Characterization and antimicrobial activity of essential oils of industrial hemp varieties (Cannabis sativa L.).

The present study focused on inhibitory activity of freshly extracted essential oils from three legal (THC<0.2% w/v) hemp varieties (Carmagnola, Fibranova and Futura) on microbial growth. The effect of different sowing times on oil composition and biological activity was also evaluated. Essential oils were distilled and then characterized through the gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Thereafter, the oils were compared to standard reagents on a broad range inhibition of microbial growth via minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay. Microbial strains were divided i

Elymus chaobotryus (Poaceae), a new species from the north-eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China.

Elymus chaobotryus Y.C. Zhang, sp. nov. (Poaceae, Triticeae) from the north-eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (Tongren City, southeastern Qinghai, China) is described and illustrated based on detailed morphological comparisons and complete plastome data. The new species is readily distinguished from morphologically similar taxa by its pendulous compound spike 16-19 cm long, bearing 10-15 short lateral branches (2-4 cm) produced from nearly all nodes of the main rachis; the branches become progressively longer toward the base, giving the inflorescence a characteristic grape-like appearance. It fu

PtoeIF5A1: A Pleiotropic Regulator of Development, PCD, and Salt Tolerance in Populus tomentosa.

Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A (eIF5A) is a highly conserved protein family unique to eukaryotes, yet its functional characterization in woody plants remains limited. In this study, we identified four eIF5A genes (PtoeIF5A1-PtoeIF5A4) from the genome of Populus tomentosa, a fast-growing tree species indigenous to China, and characterized their expression patterns and functional roles through bioinformatics analysis, quantitative real-time PCR, stable overexpression in Arabidopsis thaliana, and transient expression in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves. Our results demonstrated that all

Plant Peptide Hormones: Three Decades of Discovery and Emerging Paradigms.

Plant peptide hormones have reshaped our understanding of intercellular signaling in plants. Once considered absent in plants, peptide-based signaling pathways emerged as key regulators of plant growth, development, environmental responses and immunity. A paradigm shift occurred with the discoveries of Systemin and Phytosulfokine (PSK) in the 1990s as well as the identifications of receptor-like kinases (RLKs) regulating important biological processes. Over the past three decades, a repertoire of peptide hormone families has been expanded enormously, with deeper understandings of peptide modif

Emergence of lignin-carbohydrate interactions during plant stem maturation visualized by solid-state NMR.

Lignification waterproofs and strengthens secondary plant cell walls but increases the energy cost of sugar release for biofuels. The physical association between lignin and the carbohydrate scaffold that accommodates lignin polymerization, along with the distinct roles of lignin units and carbohydrate partners during lignification, remain unclear. Here, we map lignin-carbohydrate spatial proximity by solid-state NMR in 13C-labeled Arabidopsis inflorescence stems during secondary cell wall formation. Analyses include wild-type plants and mutants that selectively or globally disrupt lignin bios

Setaria Comes of Age: Meeting Report on the Second International Setaria Genetics Conference.

Setaria viridis is an emerging model for cereal and bioenergy grasses because of its short stature, rapid life cycle and expanding genetic and genomic toolkits. Its close phylogenetic relationship with economically important crops such as maize and sorghum positions Setaria as an ideal model system for accelerating discovery and characterization of crop genes that control agronomically important traits. The Second International Setaria Genetics Conference was held on March 6-8, 2017 at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, St. Louis, MO, United States to discuss recent technological breakt

Senescence-induced expression of cytokinin reverses pistil abortion during maize flower development.

Maize is a monoecious species that produces imperfect (unisexual), highly derived flowers called florets. Within the spikelet, the basic repeating unit of the maize inflorescence, the spikelet meristem gives rise to an upper and a lower floret. Although initially bisexual, floret unisexuality is established through selective organ elimination. In addition, the lower floret of each ear spikelet is aborted early in its development, leaving the upper floret to mature as the only pistillate floret. Expression from the cytokinin-synthesizing isopentenyl transferase (IPT) enzyme under the control of

The mutagenicities of alkaloids and N-nitrosoguvacoline from betel quid.

In Taiwan, betel quid is a natural masticatory, which is composed of fresh green areca fruit, Piper betle and slaked lime paste. Areca fruit contains some alkaloids, of which arecoline is the major one. N-Nitrosoguvacoline (NG), one of the N-nitrosation products of arecoline, is the only one N-nitrosamine found in Taiwanese betel quid chewing saliva. The mutagenic studies in Ames Salmonella microsome test showed that crude alkaloid extracts of areca fruit and arecoline were active in Salmonella typhimurium TA100, and NG was weakly active in TA98 and TA100. The activities in both arecoline and

Metabolite Profiling of Annual Ryegrass Cultivars to Assess Disease Resistance and Susceptibility.

