Serial changes in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease after sleeve gastrectomy and their associations with abdominal adiposity: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the associations between changes in hepatic steatosis and changes in abdominal adiposity after metabolic bariatric surgery. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the serial changes in hepatic steatosis and abdominal adiposity following sleeve gastrectomy (SG). SETTING: University hospital, Taiwan. METHODS: In this prospective study, patients who underwent SG and intraoperative liver biopsy were enrolled. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed to assess the liver fat fraction (LFF), visceral adipose tissue (VAT) area, and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) area. Li

DXA-Derived Abdominal Adiposity and Obesity-Related Cancer Risk Among Postmenopausal Women in the Women's Health Initiative.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is associated with the risk of several cancers, yet conventional anthropometric measures do not distinguish the contributions of different compartments of abdominal adipose tissue. This study examined the relationship between visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous (SAT) abdominal adiposity and the incidence of 13 obesity-related cancers (ObRCs) in postmenopausal women. METHODS: Data from 9950 postmenopausal participants in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) cohort were analyzed. Abdominal VAT and SAT were quantified from DXA scans using vali

Associations of Body Fat Distribution and Cardiometabolic Risk of Testicular Cancer Survivors After Cisplatin-Based Chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown how body fat distribution modulates the cardiometabolic risk of testicular cancer survivors after cisplatin-based chemotherapy. METHODS: For 455 patients enrolled in the Platinum Study at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous (SAT) adipose tissue was quantified on prechemotherapy computed tomography. The VAT-to-SAT ratio was calculated as a quantitative measure of central adiposity. Endpoints were incidence of new posthemotherapy cardiometabolic disease (new antihypertensive, lipid-lowering, or diabetes medication), and postchemother

The portal theory supported by venous drainage-selective fat transplantation.

OBJECTIVE: The "portal hypothesis" proposes that the liver is directly exposed to free fatty acids and cytokines increasingly released from visceral fat tissue into the portal vein of obese subjects, thus rendering visceral fat accumulation particularly hazardous for the development of hepatic insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. In the present study, we used a fat transplantation paradigm to (artificially) increase intra-abdominal fat mass to test the hypothesis that venous drainage of fat tissue determines its impact on glucose homeostasis. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Epididymal fat pad

Relationships between computed tomography-assessed density, abdominal fat volume, and glucose metabolism after sleeve gastrectomy in Japanese patients with obesity.

In this study, we investigated the relationships between body weight (BW), computed tomography (CT)-assessed abdominal adipose tissue, and the glycemic metabolic profile in obese Japanese patients following laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). This study analyzed adipose tissue compartments using CT methods before and 1 year after LSG. Thirty obese patients were studied, and variables measured included visceral adipose tissue (VAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), density of VAT (VAT-D), and density of SAT (SAT-D). We also examined the parameters in patients according to whether they had

Torsion of the Falciform Ligament Fatty Appendage: An Overlooked Cause of Abdominal Pain in Adults.

BACKGROUND Torsion of the falciform ligament fatty appendage is a rare subset of intra-abdominal fat infarction. Fewer than 20 cases have been reported in the literature to date. Clinical and laboratory findings are non-specific, making imaging essential for diagnosis and management. CT typically shows a fat-density lesion with surrounding inflammatory changes along the falciform ligament, which is diagnostic. Recognizing this rare entity can prevent unnecessary surgical exploration. CASE REPORT We present 2 cases: a 47-year-old Chinese woman and 32-year-old Chinese man with right upper-abdomi

Association between visceral adiposity index and oral health status in a National survey.

The Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI) is a gender-specific measure of body fat distribution and function, strongly associated with metabolic diseases such as insulin resistance, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers. However, its relationship with oral health remains insufficiently explored. This study analyzed data from the 2009-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), including 3,938 participants, to investigate the association between VAI and oral health, as well as the potential mediating role of the Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII). Multivariate logistic

Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis Mechanisms in Cognitive Impairment Associated with Central Obesity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Central obesity (CO), characterized by excessive visceral adipose tissue (VAT) accumulation, is increasingly recognized as a risk factor for cognitive decline, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease (AD). This review summarizes current evidence linking CO, particularly VAT accumulation, to cognitive impairment and discusses the microbiota-gut-brain axis as a mechanistic framework for interpreting this association. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies published in recent years suggest that VAT-related indices, such as waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and imaging-derived VAT measures,

Acute cholecystitis in a parastomal hernia causing a small bowel obstruction.

