Candida albicans skin infection in diabetic patients: An updated review of pathogenesis and management.

Candida species, commensal residents of human skin, are recognized as the cause of cutaneous candidiasis across various body surfaces. Individuals with weakened immune systems, particularly those with immunosuppressive conditions, are significantly more susceptible to this infection. Diabetes mellitus, a major metabolic disorder, has emerged as a critical factor inducing immunosuppression, thereby facilitating Candida colonization and subsequent skin infections. This comprehensive review examines the prevalence of different types of Candida albicans-induced cutaneous candidiasis in diabetic pa

Mycology - an update Part 3: Dermatomycoses: topical and systemic therapy.

Treatment of dermatophyte infections is based on the clinical picture and mycological detection of the causative pathogen. Based on the appropriate indication, onychomycosis can be treated topically using an antimycotic nail lacquer. Atraumatic nail abrasion with 40 % urea ointment has a beneficial effect on healing. Continuous treatment of onychomycosis with terbinafine represents the most effective systemic therapy. Terbinafine or itraconazole are the safest and most effective antimycotic agents for the treatment of onychomycosis in children. For laser therapy of onychomycosis, only a few st

Epidemiology of dermatophytoses in Sfax, Tunisia.

The distribution of dermatophytes varies in different countries and geographical areas depending on several factors. To determine the frequency of aetiological agents and the clinical variants of dermatophytoses, we carried out a study between 1998 and 2007. Out of 25 432 subjects suspected to have superficial mycoses, 9960 (39.2%) were affected with dermatophytoses; 14957 positive samples were obtained. The mean age was 35.7 years (range: 21 days to 97 years). Sex ratio was 0.9. Our patients were from urban regions in 81.9% of cases. The most common type of infection was onychomycosis (30.3%)

Clinical presentation of psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory disease affecting 1-3% of the world's population. Joints can be affected in up to 30% of patients. About one third of patients have either severe or moderate (involving more than 10% of body surface area) disease. Patients affected with extensive psoriasis have an impaired quality of life. Psoriasis has a large spectrum of clinical features and evolution, so no complete agreement on the classification of the clinical variants exists. Plaque psoriasis is the commonest form (more than 80% of affected patients). The course of plaque psoriasis varies. Spontaneo

Management of common bacterial infections of the skin.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Bacterial skin infections commonly encountered in the community include impetigo, folliculitis/furunculosis, simple abscesses, erysipelas and other nonnecrotizing cellulitis. The review focuses on recent epidemiological, bacteriological and therapeutic advances. RECENT FINDINGS: Impetigo and erysipelas occur in about 20 and 1 person/1000/year, respectively. Main risk factors for erysipelas are toe-web intertrigo and lymphedema. The true incidence of furunculosis is unknown, whereas outbreaks in small communities are reported worldwide. Staphylococcus aureus is the predomina

Autoimmune pemphigus: difficulties in diagnosis and the molecular mechanisms underlying the disease.

Recently recognised as a desmosomal disorder, autoimmune pemphigus remains severe in some of its forms, such as pemphigus vulgaris. This review is divided into four parts. "Cellular and molecular mechanisms in autoimmune pemphigus" discusses in detail antigenic targets, antibodies, immunological and genetic mechanisms of apoptosis and the involvement of cells and organelles (keratinocytes, lymphocytes, eosinophils and neutrophils) in different forms of pemphigus. These advances have led to today's first-line biologic therapy for pemphigus. The section "Specific features in the diagnosis of imm

Indurated erythema of abdominal skin: An unusual presentation of metastatic endometrial carcinoma-Case report with literature review.

Carcinoma erysipelatoides (CE) is a rare clinical manifestation of cutaneous metastasis, which mimics inflammatory conditions such as erysipelas. Depending on the site of the originating tumour, unusual manifestations involving different sites of the body may occur. We herein report a case of a 60-year-old female patient with metastatic endometrial carcinoma presenting as CE of the abdominal skin and the inguinal folds. Even though the diagnosis of advanced malignancy had been established before and she was currently receiving chemotherapy (carboplatin and paclitaxel), the clinical appearance

[Erysipelas associated with recurrent squamous cell carcinoma of the labium majus after radiochemotherapy].

The erysipelas is a bacterial infection most frequently due to (85% of cases) streptococcus β-hemolytic of group A (SGA), resulting in non-necrotizing dermo-hypodermitis. Many factors may play a role in its occurrence such as general factors: diabetes, immunosuppression, chemotherapy, radiotherapy as well as locoregional ports of entry such as leg ulcer, an insect bite, intertrigo. The occurrence of erysipelas associated with recurrent squamous cell carcinoma after radiochemotherapy is exceptional, requiring early treatment of dermo-hypodermitis as well as suitable and multidisciplinary manage

Navigating Diagnostic Complexity in Hailey-Hailey Disease: A Case Report with Clinical-histopathological Correlation.

Hailey-Hailey disease (HHD), also known as benign familial pemphigus, is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis caused by mutations in the ATP2C1 gene. These mutations impair keratinocyte adhesion and disrupt calcium homeostasis, leading to characteristic clinical and histopathological findings. Herein, we present the case of a 50-year-old male with a ten-year history of recurrent, pruritic, erythematous erosions and maceration in the left axilla and groin. Clinical examination revealed no systemic comorbidities or relevant family history. Histopathological analysis of skin biopsy demonstrat

[Guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of mucocutaneous candidiasis].

This document summarizes current knowledge about diagnosis and treatment of candidiasis affecting the skin and oral mucosa. Several clinical forms of mucocutaneous candidiasis are distinguished depending on a patient's age and infected site, e.g. Candida intertrigo, erythema mycoticum infantile, erosio interdigitalis blastomycetica, candidal paronychia and onychia, Candida onychomycosis, and oral candidiasis. The diagnosis of candidiasis is confirmed by observation of mycelial forms on microscopic examination. Since Candida yeasts (especially C. albicans) are normal inhabitants of the skin and
