Association between sensory function and medio-lateral knee position during functional tasks in patients with anterior cruciate ligament injury.

BACKGROUND: Patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury often exhibit reduced movement quality during functional tasks in the form of a knee-medial-to-foot position (KMFP). This movement pattern is suggested to be more common in women than in men, but the possible contributing sensorimotor factors for this altered knee position are poorly studied in these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between sensory function and medio-lateral knee position during functional tasks in men and women with ACL injury. METHODS: Fifty-one patients (23 women) aged 18-40 ye

Error-enhancing robot therapy to induce motor control improvement in childhood onset primary dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Robot-generated deviating forces during multijoint reaching movements have been applied to investigate motor control and to tune neuromotor adaptation. Can the application of force to limbs improve motor learning? In this framework, the response to altered dynamic environments of children affected by primary dystonia has never been studied. METHODS: As preliminary pilot study, eleven children with primary dystonia and eleven age-matched healthy control subjects were asked to perform upper limb movements, triangle-reaching (three directions) and circle-writing, using a haptic robot

Deluding the motor system.

How do we know that our own actions belong to us? How are we able to distinguish self-generated sensory events from those that arise externally? In this paper, I will briefly discuss experiments that were designed to investigate these questions. In particular, I will review psychophysical and neuroimaging studies that have investigated how we recognise the consequences of our own actions, and why patients with delusions of control confuse self-produced and externally produced actions and sensations. Studies investigating the failure of this 'self-monitoring' mechanism in patients with delusion

An fMRI study of imagined self-rotation.

In the present study, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to examine the neural mechanisms involved in the imagined spatial transformation of one's body. The task required subjects to update the position of one of four external objects from memory after they had performed an imagined self-rotation to a new position. Activation in the rotation condition was compared with that in a control condition in which subjects located the positions of objects without imagining a change in self-position. The results indicated similar networks of activation to other egocentric transformation task

Acute Stress Does Not Affect Motor Imagery Ability in Young, Healthy Participants: A Randomized Trial.

Motor imagery (MI) is the mental representation of a movement without its execution. It activates internal representations of the movement without external stimulus through different memory-related processes. Although acute stress is frequent in the population and affects supraspinal structures essential for memory functionality, it is still unknown how that stress affects MI capacity and temporal congruence (TC) between execution and movement imagination. This study aimed to discover how acute stress may influence MI capacity and TC in the subscales of internal and external visual imagery and

Postural balance and oculomotor control are influenced by neck kinaesthetic functions in elite ice hockey players.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates that neck kinaesthetic awareness plays an important role in oculomotor and balance control, however the relationship has not been studied in athletes. As performance in ice hockey demands visual perception acuity during skating, while constantly shifting between unilateral and bilateral stances in sports specific posture more in-depth relationship should be studied. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the relationship between neck kinaesthetic awareness, postural balance and eye movement control in professional ice hockey players and non-trained individuals? METHODS: In

Neglect and extinction in kinesthesia and thesesthesia: understanding proprioceptive inattention.

This paper describes a new observation of neglect and extinction of kinesthesia and thesesthesia (movement and position imperception), jointly reflecting proprioceptive inattention, in a series of patients with parietal lesions. A prototypical case is discussed in detail and unaddressed aspects of proprioceptive inattention are discussed through findings from four additional cases. Thesesthetic and kinesthetic extinction were tested through simultaneous antidromic vertical displacement of index fingers, while having patients report on finger proprioceptive perception with eyes closed. Patients

Proprioception of the wrist joint: a review of current concepts and possible implications on the rehabilitation of the wrist.

STUDY DESIGN: Narrative review. Recent years have brought new research findings on the subject of wrist joint proprioception, which entails an understanding of the wrist as part of a sensorimotor system where afferent information from nerve endings in the wrist joint affects the neuromuscular control of the joint. An understanding of proprioception is also essential to adequately rehabilitate patients after wrist injuries. The aim of this narrative review was to give the reader a background of proprioception as it relates to neuromuscular control and joint stability, what is presently known in

[Specific riding styles are associated with specific effects on bodily posture control].

BACKGROUND: The assessment of body posture control can be time consuming and cumbersome due to the complexity and the multimodal influence of a multiply influenced system. Various types of equine paces, such as stepping, trotting or galloping, result in acceleration and deceleration forces of different magnitude. These forces induce, in the horseman, reflexes that mediate motor activity to sustain posture balance and counterbalance the gravitational pull. However, there is a paucity of real life data regarding the extent of the various postural subsystems that are recruited to control postural

Mirror movements and the role of handedness: isometric grip forces changes.

Co-activation of both hemispheres seems to play a critical role in the generation of mirror movements, involuntary muscle contractions opposite to voluntary movements of one hand. The relationship between handedness und mirror movements is unclear. We measured repetitive grip force changes performed at slow and fast frequencies with the active hand and recorded mirror activity in the opposite inactive hand in 17 healthy left-handed (LH) and 17 right-handed (RH) participants. Data suggest significant differences between RH and LH with respect to the temporo-spatial characteristics of mirror act

On the syndrome of the "spare limb": one case.

We describe a case of a brain-damaged patient who had a peculiar bodily illusion which could not be labelled an hallucination but seemed somatognosically and phenomenologically similar to the phantom limb without amputation. The patient, who showed left hemiplegia, felt a third upper limb (without seeing it) which he himself defined as "spare." The spare limb was not deformed; it could be moved and controlled by the patient, and there was no sensation of pain. The patient did not show psychopathological or cognitive disorders. A possible interpretation of the phenomenon is as a "phantom moveme

Surface dependence: a balance control strategy in panic disorder with agoraphobia.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have reported vestibular dysfunction and impaired balance in patients with agoraphobia. Vestibular dysfunction may lead to an information processing strategy focusing on spatial stimuli from two nonvestibular sensory channels, vision and proprioception. This nonvestibular balance control strategy may in turn lead to discomfort in situations involving inadequate visual or proprioceptive spatial cues (space and motion discomfort). The objective of this study was to examine sensory integration of spatial information in agoraphobia. Because of previous findings that spa

Educational Kinesiology with learning disabled children: an efficacy study.

Educational Kinesiology is a treatment using specific movements to access different parts of the brain in maximizing learning potential. It has been recommended for use with learning disabled children; however, studies validating its effects are limited. The school records of 25 students each with a diagnosis of specific learning disability were examined for pre- and posttest scores on academic and perceptual motor skill measures following an Educational Kinesiology program. Analysis indicated significant improvement in perceptual motor skills following the Educational Kinesiology program. The

A comparison of some effects of three antimotion sickness drugs on nystagmic responses to angular accelerations and to optokinetic stimuli.

While the basic efficacy of antimotion sickness drugs is rooted in the reduction of motion sickness symptoms, adverse side effects are important practical considerations of their usage in aviation. This study examined the influence of three established antimotion sickness drugs on nystagmic eye movement responses to angular acceleration (whole-body movement) with vision either permitted or denied, and to optokinetic stimulation (visual field movement). Dimenhydrinate and promethazine hydrochloride, particularly at higher dose levels, reduced optokinetic nystagmus, thereby making less accurate

Multisensory integration in speed estimation during self-motion.

This study assessed the relative contributions of visual and proprioceptive/motor information during self-motion in a virtual environment using a speed discrimination task. Subjects wore a head-mounted display and rode a stationary bicycle along a straight path in an empty, seemingly infinite hallway with random surface texture. For each trial, subjects were required to pedal the bicycle along two paths at two different speeds (a standard speed and a comparison speed) and subsequently report whether the second speed travelled was faster than the first. The standard speed remained the same whil
