Panic-Focused Reflective Functioning and Comorbid Borderline Traits as Predictors of Change in Quality of Object Relations in Panic Disorder Treatments.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether (a) baseline levels of panic-specific reflection function (PSRF; i.e. patients' capacity to reflect on their panic symptoms) and improvement in this capacity over treatment; (b) baseline borderline personality disorder (BPD) traits and pre-post treatment improvement in BPD traits predict change in patients' quality of object relations. METHOD: A subsample of 102 patients diagnosed with panic disorder from a larger randomized controlled trial received either Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy or Panic-Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. We investigated whether base

Working with Mind-Body-Brain in a Dyadic Treatment Through Embodied Witnessing to Heal Trauma of Human Origin.

Over the course of the 20th and 21st centuries the Freudian intrapsychic and drive-based view of development of the human mind has been replaced by work done in several interdisciplinary fields which prove that the human mind is from its very inception a social mind, which best develops in connection with other minds and bodies, in interpersonal realms. It thrives through attunement, attachment, care and synchrony with numerous other minds and personalities. Moreover, research has also shown that higher order faculties in the human subject develop when there is the constant care and sensitivit

Heart rate synchrony as an objective biomarker in psychotherapy: a wearable-based pilot study.

Therapeutic alliance is a well-known predictor of psychotherapy outcome and is often measured by subjective self-reports prone to biases. This pilot study examined whether interpersonal synchrony (IPS) in movement and heart rate (HR), derived from wearable wristbands, can serve as an objective measure of therapeutic engagement in naturalistic cognitive behavioral therapy sessions. Twelve transdiagnostic patient-therapist dyads were analyzed in a short-term follow-up design. Physiological signals were continuously recorded with multisensor wrist-worn devices, while head and body movements were

An Update on Evidence-Based Psychosocial Treatments for Eating Disorders in Children and Adolescents.

Eating disorders are relatively common and serious disorders in adolescents. However, there are few controlled psychosocial intervention studies with this younger population. This review updates a previous Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology review published in 2008. The recommendations in this review were developed after searching the literature including PubMed/Medline and employing the relevant medical subject headings. In addition, the bibliographies of book chapters and treatment guideline articles were reviewed; last, colleagues were asked for suggested additional source

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for the Eating Disorders.

Research findings strongly suggest that cognitive behavioral therapy for the eating disorders (CBT-ED) is more effective than other treatments for bulimia nervosa (BN) and for binge eating disorder (BED), although interpersonal psychotherapy appears to be equally effective for BED. Evidence for the effectiveness of CBT-ED for the persistent (adult) form of anorexia nervosa (AN) is insufficient at present and is essentially absent for AN in adolescents except for some evidence from uncontrolled trials. This article begins with an overview of the early studies in the development of CBT-ED that s

Dysthymia in clinical practice :psychological therapies.

Psychological therapies for depression may have several different targets: symptom amelioration, relapse prevention, and improving social adaptation. For cognitive therapy the targets are mainly the first two of these, for dynamic psychotherapies particularly the third. In dysthymia, provision of a coping repertoire for a long term illness may also be important. There have been few controlled trials of psychological therapies in dysthymia, but one study has found benefit from marital therapy, and uncontrolled studies, suggest some benefit from cognitive therapy. Controlled trials in other form

Forcing an Effortless Stance: The Lived Body in Social Anxiety Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: The fear of scrutiny central in social anxiety disorder (SAD) points to a problem of the interpersonally perceivable body. Whereas the predominant cognitive-behavioral (CBT) account of the disorder understands this as a problem of excessive self-focused attention, the phenomenological literature reveals it as a sign of a fundamental transformation of body experience. The lived body absent from experience becomes the object body at the forefront of it. The present paper contributes to this literature by refining and grounding these notions in first-person descriptions of concrete

Meaning in Life as an Outcome of Inpatient or Day-Hospital Psychotherapy for Personality Disorder.

Psychotherapy may contribute to the experience of meaning in life. This study investigated meaning in life among patients with personality disorders during inpatient or day-hospital psychotherapy. Meaning in life was approached from two conceptual perspectives: personality functioning with an emphasis on self-direction and existential psychology. We investigated changes in the sense of meaning in life and accounted for changes in depressive symptoms and identity and interpersonal pathology. Using pre-post measures, Livesley's General Assessment of Personality Disorder, especially, the Lack-of-

The intertwined path of perfectionism and self-criticism in a client with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

Psychotherapy for obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), where perfectionism is a defining criterion, is understudied. Despite a high prevalence few evidence-based treatments are available for the presentation. Here we describe the course of a 6-month program of metacognitive interpersonal therapy with an OCPD patient with prominent perfectionism and self-criticism, which were considered primary outcomes of the case study. Therapy aimed initially at increasing awareness of maladaptive interpersonal schemas and promoting a healthy self. First, behavioral experiments were used to try

[Asperger syndrome in adolescence: The problem and appropriate treatment].

I have described the corresponding method for bullying, independence and interpersonal relationships of company/opposite sex, thinking disorders caused by suffering damage or victimization and withdrawal and violence in the family among the problems in and in response to Asperger syndrome in adolescent cases. Psychotherapy is used for bullying and interpersonal relationship problems. Cognitive therapy and protective correspondence are more effective in bullying than the exposure method. It seems to be more effective to teach and instruct the corresponding principle as well as supportive respon

How therapists' interpersonal behaviour is perceived by their patients and close others: A longitudinal and cross-situational study.

