Infant mortality review as a vehicle for quality improvement in a local health department.

BACKGROUND: Many communities across the United States have established fetal and infant mortality review (FIMR) programs as a way of gaining insight into the causes of such deaths and of devising and implementing ways to improve the health of pregnant women and their infants. IMR PROCESS: The IMR process in the Jefferson County Department of Health in Birmingham, Alabama, evolved in a somewhat different fashion than that in other communities. A technical review team reviews all the infant deaths in the county, with particular attention to each woman's pregnancy history. A community review tea

Maternal and infant health problems after normal childbirth: a randomised controlled study in Zambia.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The main aim of the study was to discover if a midwife home visiting programme has a significant effect on the prevalence of health problems and breast feeding behaviour of mothers who delivered normally and their healthy fullterm newborn babies, during a period of 42 days after delivery. Another aim was to compare the mothers', the midwife's, and the doctor's findings of prevalence of health problems at the end of the puerperium period. DESIGN: A randomised controlled trial was carried out. One group of mothers and their infants were randomly allocated to a home visiting gr

Global Epidemiology and health risks of Bacillus cereus Infections: Special focus on infant foods.

Bacillus cereus is a common pathogen responsible for gastrointestinal and other complicated disorders, yet epidemiological data and public health measures remain scarce. To bridge these gaps, a bilingual search spaning 50 years identified 266 relevant studies on global B. cereus infection, encompassing 6,135 cases. The global mortality rate for B. cereus infection is 0.9 %. Food poisoning cases account for 94.31 % (5786/6135) of the total infections, with a mortality rate of 0.05 %. B. cereus infections were primarily reported in East Asia, Europe, and North America, with frequent studies in e

Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) exposure and adverse maternal and infant health outcomes: Systematic review.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame retardants found in ambient environment and are measured in humans. There are reports on general PBDE toxicity, including endocrine disrupting properties. Studies on adverse maternal and infant outcomes and underlying toxicity mechanisms needs to be understood. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review to examine the state of science on the relationship between PBDE and adverse maternal/infant health outcomes and related maternal biomarker changes. This literature review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Web of

Supporting women with learning disabilities in infant feeding decisions: UK health care professionals' experiences.

Women with learning disabilities are less likely to breastfeed than other women. They may find it hard to understand or learn feeding techniques or know that they have infant feeding choices. This population may be supported during their pregnancies by a range of professionals with differing priorities and responsibilities towards both the mother and the baby. This puts considerable pressure on health care professionals including, but not limited to, midwives, infant feeding specialists, health visitors and learning disability nurses. Those who support women with learning disabilities through

Understanding links between maternal perinatal posttraumatic stress symptoms and infant socioemotional and physical health.

Maternal posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are associated with adverse consequences for older children, but very few studies have examined links between perinatal maternal PTSS and infant outcomes. Trauma exposure and psychopathology, including PTSS, is often heightened for women during pregnancy through 1 year postpartum. Therefore, the perinatal period may be a critical time for understanding the risk maternal PTSS and other mental health factors pose to the socioemotional and physical health of infants. The present study explored the relation between maternal PTSS and infant socioemotion

The Effect of High and Low Ambient Temperature on Infant Health: A Systematic Review.

Children, and particularly infants, have physiological, anatomic, and social factors that increase vulnerability to temperature extremes. We performed a systematic review to explore the association between acute adverse infant outcomes (children 0-1 years) and exposure to high and low ambient temperatures. MEDLINE (Pubmed), Embase, CINAHL Plus, and Global Health were searched alongside the reference lists of key papers. We included published journal papers in English that assessed adverse infant outcomes related to short-term weather-related temperature exposure. Twenty-six studies met our inc

Maternal mental health and infant and young child undernutrition: protocol for a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health disorder, particularly depression, is one of the leading causes of 'disease related disability' in women that both affects the women but has adverse effect on their children. This can have an impact on mothers' capacity of child care which ultimately increases the risk of infection, malnutrition, impaired growth and behavioural problems in children that might extend to adulthood too. Diminished child growth has an irreversible effect both short and long terms, affecting physical growth, brain development, performance in education, working capacity and increased risk

Worth the Wait? The Effect of Early Term Birth on Maternal and Infant Health.

Early term birth is defined as birth at 37 or 38 weeks gestation. While infants born early term are not considered premature, the medical literature suggests that they have an increased risk of serious adverse health outcomes compared to infants born at term (39 or 40 weeks). Despite these known harms, we document a rise in early term births in the United States from 1989 to the mid-2000s, followed by a decline in recent years. We posit that the recent decline in early term births has been driven by changes in medical practice advocated by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist

[Disclosure of infant HIV status: mothers' experiences and health workers' interpretations in Burkina Faso].

Disclosure of HIV status in infants is a special case which does not correspond to general recommendations for counseling as defined for adults, and few norms exist. Whereas preventing mother to child transmission (PMTCT) programs should result in 700,000 annual disclosures regarding infants born to HIV-positive mothers in Africa, the actual figures are much lower and the conditions for disclosure implementation and its social dimensions in the field are not precisely documented. The aims of this article are to describe and analyze the experience of HIV status disclosure for infants and childr

An exploration of maternal intimate partner violence experiences and infant general health and temperament.

OBJECTIVES: While the women's health consequences of intimate partner violence have received much research attention, less is known about how maternal abuse experiences affect infant health and well-being. Existing studies have also been unable to examine specific types of intimate partner violence such as psychological aggression, physical abuse, and sexual coercion. This secondary data analysis explored the prevalence, patterns, and types of intimate partner violence within a large cohort of mothers and explored the relationship between maternal intimate partner violence experiences and infa
