BACKGROUND: Obtaining viable informed consent from stroke patients for participation in clinical trials of acute stroke therapies is often problematic because of patients' neurological deficits. Furthermore, obtaining permission from surrogates is often not possible or not legally permissible.
SUMMARY OF REVIEW: In 1996 the Food and Drug Administration and Department of Health and Human Services published regulations that allow investigators to conduct emergency research without patient consent under a narrowly defined set of circumstances. We review requirements of these regulations, paying

BACKGROUND: Informed consent for living kidney donation is paramount, as donors are healthy individuals undergoing surgery for the benefit of others. The informed consent process for living kidney donors is heterogenous, and the question concerns how well they are actually informed. Knowledge assessments, before and after donor education, can form the basis for a standardized informed consent procedure for live kidney donation.
METHODS: In this prospective, a multicenter national cohort study conducted in all eight kidney transplant centers in The Netherlands, we assessed the current status o

Access to communication and information during the informed consent process for clinical research is essential for empowered decision-making. To build awareness of accessibility practices, this study aimed to explore current enablers and barriers experienced by potential research participants during informed consent procedures. A multimodal survey, capturing quantitative and qualitative data, was distributed through industry networks in Australia. The survey was open to people who had been involved in an informed consent process for a clinical research study. We collected survey data from Augu

PURPOSE: Informed consent in medical care is supposed to guarantee patient autonomy. However, in practice, written consent is often inadequate for this purpose: In an effort to meet legal requirements, consent forms are often comprehensive and complex. They cover all information that could potentially be relevant, possibly overwhelming patients rather than addressing their concerns. Thus, there is an urgent need for more patient-centered consent forms. As a first step toward this goal, this study assessed the importance of various aspects of consent to genetic testing from the patients' perspe

Obtaining informed consent has typically become a stylized ritual of presenting and signing a form, in which physicians are acting defensively and patients lack control over the content and flow of information. This leaves patients at risk both for being under-informed relative to their decisional needs and of receiving more information than they need or desire. By personalizing the process of seeking and receiving information and allowing patients to specify their desire for information in a prospective manner, we aim to shift genuine control over the informational process to patients. A new

BACKGROUND: The purpose of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of using a videotape to give patients information about the risks, benefits, alternatives, and treatment of a common orthopaedic procedure before they sign consent forms.
METHODS: During a 9-month period, 48 patients with isolated closed ankle fractures requiring surgical intervention were randomized into two groups that received either videotaped or conventional verbal information regarding consent for surgery. The study group watched a videotape containing information about the risks, benefits, and treatment alternatives

Mrs Pearce was expecting her sixth child. The expected date of delivery was 13 November 1991. On 27 November when she saw the consultant the baby had still not arrived. She begged the doctor to induce her or to carry out a caesarean. He preferred to let nature take its course, and explained to her the risks of induction and a caesarean section. The baby died in utero sometime between 2 and 3 December. The delivery of a stillborn baby was induced on 4 December. She brought an action alleging that the consultant should have advised her of the increased risk of stillbirth as a result of the delay

BACKGROUND: The use of lengthy, detailed, and complex informed consent forms (ICFs) is of paramount concern in biomedical research as it may not truly promote the rights and interests of research participants. The extent of information in ICFs has been the subject of debates for decades; however, no clear guidance is given. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the perspectives of research participants about the type and extent of information they need when they are invited to participate in biomedical research.

UNLABELLED: Obtaining informed consent is crucial in clinical research. This process is particularly challenging in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Parents of critically ill neonates already experience high emotional distress, and soliciting consent for research may exacerbate this burden. As evidence-based medicine is essential to improve neonatal care, clinical trials in neonates require adequate and non-selective enrollment. This study aims to find facilitators and barriers influencing the consent process in neonatal research. A scoping review was conducted using PubMed, Embase, Web of Scie

BACKGROUND: Endoscopy unit efficiency is critical to provide timely and quality care, despite limited resources. In previous work, obtaining informed consent was the most common documented cause of delay. We developed a 4-minute animated video to facilitate the consent process, describing colonoscopy, its purpose, and potential risks and benefits.
AIMS: In this study, we aim to assess (1) the ability of the video to support the informed consent process and (2) the extent to which the video is attractive, clear, acceptable, actionable and usable, from the perspective of the audience.

