Preprocedural mouthwashes for infection control in dentistry-an update.

OBJECTIVES: Aerosols and splatter are routinely generated in dental practice and can be contaminated by potentially harmful bacteria or viruses such as SARS-CoV-2. Therefore, preprocedural mouthwashes containing antiseptic agents have been proposed as a potential measure for infection control in dental practice. This review article aims to summarize the clinical (and, if insufficient, preclinical) evidence on preprocedural mouthwashes containing antiseptic agents and to draw conclusions for dental practitioners. METHODS: Literature on preprocedural mouthwashes for reduction of bacterial or vi

Pathogenesis, epidemiology and control of Group A Streptococcus infection.

Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus; GAS) is exquisitely adapted to the human host, resulting in asymptomatic infection, pharyngitis, pyoderma, scarlet fever or invasive diseases, with potential for triggering post-infection immune sequelae. GAS deploys a range of virulence determinants to allow colonization, dissemination within the host and transmission, disrupting both innate and adaptive immune responses to infection. Fluctuating global GAS epidemiology is characterized by the emergence of new GAS clones, often associated with the acquisition of new virulence or antimicrobial det

Candida auris PCR for high-throughput infection control screening.

UNLABELLED: Candida auris has significant implications for infection control due to its multidrug resistance and spread in healthcare settings. Current culture-based screening methods are laborious and risk muco-cutaneous colonisation of laboratory staff. We describe the adaptation of a published real-time PCR for the identification of C. auris in skin swabs for high-throughput infection control screening. Two published primer and probe sets were analysed utilising serial 10-fold dilutions of 15 C. auris strains to assess the PCR limit of detection. One primer and probe set was compatible with

Factors affecting infection control measures performed by dental workers.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: An understanding of self-protection related factors is important for dental infection control. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with personal self-protection in infection control among dental care workers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey with self-report questionnaire was conducted between Jan and Dec, 2018.275 dentists and 298 dental assistants were enrolled from randomly selected dental care settings. RESULTS: Compliance with wearing hair caps, facial masks, and hand washing is not as high as oral masks and gloves (over 90%). For dentis

Non-Antibiotics Strategies to Control Salmonella Infection in Poultry.

Salmonella spp. is a facultative intracellular pathogen causing localized or systemic infections, involving economic and public health significance, and remains the leading pathogen of food safety concern worldwide, with poultry being the primary transmission vector. Antibiotics have been the main strategy for Salmonella control for many years, which has allowed producers to improve the growth and health of food-producing animals. However, the utilization of antibiotics has been reconsidered since bacterial pathogens have established and shared a variety of antibiotic resistance mechanisms tha

A Flexible and Deadly Way to Control Salmonella Infection.

Although programmed cell death can control intracellular bacterial replication, the role of cell death during systemic Salmonella infection remained elusive. In this issue of Immunity, Doerflinger et al. discover a critical but overlapping role for cell death associated caspases during Salmonella infection.

[Implementation of effective infection control: furnishing a -dental practice].

The increasing resistance to antibiotics and the aging of the population of patients who visit the dental practice can lead to more frequent infections with (resistant) microorganisms. The prevention of cross contamination by the implementation of effective measures in the area of hygiene and procedures of infection control is therefore important. The furnishing of a dental practice can play an important part in prevention. What are the important issues in furnishing a practice? A distinction is made between 'critical' and 'non-critical' rooms. Patients are only treated and instruments are onl

Awareness of Infection Control among Dental Students and Interns.

INTRODUCTION: Disease transmission can occur through direct contact, blood, oral fluids, or other secretions and indirect contact with contaminated instruments, operatory equipment, or objects. Prevention of cross contamination helps in reducing the infection. The level of education of the students, and their knowledge about the infection control directly relates to the patient care. The current study aims to determine the level of knowledge and infection control procedures among dental students in a clihnical practice. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study with a self-administered questi

Overview of Zika infection, epidemiology, transmission and control measures.