Due to their predictive abilities, therapist interpersonal behaviour is of great relevance for psychotherapy. However, there is a lack of knowledge about its stability inside but also outside of the therapy room within and between therapists. The current study investigates interpersonal behaviour of trainee therapists (N = 20) as perceived by four patients each suffering from generalized anxiety disorder and three closely related persons of every therapist (close others). Investigating repeated measures, four patients per therapist completed the Impact Message Inventory (IMI; Kiesler, 1987) th

Do patients' symptoms and interpersonal problems improve in psychotherapeutic hospital treatment in Germany? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, inpatient psychotherapy plays a unique role in the treatment of patients with common mental disorders of higher severity. In addition to psychiatric inpatient services, psychotherapeutic hospital treatment and psychosomatic rehabilitation are offered as independent inpatient treatment options. This meta-analysis aims to provide systematic evidence for psychotherapeutic hospital treatment in Germany regarding its effects on symptomatic and interpersonal impairment. METHODOLOGY: Relevant papers were identified by electronic database search and hand search. Randomized con

Two-year outcomes for interpersonal and social rhythm therapy in individuals with bipolar I disorder.

CONTEXT: Numerous studies have pointed to the failure of prophylaxis with pharmacotherapy alone in the treatment of bipolar I disorder. Recent investigations have demonstrated benefits from the addition of psychoeducation or psychotherapy to pharmacotherapy in this population. OBJECTIVE: To compare 2 psychosocial interventions: interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) and an intensive clinical management (ICM) approach in the treatment of bipolar I disorder. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial involving 4 treatment strategies: acute and maintenance IPSRT (IPSRT/IPSRT), acute and maint

A systematic review of the combined use of electroconvulsive therapy and psychotherapy for depression.

OBJECTIVE: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the most effective treatments for severe major depressive disorder. However, after acute-phase treatment and initial remission, relapse rates are significant. Strategies to prolong remission include continuation phase ECT, pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, or their combinations. This systematic review synthesizes extant data regarding the combined use of psychotherapy with ECT for the treatment of patients with severe major depressive disorder and offers the hypothesis that augmenting ECT with depression-specific psychotherapy represents a pro

Core conflictual relationship theme--guided psychotherapy: Initial effectiveness study of a 16-session manualized approach in a sample of six patients.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effectiveness of a manualized, 16-sessions, core conflictual relationship theme (CCRT)-based treatment. DESIGN: Treatment effects were assessed for statistical and clinical significance in a pre- and post-therapy design. METHODS: Six patients seeking help mostly for interpersonal difficulties received CCRT-based psychotherapy. The therapists were six supervised doctoral students. An average of four assessment sessions and one goal-setting session preceded 16 sessions of psychotherapy consisting mainly of interpretive work focused on one CCRT. Patients compl

Psychotherapy as monotherapy for the treatment of bipolar II depression: a proof of concept study.

OBJECTIVES: We conducted a proof of concept study to determine the feasibility of using an individual psychotherapy, Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT), as monotherapy for the acute treatment of bipolar II depression. METHODS: Unmedicated individuals (n = 17) meeting DSM-IV criteria for bipolar II disorder and currently depressed received weekly psychotherapy (IPSRT) for 12 weeks. After 12 weeks of acute treatment, individuals received an additional 8 weeks of follow-up treatment consisting of continued weekly IPSRT with supplementary lamotrogine for IPSRT non-responders. Are there subtypes of panic disorder? An interpersonal perspective.

OBJECTIVE: Panic disorder (PD) is associated with significant personal, social, and economic costs. However, little is known about specific interpersonal dysfunctions that characterize the PD population. The current study systematically examined these interpersonal dysfunctions. METHOD: The present analyses included 194 patients with PD out of a sample of 201 who were randomized to cognitive-behavioral therapy, panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy, or applied relaxation training. Interpersonal dysfunction was measured with the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems-Circumplex (Horowitz, Ald

Interpersonal maladjustment as predictor of mothers' response to a relational parenting intervention.

In previous work, Luthar and Suchman (2000, Development & Psychopathology, 12, 235) reported results of a randomized clinical trial testing the efficacy of the Relational Psychotherapy Mothers' Group (RPMG) for methadone-maintained mothers. In this extension, we examined maternal interpersonal maladjustment as a predictor of differential response to RPMG versus standard drug counseling (DC). We predicted that RPMG mothers with high levels of interpersonal maladjustment would improve on parent-child relationship indices, whereas DC mothers with high levels of interpersonal maladjustment would s

The Influence of Psychotherapy on Peripheral Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Concentration Levels and Gene Methylation Status: A Systematic Review.

Psychotherapy is a well-established method of treating many mental disorders. It has been proven that psychotherapy leads to structural and functional changes in the brain; however, knowledge about the molecular and cellular mechanisms of these changes is limited. Neuroplasticity and one of its mediators, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), are potential research targets in this field. To define the role of BDNF concentration in serum, or in plasma, and BDNF promoter gene methylation in saliva or leucocytes, in psychotherapy, an extensive literature search was conducted in the PubMed and

Implementing interpersonal and social rhythm therapy for mood disorders across a continuum of care.

OBJECTIVE: Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy for mood disorders. The goal of this quality improvement initiative was to demonstrate feasibility of implementing IPSRT across the continuum of outpatient and inpatient care within an academic medical center. METHODS: A multidisciplinary work group was convened to implement IPSRT in outpatient (N=48), inpatient (N=602), and intensive outpatient (N=68) programs of an academic medical center. Quality improvement performance markers (including symptoms and group attendance rates) were collected. RESUL
