The Surgical Treatment of Robin Sequence: Neonatal Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis in the Unfavorable Patient.

INTRODUCTION: Neonates with severe Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) can be treated by mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO), tongue-lip adhesion, or tracheostomy; however, there is an active debate regarding the indications of MDO in this patient population. Published algorithms identify tracheomalacia, bronchomalacia, laryngomalacia, hypotonic syndromes, and central sleep apnea as contraindications for MDO and indications for tracheostomy, but these comorbidities may exist along a spectrum of severity. The authors propose that appropriately selected neonates with PRS who concurrently express 1

Repeat transcatheter aortic valve implantation using a latest generation balloon-expandable device for treatment of failing transcatheter heart valves.

BACKGROUND: Paravalvular leakage (PVL) is a known complication of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and is associated with poor outcome. Besides balloon-post-dilatation, valve-in-valve (ViV) procedures can be taken into consideration to control this complication. Herein we present initial experience with use of the latest generation balloon-expandable Edwards Sapien 3® (S3) transcatheter heart valve (THV) for treatment of failing THVs. METHODS: Between 01/2014 and 12/2014 three patients (two male, age: 71-80 y, log EUROScore I: 11.89 - 32.63) with failing THVs were refered to our

Experience with fully covered self-expandable metal stents for anastomotic stricture following esophageal atresia repair.

There is a lack of experience with fully covered self-expandable metal stents (SEMSs) for the treatment of benign esophageal conditions in the pediatric population. This is the evaluation of our institutional experience of placing SEMSs for anastomotic stricture (AS) formation following esophageal atresia (EA) repair. Patients were jointly managed from the Department of Pediatric Surgery and Central Interdisciplinary Endoscopy at our institution. Thirteen children (8 male, 5 female) with a median age of 4 months (range: 1-32 months) who underwent treatment with SEMSs for a postoperative AS fol

The need for routine adrenalectomy during surgical treatment for renal cell cancer: the Hannover experience.

INTRODUCTION: Poverty, limited access to resources and a lack of infrastructure characterise the division of rural areas from urban South Africa. Low numbers of social welfare professionals compound the problem. With education linked inextricably in social responsibility, higher education institutions (HEIs) are called upon increasingly to create conditions that encourage students and graduates to practise in more socially responsible ways, involving more than mere disciplinary expertise or technical knowledge, and that consider the problems of rural areas. Use of interprofessional education (

Mirror Distal Anterior Cerebral Artery Aneurysms in a Patient with Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Mirror distal anterior cerebral artery aneurysms (DACAAs) are a rare finding in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage, with only a few cases reported. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 40-year-old man was admitted for sudden-onset headache, nausea and vomiting, and transient right arm hypoesthesia. Computed tomography scan showed a subarachnoid hemorrhage with intracerebral hemorrhage within the interhemispheric fissure, but computed tomography angiography failed to identify any aneurysms. Subsequent digital subtraction angiography with three-dimensional reconstructions revealed 1.5-mm-diameter

Complex complications following ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement in Syria: A case report on multiple bowel perforations, migration, and obstruction.

INTRODUCTION: In patients with hydrocephalus, the most effective technique since the early 1900s is through the implantation of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS). VPS can cause abdominal issues such as infection, bowel obstruction due to adhesions, or viscus perforation. In our patient, the combination of infection, bowel obstruction, multiple intestinal perforations, and anal migration of the shunt creates a unique blend of complications that may be caused by VPS. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old girl with a history of ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement presented with symptoms of bowel ob

Finite element simulation of the human mandible: the role of (natural) teeth.

INTRODUCTION: Individual bone quality depends on genetic, biological, and mechanical influencing factors, where the latter is accessible via Finite Element Simulation. This work is part of an interdisciplinary research project with the purpose of stepwise refinement towards anatomical reality. This approach opened the door for many interrelated applications such as atrophy of the jaw bone, periodontology, implantology, or TMJ disorders. This lecture is dedicated to the influence of dental anatomy on mandibular biomechanics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In general, biomechanical simulation requires

A Quasi-Experimental Study of an Online Communication Partner Training Program for Orthoptic Students.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Current clinical practice guidelines recommend communication partner training (CPT) for healthcare professionals to maximise effective communication when providing care to clients with an acquired brain injury (ABI) from stroke and traumatic brain injury. Orthoptists are eye care professionals who work with people with ABI who often have concurrent communication and visual impairments. However, CPT studies often do not include orthoptists, and training programs seldom explicitly address the intersection of vision and challenges to common supportive communication strategies

Complication Rates of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters in Oncologic Versus Non-Oncologic Patients.

OBJECTIVES: Peripherally inserted central catheters are commonly used in cancer patients and provide vascular access for the administration of chemotherapy, antibiotics, or parenteral nutrition. Besides many advantages, they represent a source of possible complications such as catheter related blood stream infection, catheter occlusion, or thrombosis. In this study, the catheter-related complication rate between oncologic and non-oncologic patients was compared. METHODS: This retrospective cohort-study included 411 patients who underwent their first catheter placement at the Vienna General Ho
