Response facilitation in the four great apes: is there a role for empathy?

Contagious yawning is a form of response facilitation found in humans and other primates in which observing a model yawning enhances the chance that the observer will also yawn. Because contagious yawning seems to be more easily triggered when models are conspecifics or have a strong social bond with the observer, it has been proposed that contagious yawning is linked to empathy. A possible way to test this hypothesis is to analyze whether individuals' responses differ when they observe models yawning or performing different involuntary (i.e., nose wiping, scratching) and voluntary (i.e., hand

Aplasics born without hands mirror the goal of hand actions with their feet.

The premotor and parietal mirror neuron system (MNS) is thought to contribute to the understanding of observed actions by mapping them onto "corresponding" motor programs of the observer [1-24], but how would the MNS respond to the observation of hand actions if the observer never had hands? Would it not show changes of blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) signal, because the observer lacks motor programs that can resonate [12, 25, 26], or would it show significant changes because the observer has motor programs for the foot or mouth with corresponding goals [15, 17, 19, 27, 28]? Developmental dyspraxia is not limited to imitation in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Impaired imitation of skilled gestures is commonly reported in autism. Questions, however, remain as to whether impaired imitation is associated with a more generalized deficit in performance of gestures consistent with a dyspraxia and whether the pattern of errors differs from that observed in typically developing children. To address these questions, praxis in 21 high-functioning children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) was compared with 24 typically developing controls using a traditional approach in which performance was evaluated through detailed examination of error types. Children

Towards a common neural substrate in the immediate and effective inhibition of stuttering.

Stuttering can be effectively inhibited via exogenous sensory signals (e.g., speaking in unison or using altered auditory feedback) or by using endogenous motoric strategies (e.g., singing or therapeutically implementing long vowel prolongations to reduce speech rates). We propose that these channels, which superficially appear to be diametrically opposite, centrally converge in the engagement of mirror neurons for fluent gestural productions. Sensory changes incurred via exogenous speech signals allow for direct engagement of mirror systems, while endogenous motor strategies appear to require

No excuses: televised pornography harms children.

All youngsters are at some risk from exposure to televised pornography, as described above. At particular risk for harm, however, are the most vulnerable children in our society--children in single-parent homes, children with mental and emotional disturbances, mentally challenged children, children who have been physically and/or sexually abused, and children in dysfunctional families. Youngsters for whom television serves as a babysitter or parental surrogate unfortunately are exposed to few competing influences to television viewing. In addition, parents in such homes are least likely to kno

Evidence for a distributed hierarchy of action representation in the brain.

Complex human behavior is organized around temporally distal outcomes. Behavioral studies based on tasks such as normal prehension, multi-step object use and imitation establish the existence of relative hierarchies of motor control. The retrieval errors in apraxia also support the notion of a hierarchical model for representing action in the brain. In this review, three functional brain imaging studies of action observation using the method of repetition suppression are used to identify a putative neural architecture that supports action understanding at the level of kinematics, object center

Neonatal imitation predicts infant rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) social and anxiety-related behaviours at one year.

The identification of early markers that predict the development of specific social trajectories is critical to understand the developmental and neurobiological underpinnings of healthy social development. We investigated, in infant rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), whether newborns' capacity to imitate facial gestures is a valid predictive marker for the emergence of social competencies later in development, at one year of age. Here we first assessed whether infant macaques (N = 126) imitate lipsmacking gestures (a macaque affiliative expression) performed by a human experimenter in their fir

Family history of suicidal behavior predicts impulsive-aggressive behavior levels in psychiatric outpatients.

OBJECTIVES: Impulsive-aggressive traits have been proposed as mediators of the transmission of suicidal behavior in families. Our aim was to investigate the association between family history of suicidal behavior, and expressions of impulsivity and aggressive behavior, in a clinical population. METHODS: A sample of n=474 psychiatric outpatient subjects were assessed by means of standardized interviews for Axis I and II psychopathology, history of suicidal behavior in subjects and their family, and measures of impulsive-aggressive behaviors (IAB). RESULTS: A total of n=38 (8%) probands had a

Indirect behavioral treatment of erectile failure and premature ejaculation in a man without a partner.

Premature ejaculation and erectile failure in a 54-year-old man were treated by a combination of exposure in vivo and social skills training. The intervention was not aimed directly at the dysfunctional sexual response but at features of the patient's interpersonal behavior hypothesized to be instrumental in maintaining it. Change was assessed on the basis of the patient's records of weekly rate of successful intercourse, performance of target behaviors, and associated anxiety within a single-case multiple baseline design. Change occurred only with the introduction of treatment and not before

Who are the young children for whom best practices in reading are ineffective? An experimental and longitudinal study.

