Stress coping strategy in Japanese patients with eating disorders: relationship with bulimic and impulsive behaviors.

Although maladaptive coping strategies in eating disorder patients have been reported, the relationship between impulsivity and coping strategy has not previously been studied. Subjects consisted of 43 patients with anorexia nervosa restricting type (AN-R), 42 patients with anorexia nervosa binge eating/purging type (AN-BP), 71 patients with bulimia nervosa purging type (BN), and 97 controls. The Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations was used to evaluate coping strategies. Only AN-BP patients had a significantly lower task oriented-coping score than controls, and AN-R and BN patient groups

Reward deficiency syndrome: a biogenetic model for the diagnosis and treatment of impulsive, addictive, and compulsive behaviors.

The dopaminergic system, and in particular the dopamine D2 receptor, has been implicated in reward mechanisms. The net effect of neurotransmitter interaction at the mesolimbic brain region induces "reward" when dopamine (DA) is released from the neuron at the nucleus accumbens and interacts with a dopamine D2 receptor. "The reward cascade" involves the release of serotonin, which in turn at the hypothalmus stimulates enkephalin, which in turn inhibits GABA at the substania nigra, which in turn fine tunes the amount of DA released at the nucleus accumbens or "reward site." It is well known that

Clinical Approach to Impulse Control-Related Behavioral Disorders in Parkinson's Disease: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control-related behavioral disorders refer to a group of compulsive behaviors seen in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), comprising impulse control disorders (ICD), dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS), and punding. Over the years, numerous studies have been published on their prevalence, risk factors, neuroimaging, genetics, and management. More evidence now suggests that each disorder involves a distinct neurobiological mechanism. Although our understanding has improved, early recognition and appropriate treatment remain a significant challenge for clinicians, patie

Beyond impulsivity, predicting non-suicidal self-injurious behavior in adolescents: A network approach.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a key factor in the onset of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) during adolescence; however, the impact of other psychological factors on this relationship remains uncertain. OBJECTIVES: This study mainly explored the complex network relationship between general mental health status and NSSI in adolescents. METHODS: We surveyed 1127 adolescents regarding their experiences with NSSI and conducted detailed assessments of their mental health status, attitudes toward animals, and demographic characteristics, including age, gender, Body Mass Index, socioeconomic status, an

The Mediation Role of Emotional Symptoms Between Impulsivity Traits and Problematic Gaming Behavior in Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Gaming is a global activity of which the largest number of players are adolescents. Although some studies have shown the risks of gaming, very little is known about the association between the proposed video game addiction and the temperamental traits or behavioral (internalizing/externalizing) problems that lead adolescents to problematic gaming. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a model that explains the mediation effect of I/E problems on the effect of impulsivity traits on adolescents' gaming addiction. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 850 S

Managing impulse control and related behavioral disorders in Parkinson's disease: where we are in 2025?

INTRODUCTION: Impulse control and related behavioral disorders (ICBDs) commonly complicate Parkinson's disease (PD) course. The ICBDs spectrum encompasses two groups of conditions, with distinct pathophysiology: proper 'impulse control disorders (ICDs)' (e.g. gambling) and the 'ICDs related disorders (ICDs-RD)' (e.g. punding). Behavioral disturbances are associated with dopamine replacement therapies. ICBDs affect quality of life of patients and caregivers, making their management essential for reducing PD overall burden. AREAS COVERED: This article reviews current management strategies for I

Binegativity, Childhood Maltreatment, Impulsivity, and Risky Behaviors Among Heavy Drinking Bisexual Women.

Bisexual women report more alcohol use and sexual risk-taking than lesbian or heterosexual women. Few studies have examined the underlying mechanisms associating stress sources (binegativity, childhood trauma) with drinking and sexual risk-taking behaviors among bisexual women. Impulsivity may be one such mechanism. This study tested if impulsivity served as a mechanism between childhood trauma, binegativity, alcohol use, and sexual risk-taking. Participants (N = 225) were cisgender, heavy drinking, bisexual women ages 18-30 who completed an online survey. Results showed a significant indirect

The association between childhood abuse and addictive behaviors in adolescents: Understanding the role of impulsivity and irritability.

Previous studies have investigated the associations between childhood abuse experiences and addictive behaviors in traumatized adolescents. However, few studies have examined the distinctions of underlying mechanisms of the associations between childhood abuse and different addictive behaviors. To fill this gap, the current study used multiple mediation models to assess the relationship between childhood abuse experiences and smoking, alcohol, internet addiction in adolescents, and the possible mediation effects of impulsivity and irritability. Data were collected from 1601 high school student

Adiphenine Alleviates Impulsive-Like Behaviors in Aged Mice by Inhibiting Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors.

Postoperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) are prevalent complications in the elderly following surgical interventions and anesthesia, with the underlying protective and damaging mechanisms remaining largely elusive. Impulsive-like behaviors and a decline in cognitive function were observed in the mouse model of PND established through tibial fracture surgery, accompanied by increased activity of astrocytes in the hippocampal CA1 region. Additionally, transcriptome sequencing revealed increased expression of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in PND. In this study, we aimed to invest

Developmental Pathways of Inattention, Hyperactivity/Impulsivity, and Disruptive Behaviors: A Longitudinal, Person-Centered Approach.

In the present study, we explore the utility of latent transition analysis to better understand the developmental course of youths' externalizing psychopathology using the Oregon ADHD-1000 data set. Symptomatic latent classes at each age (i.e., 9, 12, and 15 years) were identified, and the corresponding latent transition probabilities and most common latent transition pathways were described. Impairment was examined for clinical validation. The most notable findings included a group of youths with persistent inattention from childhood through adolescence, distinct from youths who decreased in

The Intergenerational Association Between Parents' Problem Gambling and Impulsivity-Hyperactivity/Inattention Behaviors in Children.

Despite the well-established association between problem gambling and ADHD core categories of impulsivity-hyperactivity and inattention, the link between parents' problem gambling and impulsivity-hyperactivity/inattention (IH/I) behaviors in children has not been investigated. This study investigated the association between parents' problem gambling and children's IH/I behaviors while controlling for potential confounding variables. A population-based prospective cohort followed-up from kindergarten to age 30, the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Kindergarten Children (QLSKC), provided data over t

Overlapping dimensional phenotypes of impulsivity and compulsivity explain co-occurrence of addictive and related behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Impulsivity and compulsivity have been implicated as important transdiagnostic dimensional phenotypes with potential relevance to addiction. We aimed to develop a model that conceptualizes these constructs as overlapping dimensional phenotypes and test whether different components of this model explain the co-occurrence of addictive and related behaviors. METHODS: A large sample of adults (N = 487) was recruited through Amazon's Mechanical Turk and completed self-report questionnaires measuring impulsivity, intolerance of uncertainty, obsessive beliefs, and the severity of 6 addict

Executive functioning and risk-taking behavior in Parkinson's disease patients with impulse control disorders.

Impulse control disorders (ICD) are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and are associated with dopaminergic medication. The purpose of this study was to investigate executive function and risk-taking behavior in PD patients with ICD. 17 PD patients with ICD (ICD-PD) were compared to 20 PD patients without ICD (CTRL-PD) using neuropsychological and experimental tasks. Executive functions were assessed using standard executive testing (Conner's Performance Test, Modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Trail Making Test and phonological verbal fluency). Subjects were also submitted to an experiment

Impulse control and related behaviors after bilateral subthalamic stimulation in patients with Parkinson's disease.

The effect of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN DBS) on impulse control and related behaviors (ICRB) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) is conflicting. We evaluated ICRB before and after bilateral STN DBS in patients with PD. A total of 89 patients with PD treated with bilateral DBS of STN underwent retrospective assessment of ICRB before and after DBS. Of the 89 patients studied, 20 patients (22.5%) had ICRB in the preoperative period. In 13 of those 20 patients (65%), preoperative ICRB improved, including resolution in six patients. Nine patients developed de novo ICRB a

Impulsivity as a moderator of the intention-behavior relationship for illicit drug use in patients undergoing treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Evident across clinical practice and clinical trials is a divergence between stated intentions and subsequent drug-related behaviors in substance abuse treatment settings. Impulsivity, itself related to drug abuse, may be one variable which may moderate the degree of disconnect in the intention-behavior relationship. The present study examines the relationship between self-stated desire to quit, impulsivity, and drug use in a group of outpatients receiving methadone maintenance treatment. In particular, we examined the direct and moderating influence of different facets of impuls

Neural basis of individual differences in impulsivity: contributions of corticolimbic circuits for behavioral arousal and control.

The objective of the current study was to analyze the neural correlates of behavioral arousal and inhibitory control as they relate to individual differences in impulsivity via well-established functional MRI amygdala reactivity and prefrontal inhibitory control paradigms in healthy adult subjects. Impulsivity correlated positively with activity of the bilateral ventral amygdala, parahippocampal gyrus, dorsal anterior cingulate gyrus (BA 32), and bilateral caudate. Conversely, impulsivity correlated negatively with activity of the dorsal amygdala and ventral prefrontal cortex (BA 47). Together
