Babesiosis is the disease caused by infection of the erythrocytes of mammals by Babesia species, which are Apicomplexa protozoa belonging to the suborder Piroplasmidea and the family Babesiidae. They are different from the Theileriidae, which can also infect white blood cells and endothelial cells. Babesiosis is one of the most important tick-borne infectious diseases of domestic and wild mammals and still poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges for veterinary practitioners around the world. It is an increasing problem worldwide because of the expansion of tick habitats and the

Fungal surgical site infections (SSIs) may be less common than bacterial SSIs but are a significant clinical issue due to their challenging diagnosis, higher morbidity, and rising incidence, particularly in immunocompromised patients. The epidemiology, risk factors, prevalent fungal pathogens, and prevention of SSIs caused by fungi are discussed in this narrative review. Systematic literature search for the period 2000 to 2024 was conducted on top databases using relevant MeSH keywords. The most frequent solitary pathogens were Candida spp., followed by Aspergillus and Mucor spp., especially i

BACKGROUND: Nasal dermoid cysts are common tumors in children. Due to anomalies in embryologic development of the nasal complex, sometimes an intracranial extension exists. When these cysts become infected they can lead to meningitis, brain abscess and death.
METHODS: We report the case of a 1.5-year-old girl admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit after infection of a nasal dermoid cyst.
RESULTS: The infant had a spiking fever and epileptic seizures. She was stabilized, intubated and a CT scan showed a subcutaneous mass with an adjacent zone of encephalitis and brain abscess formatio

BACKGROUND: Patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) often report opportunistic infections such as herpes and urinary tract infections.
AIM: To compare opportunistic infections in patients with HS against a group of healthy controls (HCs).
METHODS: In total, 99 patients with HS and 109 HCs were recruited at random to this retrospective case-control study. We devised a questionnaire to explore the frequency of minor infections, general practitioner (GP) visits and sick days experienced during the past 6 months. Additionally, participants were asked if they felt unwell more often compared w

BACKGROUND: Preventing and managing zoonoses mandate the combined efforts of physicians, veterinarians, and environmental and social scientists. The systematic recording of zoonoses in humans is rarely carried out through dedicated surveillance systems, and there is a need to boost awareness among general practitioners about these diseases. Companion animals, especially dogs and cats which constitute a reservoir for zoonotic infective agents, are frequently present in Italian families. We therefore conducted an assessment of the burden of certain zoonoses in primary care settings in Italy.

Hand hygiene is a fundamental strategy for controlling the spread of infection. Careful hand drying is integral to the process of hand hygiene, which aims to optimise the removal of potentially pathogenic microorganisms. Ineffective hand drying results in wet hands that are an infection risk increasing the potential for cross-infection, occupational contact dermatitis for healthcare practitioners, harm to patients and environmental contamination. Evidence indicates that there has been limited research regarding the significance of hand drying and the efficacy and clinical impact of different d

This document updates and replaces CDC's previously published "Guideline for Prevention of Nosocomial Pneumonia" (Infect Control 1982;3:327-33, Respir Care 1983;28:221-32, and Am J Infect Control 1983;11:230-44). This revised guideline is designed to reduce the incidence of nosocomial pneumonia and is intended for use by personnel who are responsible for surveillance and control of infections in acute-care hospitals; the information may not be applicable in long-term-care facilities because of the unique characteristics of such settings. This revised guideline addresses common problems encount

Near patient testing (NPT) was the norm in days when urine was examined by smell and taste. More recently, general practitioners and physicians in genitourinary medicine began to use light microscopes in their consulting rooms to examine urine for pus cells and urethral and other swabs for pathogens. Increasing knowledge has led to specialisation, however, with clinicians obtaining specimens for examination by others. Improved technology has speeded up the practice of medicine, raising expectations of patients and doctors alike, and reductions in the size and expense of testing instruments hav

New studies suggest that Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia pneumoniae play a more significant role as causes of lower respiratory tract infections in childhood than was previously thought. In particular, the incidence of infections caused by these pathogens is high in children aged less than 5 years, the infections themselves seem to be a possible cause of wheezing, and may present a more complicated course when not treated with adequate antimicrobial agents. However, despite the increasing pathogenic significance of M. pneumoniae and C. pneumoniae, progress in fighting them is hampered by t

Mucormycosis is an angio-invasive, opportunistic fungal infection, which usually affects individuals with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus. While rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) has been described in the English language literature, odontogenic-onset mucormycosis (OOM) is an emerging clinical entity, which is characterized by a unique port of entry, a distinct mode of onset and clinic-radiological features. We report a series of five cases of OOM managed in a tertiary care centre in North India. This series underscores the critical need for heightened awareness among dental pract

BACKGROUND: Matings between male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected with wAlbB strain of Wolbachia and wildtype females yield non-viable eggs. We evaluated the efficacy of releasing wAlbB-infected Ae. aegypti male mosquitoes to suppress dengue.
METHODS: We specified the protocol of a two-arm cluster-randomized test-negative controlled trial (cRCT) and emulated it using a nationally representative test-negative/positive database of individuals reporting for febrile illness to any public hospital, general practitioner or polyclinic. We retrospectively built a cohort of individuals who reside in

General practitioners (GPs) play a dual role in influenza prevention and control as both medical decision-makers and a high-risk population for infection. This study, based on the Reasoned Action Approach (RAA), aimed to explore GPs' influenza vaccination willingness and its influencing factors. Data were collected via an online questionnaire from February 11 to March 20, 2025, using convenience sampling. The questionnaire covered general profiles, influenza vaccination in the last season, vaccination willingness, and a RAA-based scales (including dimensions of attitude, subjective norms, and

It goes without saying that the members of any professional group are more likely to modify their behavior if they are provided with logical, rational reasons to enact the suggested change. In the mid 1980s, health care providers, including dental personnel, were advised to adopt universal precautions and to alter their infection control habits with minimal justification, apart from the general unease and paranoia surrounding AIDS. Therefore, it is understandable that some practitioners would react with scepticism to the idea that their traditional infection control techniques were less than a

To evaluate the prevalence of antibodies to Chlamydophila psittaci 364 serum samples were collected from veterinarians, biologists, animal scientists, veterinary students, animal keepers and others employees in 20 zoos, and from veterinary practitioners in 10 Brazilian states. Subjects ranged from 15 to 64 years of age, with 268 (74%) males and 96 (26%) females. Chlamydial antibodies were determined by the complement fixation test (CFT) and specific anti-C. psittaci IgG antibodies were determined by the microimmunoflurescence (MIF) test. Complement fixation test showed 23.9% (87/364) and MIF t
