We have previously shown that rats housed in individual metabolism cages develop arterial hypertension and that this can be prevented by adrenalectomy. In the present work the influence of adrenalectomy on blood pressure, heart rate and on fluid and electrolyte balance was investigated in rats with established isolation-induced hypertension. Seven days after adrenalectomy, systolic blood pressure was reduced to levels similar to those seen before the induction of hypertension; the fall in blood pressure was accompanied by tachycardia. It is likely that the reduction in blood pressure was partl

Isolated pulmonary valve prolapse may be a sign of pulmonary hypertension. Three patients with pulmonary hypertension as a result of left ventricular failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and primary pulmonary hypertension, respectively, are described in the case reports. It is likely that the morphological change of the pulmonary valve is due to exaggeration of the normal convexity of the elastic pulmonary leaflets as a result of a high pulmonary artery diastolic pressure. This two-dimensional echocardiographic sign may prove to be a useful qualitative hallmark for pulmonary hyperte

Frequency-dependent hypotensive effect of cardiac pacing (CP) regarding type of circulation and stimulation regime under programmed changes of impulse frequency from 50 to 90 imp/min was studied in 92 patients (53 males, 39 females) with essential hypertension of the first, second and third degree and isolated systolic arterial hypertension. The rise of the above frequency over 80 imp/min was accompanied with a significant fall in systolic arterial pressure (SAP) in patients with hyperkinetic circulation while heart rhythm under 60 imp/min resulted in a significant lowering of diastolic arteri

Review of haemodynamic data of 151 cases with isolated aortic valve disease revealed severe pulmonary hypertension (pulmonary arterial systolic pressure of 60 mmHg or more) in 17 (11%). The left ventricular end-diastolic pressure was high in all but one case, suggesting that the severe pulmonary hypertension was a reflection of the late stages of aortic valve disease. The majority (64.7%) had a low cardiac index. Premature closure of the mitral valve was seen in 12 of the 17 patients. While the incidence of premature mitral closure was the same as in others with mild and moderate pulmonary hyp

In the United States, the size of the population of persons aged 65 years or older is expected to double within the next 30 years, resulting in a marked increase in the prevalence of dementia. Hypertension is a risk factor for cognitive impairment and dementia in addition to cerebrovascular morbidity and mortality. The evidence for a connection between high blood pressure in midlife and dementia in late life comes from numerous longitudinal studies. A placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized trial involving 2,418 patients aged 60 years or older with isolated systolic hypertension demonstra

Low-dose drug combinations have been proposed in International Guidelines for use in patients with hypertension. The fixed low-dose combination of perindopril 2mg with indapamide 0.625mg combines an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor with a non-thiazide diuretic. Coadministration of perindopril and indapamide did not have any clinically significant effects on the pharmacokinetic profile of either agent in healthy volunteers. In experimental models of hypertension, perindopril/indapamide restored endothelial function, improved microvascular density, reduced left ventricular and aorti

Enzyme-Treated Soymilk (ETS) was produced from Commercial Soymilk (CSM) with the treatment of proteinase PROTIN SD-NY10 (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens). Previously, we have isolated novel peptides from ETS but data related to isolated-peptides are scant. In this study, bio-informatics and in vivo analysis of isolated-peptides showed strong binding affinity to the active site of the Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE). Among four peptides, tetrapeptide Phe-Phe-Tyr-Tyr (FFYY) showed strong binding affinity and inhibitory activity to the ACE-enzyme (binding affinity -9.5 Kcal/mol and inhibitory conc

ACEIs, angiotensin II receptor antagonists, and calcium antagonists are effective and well-tolerated antihypertensive agents but, except in special situations, should be considered alternative drugs for first line therapy until randomized trials show that they are at least as effective as diuretics and beta-blockers in preventing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality for a broad spectrum of hypertensive patients. ACEIs are particularly indicated for managing patients with congestive heart failure due to systolic dysfunction and patients with diabetic nephropathy, especially in Type I diabetes

The present study was aimed at evaluating the effects of combined lisinopril-hydrochlorothiazide (Zestoretic) antihypertensive treatment on sphygmomanometric and 24-hour systolic and diastolic blood pressure values in 631 elderly patients (mean age +/- SD 68.8 +/- 5.8 years) with mild-to-moderate essential systolic-diastolic or isolated systolic hypertension. After a wash-out period of 4 weeks, patients received o.d. lisinopril combined with hydrochlorothiazide for a 6-week period. At the end of both periods, sphygmomanometric blood pressure was assessed 24 hours after dosing and 24-hour ambul

BACKGROUND: Renal denervation (RDN) is under investigation for treatment of uncontrolled hypertension and might represent an attractive treatment for patients with high cardiovascular (CV) risk. It is important to determine whether baseline CV risk affects the efficacy of RDN.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess blood pressure (BP) reduction and event rates after RDN in patients with various comorbidities, testing the hypothesis that RDN is effective and durable in these high-risk populations.
METHODS: BP reduction and adverse events over 3 years were evaluated for several hi

