IMPORTANCE: A common trigger for relapse in drug addiction is the experience of craving via exposure to cues previously associated with drug use. Preclinical studies have consistently demonstrated incubation of cue-induced drug-seeking during the initial phase of abstinence, followed by a decline over time. In humans, the incubation effect has been shown for alcohol, nicotine, and methamphetamine addictions, but not for heroin or cocaine addiction. BACKGROUND: The interval between the onset of Barrett's oesophagus (BO) and oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) can be termed the incubation period. However, the unrecorded onset of BO precludes its direct observation.
METHODS: Determining the range of intervals between BO diagnosis and OAC within the longest observational BO follow-up study. Exclusion criteria were presence of high-grade dysplasia (HGD) or OAC at baseline, death within <2 years of BO diagnosis, oesophagectomy without HGD/OAC and loss to follow-up. PURPOSE: To investigate the change in biomechanical properties of the cornea induced by high-dose hydrocortisone.
METHODS: The influence of hydrocortisone was investigated in 12 fresh porcine corneas incubated in culture medium of 2.5 muM of hydrocortisone for 7 days. Twelve additional porcine corneas incubated in culture medium without hydrocortisone for the same time served as the control group. Strips of cornea were cut and the stress-strain relationship was measured in a biomaterial tester. Young's modulus was calculated.

To assess the performance of the immunochromatographic test for filariasis, adult Wuchereria bancrofti worms were incubated under different conditions. The scrapie-infected hamster has been considered an excellent model for the study of slow virus diseases of man (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease) and animals. At the moment no therapy is available for the cure of these fatal central nervous system diseases, although several drugs have been tested.
