Dynamics of inequality: mother's education and infant mortality in China, 1970-2001.

In this study, the authors analyze the dynamic relationship between Chinese women's education, their utilization of newly available medical pregnancy care, and their infants' mortality risk. China has undergone enormous social, economic, and political changes over recent decades and is a novel context in which to examine the potential influence of social change and technological innovation on health disparities. The authors consider efficacy, or the ability to quickly absorb and effectively utilize new medical innovations, and argue that the social stratification of efficacy provides an import

Extremely preterm infant mortality rates and cesarean deliveries in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate trends in infant mortality rates and cesarean delivery rates for extremely preterm infants born in the United States. METHODS: This national population-based study used public data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate extremely preterm infants born alive between 22 0/7 and 27 6/7 weeks of gestational age from 1999 to 2005. RESULTS: There were 177,552 extremely preterm infant births (fewer than 1% of all births) from 1999 to 2005. The number of annual extremely preterm births increased by 7% compared with a 4.5% increase for births at all

Community Remoteness, Perinatal Outcomes and Infant Mortality among First Nations in Quebec.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about community remoteness in relation to birth outcomes among Indigenous populations. We assessed whether community remoteness matters for perinatal outcomes and infant mortality in Quebec First Nations communities. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study of all births (n=11,033) to residents of First Nations communities in Quebec 1991-2000, using linked vital statistics data. First Nations communities were grouped by community remoteness into four zones from the least to most remote. RESULTS: Preterm birth rates declined progressively from the least remote (8.0%

Air pollution and postneonatal infant mortality in the United States, 1999-2002.

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to evaluate the relationship between cause-specific postneonatal infant mortality and chronic early-life exposure to particulate matter and gaseous air pollutants across the United States. METHODS: We linked county-specific monitoring data for particles with aerodiameter of < or = 2.5 microm (PM2.5) and < or = 10 microm (PM10), ozone, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide to birth and death records for infants born from 1999 to 2002 in U.S. counties with > 250,000 residents. For each infant, we calculated the average concentration of each pollutant over the first 2 month

Ethnic differences in causes of infant mortality: Texas births, 1989 through 1991.

The mortality rate of African-American infants in Texas is about twice those of Anglo and Hispanic infants, due at least partly to their increased risk of preterm and low-weight birth. We examined the underlying causes of infant deaths from 1989 through 1991 for specific causes that accounted for the racial difference and for those that were associated with those adverse pregnancy outcomes. The overall infant mortality rate was 8.27 per 1000 live births (6.80 for Anglo, 7.72 for Hispanic, and 15.32 for African-American infants). About 37% of all infant deaths (but 48% of African-American death

Ethnic differences in mortality from sudden infant death syndrome in New Zealand.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the factors which might explain the higher mortality from sudden infant death syndrome in Maori infants (7.4/1000 live births in 1986 compared with 3.6 in non-Maori children). DESIGN: A large nationwide case control study. SETTING: New Zealand. 485 infants who died of sudden infant death syndrome were compared with 1800 control infants. There were 229 Maori and 240 non-Maori cases of sudden infant death syndrome (16 cases unassigned) and 353 Maori and 1410 non-Maori controls (37 unassigned). RESULTS: Maori infants had 3.81 times the risk (95% confidence interval 3.06

Background factors in the decline of infant mortality in Sweden 1800-1930.

The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the changing Swedish society during the period 1800-1930 and to highlight factors which may have determined the decline in infant mortality during this period. A women's perspective will be used as a method to approach the problem. The following hypothesis has been formulated: a declining infant mortality was indirectly linked to and mediated through improvements in women's and mothers' living conditions in the past. Health information was successful when women and mothers possessed the necessary prerequisites for understanding and utilizing t

Trends in Maternal, Fetal, and Infant Mortality in the US, 2000-2023.

IMPORTANCE: Accurately measuring maternal mortality trends has been challenging due to changes in data collection. This work disambiguates trends from the effects of introducing the pregnancy checkbox on death certificates and also analyzes closely related fetal and infant mortality. OBJECTIVE: To describe trends in maternal, fetal, and infant deaths since 2000, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A national, population-level, epidemiological, cross-sectional analysis during 2000 to 2023 was conducted as well as a staggered difference-in-differen

Despite global strides, sub-Saharan Africa, including Ghana, grapples with persistent high child mortality. This study employs statistical methods to pinpoint factors driving under-five mortality in the Greater Accra Regional Hospital. METHODS: The data was acquired from Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ghana, spanning January to December 2020. The data comprised all under-five deaths recorded in the hosp

Adverse pregnancy outcomes and infant mortality after quadrivalent HPV vaccination during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have studied the association between unintended human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study set out to determine the association between HPV vaccination during pregnancy and subsequent risk of spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, and one-year infant mortality. METHODS: Population-based study including all pregnancies in Denmark (October 2006-December 2014) among women born 1975-1992. From nationwide health registries using the personal identification numbers, we obtained information on HPV vaccination, pregnancy outcomes, and infant m

METHODS: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional, observational study that included all 257,543 births in North Carolina in 2008-2009. Infant mortality was assessed based on birth records included in the database. Infant births and deaths were summarized by demographic and maternal/infant characteristics. Developing a statewide public health initiative to reduce infant mortality in Oklahoma.

The Preparing for a Lifetime, It's Everyone's Responsibility initiative was developed to improve the health and well- being of Oklahoma's mothers and infants. The development phase included systematic data collection, extensive data analysis, and multi-disciplinary partnership development. In total, seven issues (preconception/interconception health, tobacco use, postpartum depression, breastfeeding, infant safe sleep, preterm birth, and infant injury prevention) were identified as crucial to addressing infant mortality in Oklahoma. Workgroups were created to focus on each issue. Data and medi

The impact of air pollution on low birth weight and infant mortality.

This article discusses the impact of environmental factors on birth outcomes during the last two decades. It reiterates the correlation between air pollutants and adverse pregnancy including low birth weight (LBW) and infant mortality. Data sets are assembled for many OECD countries consisting of yearly air pollutants emissions including sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds. Various health data are illustrated to suggest that countries with high emission levels of air pollutants seemed to increase with LBW and infant mortality. This article reports