Informed consent is both a foundational principle of research ethics and a human right grounded in self-determination and bodily integrity. During the COVID-19 pandemic, legislative attempts were made in South Korea to bypass informed consent and ethics review requirements for research involving patients with infectious diseases. Framed as emergency measures to accelerate biomedical innovation, the proposals sparked resistance from a broad coalition of civil society actors, including human rights advocates, patient organizations, labor unions, medical professionals, and bioethics scholars. Informed consent is fundamental to ethical research involving human participants; however, little is known about the public's understanding of research participants' rights in Myanmar. This multicenter cross-sectional study examined patients' perceptions of medical research, attitudes toward information disclosure during the informed consent process, and recognition of participants' rights using a structured, self-administered questionnaire completed by 284 adult patients from three hospitals. Most respondents viewed medical research positively but demonstrated varying levels of trust and unde

BACKGROUND: The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into clinical research challenges traditional informed consent (IC) frameworks due to the algorithmic complexity, opacity, and adaptive nature of AI systems. Although public demand for transparency regarding AI use in health care is high, current ethical guidelines lack specificity, and there has been no assessment of AI representation in IC documentation within clinical trial registries.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, clarity, and completeness of AI-related consent disclosures in clinical trials registered o

OBJECTIVES: Randomised trials for the management of drug-resistant infections are challenging to conduct as target patient populations often lack decision-making capacity, and enrolment windows are typically short. Improving informed consent and risk communication in these trials is especially crucial for protecting patient interests and maximising trial efficiency. This study aimed to understand challenges in risk communication and informed consent in antimicrobial clinical trials.
DESIGN: Scoping review.

This autoethnography describes an illness episode caused by breastfeeding complications. It focuses on informed consent processes accompanying this illness episode. Informed consent is a cornerstone of ethical medical practice and has to be obtained before a medical intervention can legally be implemented. It is therefore not trivial that in practice, informed consent processes often fail to achieve what they are set out to. With this autoethnography, I want to provide a review of how informed consent processes can fail in the context of breastfeeding, but also draw attention to what these sit

BACKGROUND: Medical student involvement in procedures, including pelvic exams under anesthesia (EUAs), is a fundamental part of medical education. While guidelines exist regarding informed consent for medical student participation, there is ongoing debate and uncertainty regarding the requirement and modality of obtaining explicit consent for pelvic EUAs. This study aims to explore the perceptions and experiences of medical students who do not favor an explicit informed consent process for pelvic EUAs.
METHODS: An anonymous online questionnaire was distributed to third- and fourth-year medica

Background: Currently, many initiatives are devoted to optimizing informed consent for participation in clinical research. Due to the digital transformation in health care, a shift toward electronic informed consent (eIC) has been fostered. However, empirical evidence on how to implement eIC in clinical research involving neonates is lacking. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 31 health care professionals active in Belgium or the Netherlands. All health care professionals had experience in conducting clinical research involving neonates. Interviews were audio-recorded, tra

OBJECTIVE: To explore the attitudes, beliefs, and interpretations of individual state Medicaid office employees regarding their state's postpartum sterilization policy and its impact on patient care.
STUDY DESIGN: We invited employees in all 50 state Medicaid director's offices who self- or peer-identified as best informed about the sterilization policy to participate in semi-structured qualitative interviews. Using a pilot-tested interview guide, we transcribed, coded, and analyzed each interview. We attempted to obtain supplemental data, including relevant policy details and instructions fo

BACKGROUND: Inherent to clinical research is the informed consent process, with the informed consent form (ICF), a key component of human participant protections. We wished to examine whether a shortened and simplified ICF, accompanied by an appendix, improved participant understanding of a study compared with a conventional ICF.
METHODS: A shortened ICF was developed from an existing conventional ICF for a neonatal study. Either the shortened or conventional ICF was randomly distributed to members of two parental advocacy groups. Participants answered survey questions about the form they rec
