IMID.
METHODS: This retrospective matched cohort study used a large US commercial health insurance claims database (01/01/2006-09/30/2015). The risks of developing secondary IMIDs

OBJECTIVE: New-onset immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) and flares of pre-existing IMIDs have been reported following anti- SARS-CoV2 vaccination. Our study aimed at describing a retrospective cohort of patients developing new-onset IMIDs or flares of known IMIDs within 30 days after any anti-SARS-CoV2 vaccine dose.
METHODS: We evaluated clinical records of all inpatients and outpatients referring to our institution between February 2021 and February 2022 with any clinical manifestations. We then selected those having received any anti-SARS-CoV2 vaccine dose within the prior 30 day

The antiepileptic activity of α-substituted acetamides, lactams, and cyclic imides has been known for over six decades. We recently proposed an α-substituted amide group as the minimum pharmacophore responsible for inhibition of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors by these compounds, with the implication that inhibition of these receptors in the brain might be the unifying mechanism of action for these classes of antiepileptic drugs. In order to realize the pharmacological potential of these orally administered drugs, the relevant aspects of solid-state chemistry and pharmaceutics (incl

OBJECTIVES: Although patients with immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMID) are thought to be more susceptible to viral infections, it is unclear whether their presentation differs between patients with IMID and healthy controls. This study aimed to investigate the symptom pattern of common viral infections in patients with IMID and compare it with controls without IMIDs.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study conducted between 1 February and 30 April 2020, using a questionnaire.
SETTING: Seven tertiary regional care centers in Germany, which specialised in the care of patients with IMID (namel

While immunomodulatory imide drugs (IMiDs) have been authorised for treatment of haematological cancers for over two decades, the appreciation of their ability to stimulate antitumour T cell and natural killer (NK) cell responses is relatively recent. Clinical trial data increasingly show that targeted immunotherapies, such as antibodies, T cells, and vaccines, improve outcomes when delivered in combination with the IMiD derivatives lenalidomide or pomalidomide. Here, we review these clinical data to highlight the relevance of IMiDs in combinatorial immunotherapy for both haematological and so

BACKGROUND & AIMS: It is not clear whether the co-occurrence of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) affects the course of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). We investigated the occurrence of IMIDs in relation to onset of IBD and the effects of concurrent IMIDs on IBD outcomes in a nationwide study of the Danish population.
METHODS: We used a nationwide cohort of all individuals diagnosed with IBD, including Crohn's disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC), in Denmark from 2007 through 2016 (n = 14,377). Patients were match with individuals without IBD from the general population (con

INTRODUCTION: The treatment options for patients with multiple myeloma (MM) remain limited. Immunomodulatory agents (IMiDs), such as thalidomide and lenalidomide, have changed the landscape in the treatment of patients with MM while newer IMiDs such as pomalidomide are showing promise in early clinical trials.
AREAS COVERED: This review focuses on the biologic rationales of IMiDs and the clinical results supporting their use in MM. It includes data on the new IMiD, pomalidomide and also explores the possible utility of combining IMiDs with other agents. A PubMed search and abstracts from onco

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Dysregulation of the immune system and chronic inflammation, the primary drivers of post-acute sequalae of corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) (PASC), are at the heart of immune-mediated inflammatory disease (IMID) pathology. As PASC remains underexplored in IMID patients, we explored the risk of PASC in patients with IMIDs including spondylarthritis (SpA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), hidradenitis suppurativa, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease and psoriasis compared to a matched non-IMID population.
METHODS: In this cohort study, all individuals with a recorded positive

IMPORTANCE: Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) and COVID-19 are independently associated with venous thromboembolisms (VTEs).
OBJECTIVE: To determine if individuals with IMIDs are at higher risk of VTE following COVID-19 infection compared with individuals without IMIDs.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Population-based matched cohort study using multiple deterministically linked health administrative databases from Ontario, Canada, and including patients testing positive for COVID-19 between January 1, 2020, and December 30, 2021, and followed up until March 31, 2022. BACKGROUND: COVID-19 may present different degrees of severity. Viral infections in patients with rheumatic inflammatory diseases (R-IMID) trend to present more severe disease. However, data comparing the severity of the disease between R-IMID and the general population are scarce.
OBJECTIVES: To compare predisposing factors, clinical, serological features, and severity of COVID-19 infection in patients with and without R-IMID.
METHODS: Case-control study in a single University Hospital. We included all consecutive patients with a diagnosis of an R-IMID and COVID-19 infection up to March 31s

We present an age-structured mathematical model of malaria and pneumonia to study the effect of two capacity-building interventions: Integrated Management of Infectious Diseases (IMID) and On-site Support Services (OSS). IMID leads to a reduction in malaria prevalence by more than 2·4% across the [0,5), [5,14) and [14,50) age groups. IMID + OSS reduces it by more than 16·0% across all age groups. IMID decreases pneumonia prevalence by more than 3·0% across all age groups while IMID + OSS decreases it by more than 1·0% across all age groups. The number of malaria and pneumonia deaths is reduced

BACKGROUND: Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMID) predispose to a higher infection risk by modifying the host's immune response, which acts as a key factor in SARS-CoV-2 infection resolution. Recent publications show that IMID patients and its treatments do not worsen the outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with IMID who required hospital admission due to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Secondly, to compare clinical characteristics and outcomes between patients who required hospital admission due to SARS-CoV-2 infection w

PURPOSE: The pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) involves aberrant complement activation and is a leading cause of vision loss worldwide. Complement aberrations are also implicated in many systemic immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs), but the relationship between AMD and these conditions remains undescribed. The aim of this study is to first assess the association between AMD and IMIDs, and then assess the risk of AMD in patients with specific IMIDs associated with AMD.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study and cohort study.
SUBJECTS AND CONTROLS: Patients with AMD were