Arterial hypertension is a prevalent disease with great harming potential. After the age of 55 years the remaining lifetime risk of hypertension amounts to 90%. Despite the constant advances some important issues such as the cut-off blood pressure for the initiation of antihypertensive therapy or the therapeutic goal are debated. In this review, we present - based on the available literature - the current concepts concerning the pathophysiology, epi-demiology and antihypertensive therapy in patients aged 65 years or older. The pathophysiology of hypertension in older patients in principle rest

BACKGROUND: Differentiation of cardiac amyloidosis (CA) from other causes of concentric left ventricular hypertrophy remains a clinical challenge, especially in patients with preserved ejection fraction at the early disease stages.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Consecutive hypertrophic patients with CA, isolated arterial hypertension, Fabry disease, and Friedreich ataxia (n=25 per group) were investigated; 25 healthy volunteers served as a control group. Standard echocardiography was performed, and segmental longitudinal peak systolic strain (LSsys) in the septum was assessed by 2-dimensional speckle

Fifty years ago, Dr. John Laragh brought forward the "vasoconstriction-volume hypothesis" of hypertension. This is Ohm's Law in blood pressure regulation, explicating hypertension as a consequence of increased peripheral vascular resistance, cardiac output, or both. Resistance vessels, those of a diameter less than 200 μm, determines mean arterial pressure by controlling peripheral vascular resistance. In comparison, large capacitance arteries, particularly the aorta, confines the systolic and diastolic blood pressure in physiological range through the "windkessel effect." Loss of this cushion

Previous research in our laboratory has established a restraining role of the hippocampal kappa-opioid receptor system in the neural control of blood pressure. Chronic or acute hippocampal administration of kappa-agonists has been shown to reduce blood pressure. Isolation of male Sprague-Dawley rats provokes an increase in blood pressure, which has been proposed as a valid model of mild emotionally induced hypertension. It was the purpose of this study to investigate the blood pressure effects of dorsal hippocampal administration of nor-binaltorphimine (nor-BNI), a selective kappa-opioid recep

Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) is a bioactive lipid that circulates in plasma bound to high-density lipoproteins (HDL) and albumin. Circulating S1P levels correlate positively with systolic blood pressure (BP) in hypertension and negatively with severity in septic shock and with left ventricular function in heart disease. In mice, isolated deficiency in HDL-S1P and endothelial cell S1P receptor (R)-1 both trigger hypertension, supporting an essential role for HDL-S1P in endothelial function. Physiological roles of albumin-S1P and myocyte S1PRs in the cardiovascular system remain incompletely de

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess predictors of BP and hypertension and relations between BP and LV mass in a population-based retrospective study of repaired isolated coarctation of aorta.
METHODS: We collected follow-up data until 2018 of 284/304 (93%) patients with coarctation treated by surgery (n = 235) or balloon angioplasty/stent (n = 37/12) in our unit 2000-2012. Systolic hypertension was defined as systolic BP (SBP) z-score ≥+2 standard deviation (SD) or regular use of BP medication. LV hypertrophy was defined as LV mass z-score ≥+2 SD or LV mass index g/m2.7 ≥95th perc

AIM: To characterize cardiorenal syndrome in ischemic renal disease (IRD).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In examination of 105 IRD patients (63 males and 42 females, mean age 63.8 +/- 5.1 years) we estimated body mass index (BMI), indices of peripheral blood and urine, blood biochemistry, glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Plasmic homocystein concentration was measured in 30 patients. We also studied incidence of some cardiovascular risk factors, clinical variants of atherosclerosis and their correlation with GFR.
RESULTS: IRD patients most frequently had hypertriglyceridemia (67.6%), hypercholesteri

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is the most common chronic disease and a major modifiable risk factor for cardio-cerebrovascular and renal diseases. This study estimated the national burden of hypertension, defined as systolic blood pressure ≥140 mm Hg, on morbidity and mortality in 2021 in France.
METHODS: For all diseases causally associated with hypertension (cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney diseases, and dementia), the number and proportion of cases attributable to hypertension in adults aged ≥35 years were estimated using population attributable fractions. Age- and sex-specific populatio

To investigate the clinical significance and problems of right-to-left (R-L) shunt flow dynamics in atrial septal defects, we performed transesophageal color and pulsed Doppler echocardiography in 30 patients with atrial septal defects of the ostium secundum type. The 30 patients consisted of 20 with a pulmonary artery systolic pressure of less than 40 mm Hg, four with a pressure of 40 to 60 mm Hg, three with a pressure of 90 mm Hg or more, two patients with pulmonic stenosis, and one patient with Ebstein's anomaly. R-L shunting was determined by the presence of a shunt flow signal across the

Pulsed Doppler echocardiography (PDE) from the suprasternal approach was used to assess flow characteristics of ductus arteriosus (DA) in 145 infants (aged 1 day to 6 months) with major congenital heart disease. Direct ductal Doppler interrogation was possible in 138 patients and serial studies before and after medical treatment were performed in 28 infants. According to pulmonary artery pressure and associated heart lesions, 3 ductal shunting patterns were identified. An isolated left-to-right shunt, observed in isolated DA or in right ventricular outflow tract obstruction, was characterized