Direct immersion solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy was used to create chemical fingerprints of annual ryegrass cultivars (Lolium rigidum). Extracts made of the inflorescences of four cultivars and one accession of annual ryegrass were assessed to identify differential metabolites between those resistant to and susceptible to bacterial galls associated with annual ryegrass toxicity (ARGT). Numerous compounds were identified. Principal component analysis showed distinct clustering of metabolites from disease-resistant and disease-susceptible cultivars.

Enhanced Seed Viability Correlates with Husk Adhesion in Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.).

Understanding seed longevity in genebanks is fundamental for effective long-term conservation of plant genetic resources. Although storage environment, species biology, seed age, and oxygen exposure are known to influence viability, substantial variation in germination among accessions stored under identical conditions suggests the presence of additional genetic determinants. Here, we analysed 947 barley seed lots (686 hulled and 261 hulless) across nine harvest years (1975-2017) to assess the relationship between seed viability and a broad range of phenotypic traits, including plant phenology

A sucrose-jasmonic acid feedback loop drives stem cell senescence in Arabidopsis.

The lifespan of annual plants is tightly linked to stem cell senescence and the cessation of proliferative activity in the inflorescence meristem (IM). A "senescence factor" originating in developing fruits has long been proposed to trigger proliferative arrest in the IM. Here, we show that jasmonic acid (JA) accumulates in the aging IM, where the JA-responsive transcription factor MYC2 directly represses WUSCHEL (WUS) expression and cytokinin accumulation. We demonstrate that sucrose originating in the siliques triggers local JA biosynthesis in the IM and induces stem cell senescence and meri

Deciphering the biosynthesis pathway of gamma terpinene cuminaldehyde and para cymene in the fruit of Bunium persicum.

Persian cumin (Bunium persicum) is a widely used plant in Iranian cuisine, valued for its aromatic and therapeutic compounds, primarily monoterpenoids such as γ-terpinene, cuminaldehyde, and p-cymene. Many ambiguities surround the exact process by which monoterpenoids are synthesized in plants. This study investigates the key genes and biosynthetic pathways involved in monoterpenoid production during fruit development. To achieve this, RNA sequencing and GC-MS analysis were performed on two tissues (inflorescence and stem) to identify differentially expressed genes associated with volatile com

Reproductive biology of Trichocentrum pumilum: an orchid pollinated by oil-collecting bees.

The reproductive biology, reward production and pollination mechanism of Trichocentrum pumilum were studied in a gallery forest in the interior of the State of São Paulo, southeast Brazil. The floral visitors and pollination mechanism were recorded, and experimental pollinations were carried out in order to determine the breeding system of this species. Trichocentrum pumilum blooms in spring. Each paniculate inflorescence bears an average of 85 flowers that present a central yellow callus and finger-like trichomes on the lateral lobes of the lip. A lipoidal substance is produced and stored amo

Evaluation of mutagenic potential of contaminated atmosphere at Ibirapuera Park, São Paulo - SP, Brazil, using the Tradescantia stamen-hair assay.

Trad-SHM assay was used to check mutagenic potential of atmospheric contamination at Ibirapuera Park, located in São Paulo city, Brazil, and variation of risk along the year, besides determining which Tradescantia clone, BNL 4430 or KU-20, better indicates risk. Thirty pots of both clones were exposed during one-year period (September, 2002-August, 2003). Twenty inflorescences were taken from each clone twice a month in the morning, in order to estimate the frequency of mutations in stamen hairs. Results were compared to air pollution and climatic data measured next to the exposure site. KU-20

ZmTB1be1 Modulates Ear Branching via Releasing the Repression to ZmWOX3a in Maize.

The natural mutation of ZmTB1WT to ZmTB1be1 was documented as the fundamental cause of ear branching in maize, while the molecular mechanism remains undiscovered. In the present study, we characterized both ZmTB1WT and ZmTB1be1, and found that the structure of conserved domains, activation features, and subcellular localization of both proteins remained unchanged, whereas the mutation significantly decreased the transactivating power of ZmTB1WT to the documented downstream target genes. Further DAP-qPCR identified significant enrichment of ZmTB1be1 within the promoter of ZmWOX3a (pZmWOX3a), an

The molecular regulation of axillary bud fate determination and outgrowth into branch crown in strawberry involves BRC1.

In strawberry, the axillary bud (AXB) can produce either an elongated stem called stolon giving a daughter-plant (asexual reproduction) or an inflorescence-bearing branch crown (BC; sexual reproduction). The AXB fate depends on node position on the axis and on genetic and environmental factors. Here, in Fragaria vesca, we addressed the largely unanswered question of how molecular factors determine AXB fate. To get insights into the mechanisms already at play in a morphologically indistinguishable (undifferentiated) AXB, depending on its fate, we combined the phenotypic characterization of AXB
