Epidemiologic comparisons of the sudden infant death syndrome with other major components of infant mortality.

All 1998 resident infant deaths in the 1969--1977 King County, Washington birth cohort of 139,132 resident live births comprise the data base for epidemiologic comparisons of the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) with eight other major infant mortality components: hyaline membrane disease; respiratory distress syndrome; asphyxia of the newborn; immaturity; birth injury; congenital malformation; infection; and "all other." These components were compared with respect to age at death; sex; race; prior fetal loss; prior live-born, now dead; birth plurality; birth weight; maternal age; birth orde

Novel chemical-physical autopsy investigation in sudden infant death and sudden intrauterine unexplained death syndromes.

Aim: Verify the presence of inorganic nanoparticle entities in brain tissue samples from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)/sudden intrauterine unexplained death syndrome (SIUDS) cases. The presence of inorganic debris could be a cofactor that compromises proper brain tissue functionality. Materials & methods: A novel autopsy approach that consists of neuropathological analysis procedures combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy/field emission gun environmental scanning electron microscopy investigations was implemented on 10 SIDS/SIUDS cases, whereas control samples were obtained from 10

Potential Central Nervous System Involvement in Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths and the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) in infancy which includes Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the commonest diagnosed cause of death in the United States for infants 1 month to 1 year of age. Central nervous system mechanisms likely contribute to many of these deaths. We discuss some of these including seizure disorders, prolonged breath holding, arousal from sleep and its habituation, laryngeal reflex apnea potentiated by upper airway infection, and failure of brainstem-mediated autoresuscitation. In the conclusions section, we speculate how lives saved through back sleeping might re

Sudden death of an infant with bronchopulmonary dysplasia and bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy--a vagal death?

A sudden unexpected death is reported in a 15-month old boy, born with an extremely low birth weight and then had suffered prolonged respiratory complications arising from infantile respiratory distress syndrome. The autopsy revealed severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in his lungs with secondary pulmonary heart disease; a tracheotomy was carried out to enable his survival. The cause of death was established as being acute cardiac and pulmonary failure due to severe BPD, rather than mechanical asphyxia. The perilaryngeal lymph nodes were also significantly enlarged and closely surrounded t

The role of alcohol in infant cosleeping deaths.

The well-established epidemiological and neuropathological differences between infants who die alone compared to those in shared sleeping environments indicate that these cohorts have differences. Risk factors in both situations depend on both exogenous and endogenous factors. Although parental consumption of alcohol continues to be cited as a risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) it is difficult to understand how a substance which impairs parental consciousness rather than infant arousal could contribute to SIDS. Surely a more logical mechanism to explain these deaths would be s

Illustrations of Unexpected Infant Sleep Deaths.

Case illustrations from central Indiana provide the narrative for infant suffocations because of unsafe sleep environments. Accidental strangulation or suffocation in bed is caused by co-bedding, blankets and pillows in cribs, or wedging and entrapment. Knowledge of the evidence-based risks associated with case data may assist further in the prevention of unexpected infant sleep deaths and may better inform best practice for death scene investigation including forensic nurses.

Dehydration deaths in infants and young children.

Dehydration in developed countries is an uncommon but important mechanism resulting in the death of infants and children. The clinicopathological features of a series of 37 fatal dehydration cases autopsied at the Adelaide Children's Hospital over a 33-year period (1961-1993) are presented. Causative factors for dehydration included gastroenteritis (21 cases), gastroenteritis with high environmental temperature (one case), high environmental temperatures (six cases), neglect/failure to thrive (four cases), mental retardation/chromosomal abnormality (three cases), congenital adrenal hyperplasia

Sudden death in infants, children, and adolescents.

Sudden death in infants is rarely due to cardiac disease. Sudden death in children and adolescents is usually associated with cardiac disease. The major congenital lesions associated with sudden death are aortic stenosis, cardiomyopathies, idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, Eisenmenger's syndrome, and cyanotic congenital defects with pulmonary stenosis or atresia. There is a high incidence of postoperative sudden death, especially associated with repair of tetralogy of Fallot and transposition of the great arteries. Cardiac arrhythmias, including the long Q-T syndrome, sick sinus synd

Sudden infant death syndrome in infants of substance-abusing mothers.

A population-based study was performed to determine whether substance abuse during the perinatal period may be a risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The incidence of SIDS was studied in 2143 infants of substance-abusing mothers (ISAM) born in Los Angeles County during 1986 and 1987 who were reported to the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services because of a history of drug exposure or positive urine test results in the mother, infant, or both. By comparing the ISAM birth reports with records of autopsy-proven SIDS in Los Angeles County, we found 19 SIDS cases in the

Vulnerability of the infant brain stem to ischemia: a possible cause of sudden infant death syndrome.

In infants, extreme extension or rotation of the head can occlude one or both vertebral arteries. We sought to determine whether small communicating arteries or asymmetric vertebral arteries could predispose the brain stem to ischemia should such head movements occur. In 68 infants, the carotid, posterior communicating, precommunicator posterior cerebral, basilar and vertebral arteries were fixed in formalin, embedded in resin, the circumferences measured by image analysis, and the relative conductance of blood in each artery per gram of brain calculated. Conductance in the vertebrobasilar and

Improving reporting of infant deaths, maternal deaths and stillbirths in Haryana, India.

Underreporting hampers the accurate estimation of the numbers of infant and maternal deaths and stillbirths in India. In Haryana state, a surveillance-based model - the Maternal Infant Death Review System - was launched in 2013 to try to resolve this issue. The system is a mixture of routine passive data collection and active surveillance by specially recruited and trained field volunteers. The volunteers gather the relevant data from child day-care centres, community health centres, cremation grounds, hospitals, the municipal corporation's offices and primary health centres and regularly visi

Toxicological analysis in sudden infant death syndrome: A call for.

BACKGROUND: In 2006 the obligation of autopsy for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) was introduced in Italy by the Ministry of Health and a national protocol was approved in 2014. No data are yet available concerning its systematic application and our toxicology results raise an epidemiological alert related to SIDS. METHODS: A prospective postmortem investigation including toxicological and genetic analysis on consecutive sudden unexpected death in infants < 1 year of age was conducted in North-East, Italy in the time interval 2019-2024. RESULTS: Unexpected positive toxicological results

A Review Study of Causes of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

PURPOSE: The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant for which no reason can be found after a postmortem examination. The primary causes of SIDS have not been determined. The purpose of this study was to examine the primary causes of this syndrome by reviewing the research results and new theories and in view of recent experimental findings. METHODS: The theories on SIDS were reviewed. The results of computer simulations of this disorder using an isomorphic model that were published in the past were compared to new experimental results and h

Parental obesity and the risk of sudden unexpected infant death.

AIM: To clarify the possible role of accidental asphyxiation/suffocation for infants in shared sleeping situations. METHODS: As it has recently been shown that there is an association between maternal obesity and sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) an index was calculated by dividing parental body mass index (BMI) by the shared sleeping surface area. RESULTS: A much higher index was derived for an obese individual on a narrow sleeping area such as a sofa (50) compared to a thin adult on a queen-sized mattress (5). CONCLUSION: The index may be a way of semi-quantitating high, and low, risk
