A longitudinal study on engagement with dieting information as a predictor of dieting behavior among adults diagnosed with cancer.

OBJECTIVE: This study explores cancer survivors' engagement with information about dieting to control weight from doctors, interpersonal, and media sources and examines whether engagement from these sources impacts subsequent dieting behavior. METHODS: A total of 1128 respondents diagnosed with colorectal, breast, or prostate cancers were surveyed over three years following their cancer diagnoses. Using weighted logistic regression analyses, the authors predicted the odds of dieting based on earlier information engagement with sources, controlling for dieting in the previous year and confound

Health-Seeking Behavior for Erectile Dysfunction in Methadone Maintenance Treatment Patients.

Background: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is commonly associated with methadone usage. However, little data is known regarding the health-seeking behavior for ED in the methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) population. This study aimed to determine the health-seeking behavior of MMT patients with ED who perceived themselves as having ED. We aimed to assess the attitudes and health-seeking behavior, the effectiveness of the treatment and the factors associated with treatment-seeking behavior. Methods: This was an observational questionnaire-based study. Patients were first screened for ED (n = 154)

Data-driven analyses to quantify information seeking behaviour for women with uterine fibroids.

Uterine fibroids (UF) are noncancerous growths of the uterus and impact the livelihood of over 26 million women in the United States. Although UF may not have accompanying symptoms, for some women their presence leads to surgical treatment, which can be a difficult decision-making process. Web-scraping of online media is used to identify information-seeking behavior of women searching for UF treatment options. We synthesize the data to describe trends in UF treatment, including the identification of gaps between the information individuals are seeking (demand) and information that is publicly

Health Information as "Fodder for Fears": A Qualitative Analysis of Types and Determinants of the Nonuse of Health Information.

As not all individuals are willing to pay attention to health information it is crucial to understand and distinguish the underlying motives and the scope of various nonuse behaviors. To increase conceptual clarity and specify theoretical assumptions about the types of nonuse of health information and their determinants, we used a qualitative research approach. Semi-structured interviews with 11 female, 10 male, and 10 non-binary participants aged between 18 and 67 (M = 39.7) showed that information ignoring and avoidance are two distinct behaviors characterized by their motivational patterns.

An Evaluation of the Usage of Internet Resources by Patients with Lung Cancer.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer mortality. Meanwhile, the Internet remains a remarkably popular source of health information. This study characterizes how patients with lung cancer utilize online resources including social media and examines how this online health information-seeking behaviour (HISB) influences their healthcare journeys. From September 2022 to August 2023, a survey of 38 open- and close-ended questions was distributed to patients with lung cancer at a tertiary cancer centre. Quantitative data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, and qualitative data was ev

Analyzing Online Search Trends for Kidney, Prostate, and Bladder Cancers in China: Infodemiology Study Using Baidu Search Data (2011-2023).

BACKGROUND: Cancers of the bladder, kidney, and prostate are the 3 major genitourinary cancers that significantly contribute to the global burden of disease (GBD) and continue to show increasing rates of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In mainland China, understanding the cancer burden on patients and their families is crucial; however, public awareness and concerns about these cancers, particularly from the patient's perspective, remain predominantly focused on financial costs. A more comprehensive exploration of their needs and concerns has yet to be fully addressed. OBJECTIVE: This stud

Trending ticks: using Google Trends data to understand tickborne disease prevention.

INTRODUCTION: Ticks and pathogens they carry seriously impact human and animal health, with some diseases like Lyme and Alpha-gal syndrome posing risks. Searching for health information online can change people's health and preventive behaviors, allowing them to face the tick risks. This study aimed to predict the potential risks of tickborne diseases by examining individuals' online search behavior. METHODS: By scrutinizing the search trends across various geographical areas and timeframes within the United States, we determined outdoor activities associated with potential risks of tick-rela

Monitoring HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis information seeking by combining digital and traditional data.

BACKGROUND: Public health is increasingly turning to non-traditional digital data to inform HIV prevention and control strategies. We demonstrate a parsimonious method using both traditional survey and internet search histories to provide new insights into HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) information seeking that can be easily extended to other settings. METHOD: We modeled how US internet search volumes from 2019 for HIV testing and PrEP compared against expected search volumes for HIV testing and PrEP using state HIV prevalence and socioeconomic characteristics as predictors.

Informational needs in vulvar cancer and precursor conditions: a social listening study.

PURPOSE: Vulvar cancer and precursor conditions including vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) impose substantial burden, yet patient information provision remains poorly evidenced. Stigma and taboo contribute to diagnostic delays of 6-11 months. This study used social listening to map the online information-seeking landscape of women with vulvar cancer and VIN, with the aim of informing phase-integrated supportive care strategies. METHODS: Questions were collected from six publicly accessible online platforms in the Netherlands, the UK, and the US (November 2025-January 2026), encompassing

Back pain, ankylosing spondylitis and social media usage; a descriptive analysis of current activity.

Social media usage by back pain patients is a new and developing area. Analysing patterns of this online activity offers a new way to understand our patients' concerns and behaviour around disease. Large volume data can be evaluated on a scale not feasible through alternative methods. A cross sectional review of specific terms relating to 'back pain' (BP) and 'ankylosing spondylitis' (AS) were tracked internationally on popular websites, blogs and boards over two 3 month periods, in 2016 and 2019. Relevant co-terms were also tracked in these discussions, such as 'exercise', 'medication' and 'd

Information is in the eye of the beholder: Seeking information on the MMR vaccine through an Internet search engine.

Vaccination campaigns are one of the most important and successful public health programs ever undertaken. People who want to learn about vaccines in order to make an informed decision on whether to vaccinate are faced with a wealth of information on the Internet, both for and against vaccinations. In this paper we develop an automated way to score Internet search queries and web pages as to the likelihood that a person making these queries or reading those pages would decide to vaccinate. We apply this method to data from a major Internet search engine, while people seek information about the

Breastfeeding Infants with Ankyloglossia: Insight into Mothers' Experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Breastfeeding difficulty from ankyloglossia can affect both the mother and baby in a breastfeeding dyad. With renewed emphasis in today's culture on breast milk, mothers may feel increasing pressure to breastfeed, and the inability for some to do so may cause significant distress. Recently, online parenting forums have seen exponential growth; these forums allow mothers to connect with peers undergoing similar life transitions. The purpose of this study was to review online discussions regarding ankyloglossia to understand mothers' experiences with breastfeeding. MATERIALS AND M
