Designing healthcare transformation: a hybrid model between the hospital and home for high-risk pregnant women.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare organizations are developing hybrid models of care between the hospital and home using remote technologies for monitoring and communication, aiming to transform their healthcare service. While most programs focus on technology integration and adaptation, or on clinical safety and quality, sustainable healthcare transformation requires a system design approach that coordinates change across human, technological, and spatial dimensions. This study investigates a novel hybrid model for women with high-risk pregnancy, offering an alternative to prolonged hospital stays. Th

JCI Accreditation and Outpatient Surgery: A Scoping Review of Evidence on Healthcare Quality, Risk Management, and Policy.

Background: The global healthcare landscape is being increasingly shaped by two pivotal trends: the adoption of international quality frameworks, such as Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, and the strategic shift towards resource-efficient models like outpatient surgery. While both areas have been extensively addressed in the healthcare literature, empirical evidence concerning their intersection remains limited. This scoping review aimed to systematically map the available literature, identify critical evidence gaps at the intersection of JCI accreditation and outpatient surg

Interdisciplinary perspectives on multi-risk anticipatory action.

Anticipatory action (AA) has transformed how humanitarian actors respond to forecasted crises, yet most systems remain built around single hazards. This perspective argues that to stay effective in a world where climate, conflict, and economic shocks increasingly intersect, AA must evolve toward a multi-risk approach. Drawing on a review of 105 active frameworks in 2023 and 154 in 2024 from the Anticipation Hub's 2024 and 2025 global overview reports, expert consultations, and 17 interviews, we examine how practitioners and scientists are beginning to bridge this gap. Extreme Weather, Vulnerable Populations, and Mental Health: The Timely Role of AI Interventions.

Environmental disasters are becoming increasingly frequent and severe, disproportionately impacting vulnerable populations who face compounded risks due to intersectional factors such as gender, socioeconomic status, rural residence, and cultural identity. These events exacerbate mental health challenges, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and underserved areas of high-income countries (HICs). Addressing these disparities necessitates inclusive, culturally competent, intersectional, and cost-effecti

Intersection AEB implementation strategies for left turn across path crashes.

Objective: Left turn across path with traffic from the opposite direction (LTAP/OD) is the second most frequent car-to-car intersection crash type after straight crossing path (SCP) in Germany and the United States. Intersection automated emergency braking (AEB) for passenger cars can address these crashes. This study investigates 2 implementation strategies of intersection AEB addressing LTAP/OD crashes: (1) only the turning car is equipped with an intersection AEB and (2) turning and straight-heading cars are equipped with an intersection AEB. For each strategy, the influence of a safety zon

Disparities in Delirium across the Continuum of Care and Associations with Social Determinants of Health.

Disparities exist in the identification, treatment, and management of delirium. These disparities can be most holistically and comprehensively understood by using a social-ecological model-which acknowledges multilevel impacts including individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and policy-level factors-as well as a social determinant of health framework, that considers nonmedical factors that influence health outcomes. This narrative review leverages both frameworks to identify and discuss existing literature pertaining to the intersection of these social risk factors and delirium,

Advancing nursing care for older migrants in the context of climate change: A narrative review.

UNLABELLED: Climate change, global migration, and population aging are converging to create unique health risks for older migrants, a group facing compounded vulnerabilities due to age, migration status, and often socioeconomic disadvantage. However, the integration of climate resilience, cultural safety, and nursing care for this population remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review synthesizes existing evidence on the intersection of climate change, the health of older migrants, and nursing care, aiming to identify gaps and propose a pathway for integrated care. METHODS: A str

Unveiling the contextual nonstationary effects of the built environment on individual air pollution exposure: a mobile sensor big data driven research design.

While existing studies have extensively examined the relationship between the built environment and air pollution using monitoring station data, few have considered individual-level exposure. This study addresses that gap by adopting a real-time exposure tracking research design that integrates mobile air quality sensing and GPS tracking. Using 1.40 million mobile sensor observations, we developed an interpretable multiple XGBoost machine learning framework with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis to investigate the nonstationary effects of built environment factors on individual-lev

Robust referring image segmentation for construction and demolition waste recognition.

Automated sorting is critical for improving the recycling rates of Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW), a significant global waste stream. While language-guided recognition-a technology known as Referring Image Segmentation (RIS)-offers a potential frontier for flexible and intelligent sorting, its practical deployment is hindered by a considerable lack of robustness. These systems often fail when operator instructions are ambiguous or do not correspond to objects in the visual scene-common occurrences in dynamic industrial environments-leading to sorting errors and reduced material purity

Confronting stigma in neurogenetic diseases in Tanzania: a clinician - informed narrative.

