Bringing a WEB-based interface to a hospital information system.

The Hospital Information System at the MU Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is a "home-grown" system written in MUMPS. The system has a "roll-and-scroll" user interface typical of terminal based systems from the 1970s and early 1980s. We are now introducing a new user interface that uses World Wide Web technology (HTML forms). Computers connected to the hospital's intranet can access the hospital system using the Web browser of the user's choice. The new user interface can run in parallel with the older interface (even on the same computer), and uses the same underlying database. This allow

Best Practice Guidelines for Use of Reference Points in Radiation Oncology Information Systems to Aggregate Longitudinal Dosimetric Data.

PURPOSE: Tracking patient doses in radiation oncology is challenging because of disparate electronic systems from various vendors. Treatment planning systems (TPS), radiation oncology information systems (ROIS), and electronic health records (EHR) lack uniformity, complicating dose tracking and reporting. To address this, we examined practices in multiple radiation oncology settings and proposed guidelines for current systems. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A survey was conducted among members of various professional groups to understand dose reporting practices in TPS, ROIS, and EHR systems. The aim

Improving health information systems during an emergency: lessons and recommendations from an Ebola treatment centre in Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: The 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola epidemic highlighted the difficulty of collecting patient information during emergencies, especially in highly infectious environments. Health information systems (HISs) appropriate for such settings were lacking prior to this outbreak. Here we describe our development and implementation of paper and electronic HISs at the Sierra Leone Kerry Town Ebola treatment centre (ETC) from 2014 to 2015. We share our approach, experiences, and recommendations for future health emergencies. METHODS: We developed eight fact-finding questions about data-related n

Critical issues in the development of health information systems in supporting environmental health: a case study of ciguatera.

BACKGROUND: Emerging environmental pressures resulting from climate change and globalization challenge the capacity of health information systems (HIS) in the Pacific to inform future policy and public health interventions. Ciguatera, a globally common marine food-borne illness, is used here to illustrate specific HIS challenges in the Pacific and how these might be overcome proactively to meet the changing surveillance needs resulting from environmental change. OBJECTIVES: We review and highlight inefficiencies in the reactive nature of existing HIS in the Pacific to collect, collate, and co

Towards an atlas of human helminth infection in sub-Saharan Africa: the use of geographical information systems (GIS).

The value of a geographical perspective to infectious disease epidemiology and control has long been recognized. However, the labour required to produce maps, and keep them up to date, has inhibited the development of this area, and very little is currently known about the spatial distribution of parasitic infections other than malaria, trypanosomiasis and onchocerciasis. A recent initiative by an international group of collaborators is attempting to redress the absence of detailed spatial information on the major helminth infections of humans. In this article, Simon Brooker and colleagues des

The potential of geographical information systems and remote sensing in the epidemiology and control of human helminth infections.

Geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies are being used increasingly to study the spatial and temporal patterns of infectious diseases. For helminth infections, however, such applications have only recently begun despite the recognition that infection distribution patterns in endemic areas may have profound effects on parasite population dynamics and therefore the design and implementation of successful control programmes. Here, we review the early applications of these technologies to the major human helminths (geohelminths, schistosomes and the major lymphati

Consideration of social and environmental determinants of maternal and perinatal health in the geographic information systems era: a primer.

Social and environmental exposures influence health outcomes across the lifespan, including during the perinatal period. Negative exposures such as neighborhood deprivation, air pollution, and violence, as well as positive exposures such as greenspace, neighborhood cohesion, and walkability, interact to affect many complex health outcomes. Understanding the impact of neighborhood environmental exposures on health is required to design effective interventions to improve health impacts of the places shaping people's daily lives. In the era of geographic information systems (GIS), analyses deline

Concordance of rapid diagnostic test results between health facility registers and health management information systems: a multi-country evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Accurate routine surveillance data are essential for malaria control and elimination. However, the multistep reporting process used in most malaria-affected countries can introduce discrepancies between health facility registers and national health management information systems, often based on the District Health Information System 2 (DHIS2). This study assessed the concordance of malaria rapid diagnostic test (RDT) data across facility registers, monthly summary forms (MSFs) and the DHIS2 in four sub-Saharan countries. METHODS: In 2023, we conducted an observational study in Ben

Perioperative Temperature Measurement Considerations Relevant to Reporting Requirements for National Quality Programs Using Data From Anesthesia Information Management Systems.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative hypothermia may increase the incidences of wound infection, blood loss, transfusion, and cardiac morbidity. US national quality programs for perioperative normothermia specify the presence of at least 1 "body temperature" ≥35.5°C during the interval from 30 minutes before to 15 minutes after the anesthesia end time. Using data from 4 academic hospitals, we evaluated timing and measurement considerations relevant to the current requirements to guide hospitals wishing to report perioperative temperature measures using electronic data sources. METHODS: Anesthesia inform

A systematic review of near real-time and point-of-care clinical decision support in anesthesia information management systems.

Anesthesia information management systems (AIMS) are sophisticated hardware and software technology solutions that can provide electronic feedback to anesthesia providers. This feedback can be tailored to provide clinical decision support (CDS) to aid clinicians with patient care processes, documentation compliance, and resource utilization. We conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed articles on near real-time and point-of-care CDS within AIMS using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols. Studies were identified by searches of the electronic data

Reduced functional integration and segregation of distributed neural systems underlying social and emotional information processing in autism spectrum disorders.

A growing body of evidence suggests that autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are related to altered communication between brain regions. Here, we present findings showing that ASD is characterized by a pattern of reduced functional integration as well as reduced segregation of large-scale brain networks. Twenty-three children with ASD and 25 typically developing matched controls underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while passively viewing emotional face expressions. We examined whole-brain functional connectivity of two brain structures previously implicated in emotional face processin

Modeling the distribution of Schistosoma mansoni and host snails in Uganda using satellite sensor data and Geographical Information Systems.

The potential value of MODIS satellite sensor data on Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and land surface temperatures (LST) for describing the distribution of the Schistosoma mansoni-"Biomphalaria pfeifferi"/Biomphalaria sudanica parasite-snail system in inland Uganda, were tested by developing annual and seasonal composite models, and iteratively analysing for their relationship with parasite and snail distribution. The dry season composite model predicted an endemic area that produced the best fit with the distribution of schools with > or =5% prevalence. NDVI values of 151-174,

Geographical Information Systems in parasitology: a review of potential applications using the example of animal trypanosomosis in West Africa.

The epidemiology of vector-borne diseases is complex due to the variability in the ecology of the different actors involved, i.e. hosts, parasites and vectors. The transmission of African animal trypanosomosis in the West-African savannah region is an excellent example of this complexity: riverine tsetse flies have an heterogeneous distribution along the rivers, depending of suitable habitats, and transmit pathogenic trypanosomes were they use domestic animal as feeding hosts. Contrasting epidemiological situations may thus occur at the local scale, and a broad view of the overall environment
