BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of the intertriginous areas. HS affects hair follicles causing perifollicular inflammation, resulting in the formation of nodules and painful abscesses. Intense pulsed light (IPL) uses selective photothermolysis to destroy the hair follicles.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of IPL hair removal as treatment for mild-to-moderate HS.
MATERIALS & METHODS: We conducted a single-blinded, clinical randomized trial with patients with Hurley Stage I-II. Patients with symmetrical disease were randomized to monthly unil

BACKGROUND: High-fluence diode lasers with contact cooling have emerged as the gold standard to remove unwanted hair. Lowering the energy should result in less pain and could theoretically affect the efficacy of the therapy.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the safety and efficacy of a low fluence high repetition rate 810-nm diode laser to those of a high fluence, low repetition rate diode laser for permanent axillary hair removal in Chinese women.
METHODS: Ninety-two Chinese women received four axillae laser hair removal treatments at 4-week intervals using the low fluence, high repetition rate 810-nm

Acne is a common disorder affecting the pilosebaceous unit. Despite many advances in the treatments of acne vulgaris the best option is still controversial as the pathogenesis of acne is rather complex, necessitating various combination therapies. The objective of this study is to compare the clinical efficacy of intense pulsed light therapy (IPL) versus benzoyl peroxide 5% for the treatment of inflammatory acne. Fifty patients of both sexes, (15 males and 35 females) aged (18-27 years), with mild-to-severe acne and Fitzpatrick skin phototype IV were enrolled in this study. The patients were e

Melasma is a recalcitrant pigmentary disease with a complex pathogenesis. Monotherapy often results in unsatisfactory results with high recurrence rate. In this review article, we evaluate efficacy of energy-based devices combination therapy for melasma. We reviewed published literature since 2010 up to November 2020 regarding adjuvant therapy of energy-based devices with other treatment modalities in the treatment of melasma. After final selection, we assessed 49 articles. Energy-based devices include lasers, non-coherent lights, radiofrequency, iontophoresis, sonophoresis, microneedling, and

We undertook a Cochrane review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effects of light-based interventions for acne vulgaris. We searched the Cochrane Skin Specialised Register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, LILACS, ISI Web of Science and grey literature sources (September 2015). We used the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation Working Group approach to assess the quality of evidence (QoE). We included 71 RCTs (4211 participants, median sample size 31). Results from a single study (n = 266, low QoE) showed little or no difference in effectiveness on part

There is a clear association between dry eye disease (DED) and skin inflammatory diseases occurring in close proximity to the eyelids, such as facial skin rosacea. Intense pulsed light (IPL) is widely accepted as a treatment for skin rosacea. A number of recent studies demonstrated that, in patients suffering from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), IPL therapy also reduces signs and symptoms of DED. Despite these encouraging results, in the context of DED and MGD, the mechanisms of action of IPL are not well understood. The purpose of this review was to raise the potential mechanisms of action

Facial resurfacing procedures are becoming increasingly popular. The percentage of non-Caucasian individuals seeking these treatments continues to rise. Patients with darker skin types (Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI) face unique challenges for successful facial skin resurfacing. Common issues encountered by non-Caucasian patients include dyschromias, acne scars, photoaging, keloid and hypertrophic scars, benign cutaneous tumors, and hair-related disorders. This article discusses the most frequently used lasers and chemical peels used to address these problems.

Rosacea is a common and chronic inflammatory cutaneous disease with unknown etiology. The pathophysiology of rosacea is still poorly understood. Epidemiological studies indicate a genetic component, but a rosacea gene has not been detected yet. Recent molecular studies propose that an altered innate immune response is involved in the pathogenesis of the rosacea disease. Signs of rosacea are indicated by the presence of characteristic facial or ocular inflammation involving both the vascular and tissue stroma. A wide range of drug options is available for the treatment of rosacea, including sev

Psoriasis is an autoimmune inflammatory skin disease. In the past several decades, phototherapy has been widely used to treat stable psoriatic lesions, including trunk, scalp, arms and legs, and partial nail psoriasis. A variety of light/lasers with different mechanisms of action have been developed for psoriasis including ultraviolet B (UVB), psoralen ultraviolet A (PUVA), pulsed dye laser (PDL), photodynamic therapy (PDT), intense pulsed light (IPL), light-emitting diodes (LED), and so on. Because light/laser each has specific therapeutic and adverse effects, it is important to adequately ch

Light-based therapies are one of the most effective and widely used strategies for removal of undesired hair, with a broadly favourable safety profile. However, subjects with pigmented skin are found to be more prone to laser-related adverse events. While prolonged pulse-width and longer treatment duration were proposed to minimize adverse events, the optimal treatment option among available phototherapy modalities - long-pulsed (Nd:YAG), pulsed diode and alexandrite lasers as well as intense pulsed light (IPL) - remains unclear, particularly for skin of colour. To determine superiority in ter

BACKGROUND: Acne scarring can be classified into atrophic icepick, boxcar, and rolling scars in addition to keloidal and hypertrophic scars. Additionally, these scars can be erythematous, hyperpigmented, and/or hypopigmented. Each scar type has a different structural cause warranting a customized approach. Many cosmetic options exist to address these changes individually, but little literature exists about the safety and efficacy of combining such procedures and devices.
METHODS: A Medline search was performed on combination treatments because it relates to facial acne scarring, and results a

Dry eye disease (DED) is an increasingly common condition and one of the most common complaints of patients. The vast majority of DED is caused by the so-called "evaporative" subtype, that is mainly caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Intense pulsed light (IPL) devices employ high intensity pulses of polychromatic lights with a broad range of wavelength (515-1200 nm). IPL treatment has been utilized for years in the field of dermatology, and then its use was applied to ophthalmology for the treatment of MGD. Recently, a new device employing IPL was specifically designed for the perioc

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic calcinosis cutis is an uncommon form of calcinosis cutis. It may present as tumoral calcinosis, subepidermal calcified nodules or scrotal calcinosis. Subepidermal calcified nodules may also present as milia-like lesions commonly seen in children with Down's syndrome in the absence of tissue damage or metabolic disorders, it has been seldom reported in adults. The treatment of choice is surgical excision. However, a surgical approach may not always be beneficial to the patient given the cosmetic outcomes. Here, we describe the successful use of a CO2 laser in the treatmen

Introduction: Hypertrophic scars are abnormal scars that are a source of great functional, psychological and financial burden to the patient. Currently available treatment modalities are either very cumbersome to use or have not provided very satisfactory results. Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy for the management of hypertrophic scars has been recently introduced. However, most of the studies available are from the Western population. In this trial, we aim to study the effect of IPL on the South Indian population with darker skin and compare it with an existing treatment modality (silicone

Background: Rhodamine-intense pulsed light (r-IPL) is a noncoherent, noncollimated, polychromatic light energy optimized for a double-peak wavelength emission, ranging between 550-680 and 850-1200 nm. Traditional IPL works within visible and infrared spectra, targeting hemoglobin and melanin, are effective to treat rosacea and pigmentary disorders. r-IPL, a new technology in dermatology, emits high-intensity light with a wavelength peak similar to the one of the pulsed dye lasers, showing a good safety and efficacy profile in nonablative photorejuvenation. Objective: Assess efficacy and safety
