CONTEXT.—: Metastatic pleomorphic lobular carcinoma (MPLC) to the bladder is rare and has considerable histologic and immunohistochemical overlap with plasmacytoid urothelial carcinoma (PUC).
OBJECTIVE.—: To distinguish MPLC from PUC morphologically and immunohistochemically, including a newer marker, TRPS1.
DESIGN.—: Ten MPLCs to the bladder were reassessed and stained with estrogen, progesterone, and androgen receptors; GATA3; keratin 5/6; HMWK; GCDFP-15; and TRPS1. Sixteen PUCs constituted controls.

BACKGROUND: p63, a homologue of the tumor suppressor gene p53, is expressed in embryonic, adult murine, and human basal squamous epithelium and encodes both transactivating and dominant negative transcript isoforms. A new variant of congenital exfoliative ichthyosis in two related Bedouin families is reported. The ichthyosis appeared shortly after birth as a fine peeling of nonerythematous skin on the palms and soles. The prominent well-demarcated areas of denuded skin in moist and traumatized regions resembled the 'mauserung' phenomenon of ichthyosis bullosa of Siemens (IBS). A monoclonal antikeratin antibody, designated AEl, was used to stain frozen sections of normal and abnormal human skin by the immunofluorescence and peroxidase-antiperoxidase techniques. BACKGROUND: Animals develop skin regional specificities to best adapt to their environments. Birds are excellent models in which to study the epigenetic mechanisms that facilitate these adaptions. Patients suffering from SATB2 mutations exhibit multiple defects including ectodermal dysplasia-like changes. The preferential expression of SATB2, a chromatin regulator, in feather-forming compared to scale-forming regions, suggests it functions in regional specification of chicken skin appendages by acting on either differentiation or morphogenesis.

Three cases of keratosis follicularis squamosa (Dohi) and one case of papillomatose confluente et reticulee were successfully treated with oral minocycline (50-100 mg/day). The clinical effect first appeared at 2 weeks after the initiation of therapy and no recurrence was observed for more than 3 months without minocycline. Gram positive cocci were demonstrated inside the hair follicle and horny layers in all 4 case. Minocycline might modulate abberant keratinization through its bactericidal effects in these keratinizing disorders.

Some patients who have had prior bladder biopsies or transurethral resections undergo a repeat resection within several months for various reasons. The detection of a few residual tumor cells in bladder specimens with prior biopsy site changes can be challenging based on histology alone. In patients with the major forms of epidermolysis bullosa simplex, either of the keratin genes KRT5 or KRT14 is mutated.