The primary purpose of this study was to identify student characteristics that reliably predict responsiveness and nonresponsiveness to generally effective early literacy interventions. Participants were 104 children, including 7 with special needs and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), who were tested in kindergarten and first grade. Responsiveness/nonresponsiveness status was determined after 2 years during which children participated in best practice instruction (a) in kindergarten and first grade, (b) in kindergarten only, (c) in first grade only, or (d) in neither year. Localizing apraxia in corticobasal syndrome: a morphometric MRI study.

Apraxia localization has relied on voxel-based, lesion-symptom mapping studies in left hemisphere stroke patients. Studies on the neural substrates of different manifestations of apraxia in neurodegenerative disorders are scarce. The primary aim of this study was to look into the neural substrates of different manifestations of apraxia in a cohort of corticobasal syndrome patients (CBS) by use of cortical thickness. Twenty-six CBS patients were included in this cross-sectional study. The Goldenberg apraxia test (GAT) was applied. 3D-T1-weighted images were analyzed via the automated recon-all

Distinct cognitive components and their neural substrates underlying praxis and language deficits following left hemisphere stroke.

Apraxia is characterised by multiple deficits of higher motor functions, primarily caused by left hemisphere (LH) lesions to parietal-frontal praxis networks. While previous neuropsychological and lesion studies tried to relate the various apraxic deficits to specific lesion sites, a comprehensive analysis of the different apraxia profiles and the related (impaired) motor-cognitive processes as well as their differential neural substrates in LH stroke is lacking. To reveal the cognitive mechanisms that underlie the different patterns of praxis and (related) language deficits, we applied princi

Enhanced Automatic Action Imitation and Intact Imitation-Inhibition in Schizophrenia.

Imitation plays a key role in social learning and in facilitating social interactions and likely constitutes a basic building block of social cognition that supports higher-level social abilities. Recent findings suggest that patients with schizophrenia have imitation impairments that could contribute to the social impairments associated with the disorder. However, extant studies have specifically assessed voluntary imitation or automatic imitation of emotional stimuli without controlling for potential confounders. The imitation impairments seen might therefore be secondary to other cognitive,

Imitation of meaningless gestures in normal aging.

While imitation of meaningless gestures is a gold standard in the assessment of apraxia in patients with either stroke or neurodegenerative diseases, little is known about potential age-related effects on this measure. A significant body of literature has indicated that different mechanisms (i.e., executive functioning, visuospatial skills, sensory integration, body knowledge, categorical apprehension) may underlie the performance depending on imitation conditions (i.e., finger/hand, uni-/bimanual, symmetric/asymmetric, crossed/uncrossed configurations). However, neither the effects of these c

The introduction of IMITATE-R and its comparison with the IMITATE treatment method in the naming ability of two Persian speaking aphasic patients.

Mirror neurons that have properties of audio/visual-acuity play a key role in imitation of movement performance. Since speech is a collection of coordinated movements in the producing organs, observing and imitation of speech movements can stimulate these neurons. In addition, observing hand movements trigger some actions related to the verbal cortex in the network of mirror neurons. According to the hypothesis of mirror neurons, new therapeutic approaches, including IMITATE, have been proposed for patients with aphasia. In the present study, using the IMITATE programme, a new therapeutic appr

Object words modulate the activity of the mirror neuron system during action imitation.

BACKGROUND: Although research has demonstrated that the mirror neuron system (MNS) plays a crucial role in both action imitation and action-related semantic processing, whether action-related words can inversely modulate the MNS activity remains unclear. METHODS: Here, three types of task-irrelevant words (body parts, verbs, and manufactured objects) were presented to examine the modulation effect of these words on the MNS activity during action observation and imitation. Twenty-two participants were recruited for the fMRI scanning and remaining data from 19 subjects were reported here. RESU

Limb apraxia in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: There are almost no studies on apraxia in people with multiple sclerosis. Although the white matter is damaged in MS, it is not the only location in which the pathological changes are present. Demyelinated lesions in the cortex have recently been recognized as important components of multiple sclerosis pathology. The aim of this study was to determine whether apraxia is present among people with MS, and the importance of demographic characteristics and impairment of functional systems at conceptualization and execution of movements. METHODS: The experimental group consisted of

An update on the Conceptual-Production Systems model of apraxia: evidence from stroke.

Limb apraxia is a neurological disorder characterized by an inability to pantomime and/or imitate gestures. It is more commonly observed after left hemisphere damage (LHD), but has also been reported after right hemisphere damage (RHD). The Conceptual-Production Systems model (Roy, 1996) suggests that three systems are involved in the control of purposeful movements: the conceptual, the production and the sensory/perceptual system. Depending on which system is damaged different patterns of apraxia are expressed. To determine the apraxia pattern, pantomime, delayed, and concurrent imitation tas