A parastomal hernia is the abnormal protrusion of intra-abdominal tissue and organs through a defect in the abdominal wall around an ostomy. Commonly, they involve intra-abdominal fat, omentum or bowel. However, there are rare cases that involve other organs. We present the case of an 89-year-old gentleman with a gallbladder in his parastomal hernia. Due to his acute cholecystitis, the distended gallbladder compressed adjacent bowel loops in the parastomal hernia, resulting in a mechanical bowel obstruction. The patient was treated with antibiotics and a nasogastric tube. As his cholecystitis

Maternal Separation Differentially Programs Structural and Functional Remodeling of Visceral Adipose Tissue Depots in Mice Exposed to a Post-Weaning High-Fat Diet.

Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is a metabolically active organ that undergoes structural and functional remodeling under obesogenic conditions. Early-life stress, such as maternal separation (MS), may modulate these processes, but its depot-specific effects remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to determine whether MS modulates VAT remodeling in response to post-weaning high-fat diet (HFD) exposure in male C57BL/6 mice. Animals underwent MS during the early postnatal period (PND2-16) or remained unmanipulated (UM), and were subsequently fed either a control diet (CD) or an HFD for 16 we

High-fat diet induced central adiposity (visceral fat) is associated with increased fibrosis and decreased immune cellularity of the mesenteric lymph node in mice.

PURPOSE: Accumulation of visceral, but not subcutaneous, adipose tissue is highly associated with metabolic disease. Inflammation inciting from adipose tissue is commonly associated with metabolic disease risk and comorbidities. However, constituents of the immune system, lymph nodes, embedded within these adipose depots remain under-investigated. We hypothesize that, lymph nodes are inherently distinct and differentially respond to diet-induced obesity much like the adipose depots they reside in. METHODS: Adipose tissue and lymph nodes were collected from the visceral and inguinal depots of

Does Visceral or Subcutaneous Fat Influence Peripheral Cortical Bone Strength During Adolescence? A Longitudinal Study.

This study evaluated the longitudinal relationships among visceral adipose tissue (VAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and peripheral bone strength during adolescence. Fat and lean mass, VAT and SAT area, and android/gynoid (A/G) ratio were estimated with DXA. Our main outcome was strength-strain index (SSI), an indicator of peripheral bone strength estimated by pQCT at the radius and tibia. Sex-specific analyses evaluated the longitudinal bone-fat relationship from ages 11 to 19 years with linear mixed models using biological age as the time variable and adjusted for limb length and lean

Rats of hypertensive ISIAH strain are resistant to the development of metabolic syndrome induced by high-fat diet.

We studied the influence of high-fat diet on the development of metabolic syndrome in rats of hypertensive ISIAH strain and normotensive WAG strain. In contrast to ISIAH rats, high-fat diet in WAG rats led visceral obesity, glucose tolerance, and dyslipidemia. DNA-binding activity of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) decreased in the liver of WAG rats and increased in ISIAH rats. Blood levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and corticosterone increased more significantly in WAG rats. Corticosterone content in the adrenal glands was more markedly reduced in WAG rats. High-fat diet had no

Nodular intra-abdominal panniculitis: an accompaniment of colorectal carcinoma and diverticular disease.

Intra-abdominal panniculitis is a tumour-like inflammatory condition of adipose tissue. The aetiology and pathogenesis of the disease is unknown, but a number of associated diseases have been recorded. It has been customary to deal with only primary cases in the literature. This study was undertaken in order to describe the entire spectrum of the disease including primary as well as secondary cases. Eleven patients are reported, nine of which had an associated colorectal disease in direct continuity with areas of intra-abdominal panniculitis. It is concluded that intra-abdominal panniculitis s