The current Zika virus outbreak in the Americas and the proposed link to increases in microcephaly and neurological disorders have prompted the World Health Organization to declare a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on February 1, 2016. The virus is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and potentially by transfusion, perinatal and sexual transmission. The potential for spread into countries where Aedes mosquitoes are endemic is high. Previously, cases tended to be sporadic and associated with mild, non-specific symptoms. Prior outbreaks occurred in Yap Island in Micronesia in 2007,

Decolonization and decontamination: what's their role in infection control?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hospital-acquired infections cause up to 19% of infections in paediatric patients contributing to the spread of antimicrobial resistance. This review evaluates the effect of decolonization and decontamination in hospitalized children and neonates as an adjunct to standard infection control measures. RECENT FINDINGS: Few studies on decolonization and decontamination are available in children. The evidence about the effectiveness of daily chlorhexidine washcloths on bacteraemia in paediatric patients relies on a single randomized controlled trial, in neonates with central ven

Immune Control of Legionella Infection: An in vivo Perspective.

Legionella pneumophila is an intracellular pathogen that replicates within alveolar macrophages. Through its ability to activate multiple host innate immune components, L. pneumophila has emerged as a useful tool to dissect inflammatory signaling pathways in macrophages. However the resolution of L. pneumophila infection in the lung requires multiple cell types and abundant cross talk between immune cells. Few studies have examined the coordination of events that lead to effective immune control of the pathogen. Here we discuss L. pneumophila interactions with macrophages and dendritic cell su

Update on antibiotics for infection control in cystic fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis pulmonary disease is characterized by chronic and recurrent infection, airway inflammation, bronchiectasis and progressive obstructive lung physiology. Advances in the treatment of common airway pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa have led to a marked improvement in overall survival. However, antibiotic treatment options are often limited by multidrug resistance, potential toxicities and treatment burden to individual patients. While appropriate anti-infective therapy reduces bacterial density in the airways and may result in clinical improvement, true eradication of airwa

New technologies for the control of human hookworm infection.

Since the 1990s, the major approach to hookworm control has been morbidity reduction in school-aged children by periodic deworming with benzimidazoles. Now, efforts are underway to determine the feasibility of integrating deworming with control programs that target other neglected tropical diseases. However, the sustainability of benzimidazole deworming for hookworm is of concern because of the variable efficacy of mebendazole, high rates of post-treatment reinfection and possible development of drug resistance. This requires parallel efforts to develop new and complementary hookworm control t

West Nile virus: a primer for infection control professionals.

In 1999, an outbreak of human West Nile encephalitis occurred in New York City. During the outbreak, 62 cases of human West Nile virus (WNV) infection were diagnosed, with 7 deaths. This was the first time that human WNV infections were detected in the Western Hemisphere. By 2002, the total number of human cases of WNV that year alone reached 4156, with 284 fatalities. In addition, investigations have shown that WNV can be acquired through organ transplantation, blood transfusion, breast milk, transplacental transmission, and occupational exposure. This article provides an overview of the 2002

Effective control of infection-associated hemophagocytic syndrome with chloroquine.

A retrospective study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy and the side effects of chloroquine in the treatment of 27 patients with infection-associated hemophagocytic syndrome and compared these with patients described in the literature. All patients received 20 to 25 mg/kg chloroquine per day orally for 7 days (a single course). Twenty-one patients who received one or two courses of treatment showed excellent responses; two patients showed no response to treatment. Two other patients refused to receive treatment with chloroquine. The response rate was 85.2%. Side effects were minimal and

Role of LMP1 in immune control of EBV infection.

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) encoded latent membrane protein (LMP1) plays a crucial role in the long-term persistence of this virus within the cells of the immune system. Not only is this protein critical for the transformation of resting B cells by EBV, it also displays pleiotropic effects on various cellular proteins expressed in the host cell. These include up-regulation of expression of B cell activation antigens, adhesion molecules and various components of the antigen processing pathway. Here we discuss how LMP1 acts like an expression 'switch' which, depending on the stage of EBV infect

Vaccination to control an outbreak of Mycoplasma crocodyli infection.

Details of a severe outbreak of M. crocodyli infection in farmed crocodiles are reported. The outbreak was suspected to have been precipitated by translocation-related stress on the animals brought from a farm with a known history of M. crocodyli infection. Resorting to the use of an autogenous vaccine proved more effective in alleviating the disease manifestations than antibiotic therapy. Prospects of vaccination in the face of an outbreak are discussed.
