Carcinoid tumors: development of our knowledge.

Historically, carcinoids have long been known to be a morphologically distinct class of rare intestinal tumors that behave less aggressively than the more common intestinal adenocarcinomas. It was not until much later that their endocrine nature was recognized. Some authors restrict the term carcinoid to intestinal endocrine tumors, whereas others include a large variety of neuroendocrine tumors. In the WHO classification of 1980, carcinoids were defined as tumors of the diffuse neuroendocrine system that are either benign or neoplasms with a more favored prognosis than carcinomas. They are ch

Rare Presentation of Small Bowel Obstruction Secondary to Intestinal Leiomyoma in a Patient with Crohn's Disease.

Small bowel obstructions (SBOs) are surgical emergencies that can occur with mechanical blockage of the intestinal lumen. These blockages are most commonly caused by adhesions or hernias, but can also result from intestinal neoplasms. This case report documents the rare occurrence of SBO due to a submucosal leiomyoma. This case was complicated by the patient's longstanding history of Crohn's disease, which has a considerable overlap in symptomatology with SBOs. This may have resulted in a delay in the patient's diagnosis. Leiomyomas should always be considered as a potential, albeit rare, caus

Rare serosal cystic gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor with extensive intestinal metaplasia in an adherent gastric mucosa; a case report in a 65-year-old male.

Gastrointestinal (GI) intestinal stromal tumors account for 60% of mesenchymal GI tract tumors commonly located in the stomach and small intestine, predominantly solid tumors that rarely undergo cystic degeneration. A 65-year-old patient with increasing upper abdominal swelling and a computed tomography scan abdomen showed a large unilocular 17 × 16 × 15 cm lesion. A colossal cystic swelling in the lesser omentum, anterior to the stomach, was found upon exploration. Histopathological examination showed a spindle cell tumor turned out to be CD117 positive and S100 negative on immunostains. The

Midgut neuroendocrine tumor presenting with acute intestinal ischemia.

Neuroendocrine tumors represent a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that arise from neuroendocrine cells and secrete various peptides and bioamines. While gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors, commonly called carcinoids, account for about 2/3 of all neuroendocrine tumors, they are relatively rare. Small intestine neuroendocrine tumors originate from intestinal enterochromaffin cells and represent about 1/4 of small intestine neoplasms. They can be asymptomatic or cause nonspecific symptoms, which usually leads to a delayed diagnosis. Imaging modalities can aid diagnosis and surgery remains th

[A case of primary jejunal adenocarcinoma diagnosed by enteroscopy using pediatric colonoscope].

A 39-year-old man presented with dizziness and melena for 2 months. Abdominal CT scan showed constrictive wall thickening with enhancement and proximal loop dilatation of the jejunum. On endoscopic examination, there was large amount of bile stained fluid in duodenum. Enteroscopy using pediatric colonoscope demonstrated an encircling mass with obstruction approximately 20 cm distal to the ligament of Treitz. Endoscopic jejunal biopsy showed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. Small intestinal adenocarcinoma is uncommonly encountered in clinical practice. Because small intestine is relati

A Retrospective Evaluation of the Epithelial Changes/Lesions and Neoplasms of the Gallbladder in Turkey and a Review of the Existing Sampling Methods: A Multicentre Study.

OBJECTIVE: As there is continuing disagreement among the observers on the differential diagnosis between the epithelial changes/lesions and neoplasms of the gallbladder, this multicentre study was planned in order to assess the rate of the epithelial gallbladder lesions in Turkey and to propose microscopy and macroscopy protocols. MATERIAL AND METHOD: With the participation of 22 institutions around Turkey that were included in the Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Study Group, 89,324 cholecystectomy specimens sampled from 2003 to 2016 were retrospectively evaluated. The numbers of adenocarcinomas, dy

Multimodality imaging of small bowel neoplasms.

Although the small intestine accounts for over 90% of the surface area of the alimentary tract, tumors of the small intestine represent less than 5% of all gastrointestinal tract neoplasms. Common small bowel tumors typically are well evaluated with cross-sectional imaging modalities such as CT and MR, but accurate identification and differentiation can be challenging. Differentiating normal bowel from abnormal tumor depends on imaging modality and the particular technique. While endoscopic evaluation is typically more sensitive for the detection of intraluminal tumors that can be reached, CT

Metastatic melanoma presenting as intussusception in an 80-year-old man: a case report.

Malignant melanoma of the gastrointestinal tract is an uncommon neoplasm that could be primary or metastatic. Small intestine represents the most common site for the metastatic melanoma; however, it could be found anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract. Intussusception is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction in adults compared to children. In 90% of the cases, the underlying cause can be found, and in 65% of the cases, intussusception is caused by the neoplastic process. The majority of the neoplasms are benign, and about 15% are malignant. Metastatic melanoma is one of the most common metas

Gastrointestinal bleeding and intussusception due to gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST).

BACKGROUND: Small bowel tumors comprise 25% of gastrointestinal (GI) neoplasms, of which only between 0.2 and 1% correspond to gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). GI bleeding is the most common presentation of GIST, being responsible in 1% of the cases. This type of neoplasm can also be the origin of an intussusception, which is an infrequent process during adult age, representing only 5% of all intestinal obstructions. CLINICAL CASE: We report a case of a patient who arrived at the emergency department due to abdominal pain and lower GI bleeding. The diagnostic process was not conclusive

Metastatic oesophageal carcinoma presenting as small intestinal ischaemia: imaging findings.