BACKGROUND: Genetic diagnoses can reduce diagnostic uncertainty but may also intensify stigma, particularly where neurogenetic disorders carry strong social and spiritual meanings. In Tanzania, access to genetic testing remains limited, and diagnoses are often established through available testing combined with compelling clinical evidence. METHODS: Grounded in the Health Stigma and Discrimination Framework and informed by clinical and research experience in Tanzania, this clinician-informed narrative examines stigma associated with neurogenetic disorders. RESULTS: The article identifies dri

Structural threat as a theoretical driver of trans health inequities.

Transgender and nonbinary (trans) people in the United States are increasingly exposed to structural conditions that undermine their safety, belonging, and inclusion. Existing theoretical frameworks focus on how anti-trans stigma and discrimination impact health, but structural drivers of trans health inequities remain undertheorized. This paper introduces Structural Threat to explain how cultural, legal, administrative, and institutional systems destabilize and withdraw social safety and protection for trans communities. Structural threat places trans people in a constant state of uncertainty

Acute cardiovascular complications of immune-mediated systemic inflammatory diseases.

Immune-mediated systemic inflammatory conditions (IMIDs) are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and adverse cardiovascular (CV) events secondary to pathogenic inflammation and derangements in the innate and adaptive immune responses inherent to the underlying rheumatic diseases. As the intersection of cardio-rheumatology continues to expand, a multi-disciplinary approach must be considered to optimize clinical outcomes and long-term survival. This review will highlight acute cardiac manifestations of systemic inflammatory diseases and propose a clinically relevant framework f

Moving beyond the "exotic": applying postcolonial theory in health research.

Postcolonialism offers nursing scholarship a framework for understanding culture and identity as fluid and complex, historically situated, and discursively constructed. This article describes one version of implementing postcolonial theory, using examples from a research project conducted with urban American Indians on the topic of diabetes. I demonstrate the influence and value of postcolonialism throughout the research process. A postcolonial approach can help nursing researchers and practitioners avoid reproducing injustices and stereotypes, illuminate the complexities of life at the inters

Nursing and Peer Support Worker Collaboration in Care for Older People Living With HIV in Australia: A Qualitative Interviews and National Roundtable Study.

Older people living with HIV (PLWH) face intersecting challenges of long-term viral infection, age-related conditions, polypharmacy, and fragmented care from unfamiliar specialists, often compounded by stigma and discrimination. Nurses and peer support workers provide essential support for older PLWH navigating these challenges, yet organizational, cultural, and structural factors can impede their effective cross-sector collaboration. Using in-depth interviews and a roundtable discussion with nurses, peer support workers and older PLWH, our study highlights shared strengths and goals of HIV pe

Performing and Policing Prostitution: Race and Sexuality in Colonial Hong Kong Under the Contagious Diseases Ordinances.

This paper delves into the complex construction and regulation of prostitution in colonial Hong Kong, exploring how intersecting dynamics of race, gender, class, and sexuality influenced perceptions and governance. Drawing on intersectionality, doing gender, and performativity frameworks, it analyzes the role of patriarchal imperialist capitalism, medical expertise, and humanitarian networks in shaping colonial attitudes toward prostitution, particularly through the enactment of contagious diseases (CD) ordinances. Despite existing scholarship on imperial regulation, there is a notable gap reg

Methods for Analyzing RNA Pseudoknots via Chord Diagrams and Intersection Graphs.

RNA molecules are known to form complex secondary structures including pseudoknots. A systematic framework for the enumeration, classification and prediction of secondary structures is critical to determine the biological significance of the molecular configurations of RNA. Chord diagrams are mathematical objects widely used to represent RNA secondary structures and to analyze structural motifs, however a mathematically rigorous enumeration of pseudoknots remains a challenge. We introduce a method that incorporates a distance-based metric τ to analyze the intersection graph of a chord diagram

Reassessing health literacy best practices to improve medication adherence among patients with dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: Dyslexia is characterized as unexpected and persistent difficulty in reading. In addition to language-based deficits, evidence indicates that people with dyslexia may struggle with tasks related to memory and executive function. This discussion paper explores how these non-linguistic deficits could plausibly affect medication adherence among patients with dyslexia. DISCUSSION: There is a dearth of original research literature exploring the intersection of dyslexia and health behaviors in the United States. The authors examine selected best practices from the field of health litera

Framework for integration of regional transportation model (RTM) with collision prediction model (CPM).

Traditional road safety planning is largely reactive, while existing Collision Prediction Models (CPMs) often function as disconnected post-processing tools. However, a growing body of research has highlighted the need for proactive safety assessment at the transportation planning stage. Building on this research, the present study demonstrates a large-scale, automated framework that integrates CPMs with a calibrated, tour-based Regional Transportation Model (RTM), enabling travel demand and network-wide collision outcomes to be evaluated within a unified modelling workflow.