We report a patient who presented with small intestinal ischaemia due to metastatic mesenteric disease from an oesophageal carcinoma. Enteroclysis suggested the diagnosis of small intestinal ischaemia, which was found at laparotomy to be due to compression of mesenteric veins by a nodal mass at the root of the small intestinal mesentery. Although this phenomenon has been described particularly in patients with carcinoid tumours, we believe that mesenteric venous ischaemia resulting from spread to the mesentery from an extra-abdominal primary neoplasm is extremely rare.

Effects of choledochojejunostomy with Roux-en-Y exclusion on dimethylhydrazine induced neoplasms in rats.

The role of biliary secretions was studied in the development of neoplasms in the small intestine and colon of rats treated with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH). Sixty-eight female Sprague-Dawley rats underwent either no operative procedure or choledochojejunostomy with or without a Roux-en-Y exclusion. All animals then received weekly subcutaneous injections of DMH at 20 mg/kg for 26 weeks and were subsequently sacrificed. The largest number of neoplasms was found in the proximal duodenum, within 3 cm distal to the pylorus, in the control as well as both operative groups. In addition, only six ne

Immunohistological study of mucous antigens in gynecologic tumors with special reference to argyrophil cells.

Mucinous tumors of the ovary and adenocarcinomas of the female genital tract with or without argyrophil cells were studied by immunohistology for mucous antigens. These were isolated from intestinal mucosa and ovarian mucinous cyst fluid. Mucous antigen, M1 which is primarily associated with ovarian mucinous cystadenoma, was found in all mucinous tumors of the ovary, adenocarcinoma of the cervix, and endometrium. Intestinal mucous antigen (IMA), which is specific for goblet cells of the normal intestinal mucosa, was detected only in a few mucinous tumors of the ovary, with or without argyrophi

Intestinal haemangiosarcoma in the cat: clinical and pathological features of four cases.

The clinical and pathological features of four cases of feline intestinal haemangiosarcoma are described. All cases were in domestic shorthaired cats and the mean age of the animals (n=3) was 13 years. The tumours originated in the colon, small intestine, ileocaecocolic junction or rectum. The rectal tumour was juxtaposed with an adjacent mast cell neoplasm. Metastasis to mesenteric lymph node occurred in two cases, and in one of these cats there was also abdominal seeding. The histopathological appearance was of a spindle cell neoplasm with vascular differentiation in each case. Immunohistoch

Intraoperative Frozen Section Biopsy for the Auxiliary Diagnosis of Transmural Intestinal Intermediate T-Cell Canine Lymphoma.

Intestinal lymphoma is characterized by a malignant lymphoid neoplasm with multifactorial causes, variable clinical symptoms, and, in some cases, rapid progression. This article describes a case of intestinal lymphoma in a dog that had a history of diarrhea lasting two months, accompanied by episodes of hematochezia, which was treated using the CHOP 19 protocol. A seven-year-old male Golden Retriever presented to a veterinary clinic with clinical signs of diarrhea, prostration, and the presence of bloody feces, as reported by the owner. Initial examinations, including hematology, serum biochem

[Lipoma of the small intestine: a rare cause of intestinal invagination].

Lipomas are an uncommon cause of small-bowel obstruction. The symptoms are intermittent and nonspecific. The Authors report a case in which intussusception was diagnosed with echography and the obstruction was treated with resection. They conclude that lipomas must always be considered in the differential diagnosis of intrabdominal neoplasms and in intestinal obstructions.

Pathologic Classification of Neuroendocrine Neoplasms.

The pathologic classification of neuroendocrine neoplasms has evolved over the past decades, as new understanding of the biological behavior, histologic characteristics, and genetic features have emerged. Nonetheless, many aspects of the classification systems remain confusing or controversial. Despite these difficulties, much progress has been made in determining the features predicting behavior. Genetic findings have helped establish relationships among different types of neuroendocrine neoplasms and revealed potential therapeutic targets. This review summarizes the current approach to the d

Spatial proteomics of Onchocerca volvulus with pleomorphic neoplasms shows local and systemic dysregulation of protein expression.

Onchocerca volvulus is the agent of onchocerciasis (river blindness) and targeted by WHO for elimination though mass drug administration with ivermectin. A small percentage of adult worms develop pleomorphic neoplasms (PN) that are positively associated with the frequency of ivermectin treatment. Worms with PN have a lower life expectancy and a better understanding about the proteins expressed in PN, and how PN affect protein expression in different tissues could help to elucidate the mechanisms of macrofilaricidal activity of ivermectin. Neuroendocrine neoplasms of the duodenum, ampullary region, jejunum and ileum.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms of the small intestine are some of the most frequently occurring along the gastrointestinal tract, even though their incidence is extremely variable according to specific sites. Jejunal-ileal neuroendocrine neoplasms account for about 27% of gastrointestinal NETs making them the second most frequent NET type. The aim of this review is to classify all tumors following the WHO 2019 classification and to describe their pathologic differences and peculiarities.
