Estimated effects of in utero cocaine exposure on language development through early adolescence.

The potential longitudinal effects of prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) on language functioning were estimated from early childhood through early adolescence in a large, well-retained urban sample of 451 full-term children (242 cocaine-exposed, 209 non-cocaine-exposed) participating in the Miami Prenatal Cocaine Study (MPCS). The sample was enrolled prospectively at birth, with documentation of prenatal drug exposure status through maternal interview, and toxicology assays of maternal and infant urine, and infant meconium. Age-appropriate versions of the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundament

Predicting word decoding and word spelling development in children with Specific Language Impairment.

UNLABELLED: This longitudinal investigation on Dutch children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) aimed at determining the predictive value of statistically uncorrelated language proficiencies on later reading and spelling skills in Dutch. Language abilities, tested with an extensive test battery at the onset of formal reading instruction, were represented by four statistically uncorrelated factors: lexical-semantic abilities, auditory perception, verbal-sequential processing, and speech production. All factors contributed significantly to the prediction of word reading and spelling develo

Mild conductive hearing loss and language development: a one year follow-up study.

Thirteen children aged 3 to 5 years with mild conductive hearing losses and histories of otitis media were pair-matched with audiologically normal children on age, sex, socioeconomic status, family intactness, and first language (English). The Test for Auditory Comprehension of Language, the Northwestern Syntax Screening Test, and the Developmental Sentence Scoring Procedure were administered. Phonology errors were tabulated from the spontaneous language sample. The language evaluation was repeated after a 1-year interval. All measures differentiated the groups at highly significant levels on

Development and Exploratory Evaluation of a Large Language Model-Supported Scoping Review Workflow.

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated human-level performance in literature review screening phases and have been evaluated in systematic-review workflows. However, LLM performance in scoping reviews, which are broader and more heterogeneous, remains understudied. We developed a modular LLM-supported framework for scoping-review workflows and compared the performance of two general-purpose LLMs against human reviewers on a reference scoping review. The reference review's keyword search results (n = 1336) and prompt sets mirroring workflow stages were provided to GPT-5 and gpt-oss-20b

Evaluating Large Language Models in Clinical Audiology (AUDIOLOGYBENCH): Benchmark Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly being explored for clinical decision support, but their performance in audiology has not been systematically benchmarked using clinically grounded case materials and rubric-based safety evaluations. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate AUDIOLOGYBENCH, a 3-tier benchmark for characterizing frontier LLM capability in clinical audiology along (1) curated domain knowledge, (2) literature-derived evidence, and (3) clinical reasoning under multimodal case input, with an explicit human audit of the automated adjudicator on the

The role of language in executive function development: Evidence from oral deaf preschoolers.

Language and executive function (EF) are correlated in preschool years. However, whether language plays a causal role in supporting EF development remains unclear given that language development cannot be experimentally manipulated. The present study recognizes that deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children's language development represents a natural quasi-experimental proxy, in the common case where children's access to spoken language is delayed until they receive an assistive hearing device. We investigated whether DHH children's delayed EF development, relative to typically hearing (TH) chil

Early Vocal Development in Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Predicts Language but Not Autism Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Language impairments impact 72% of individuals with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Nevertheless, evaluations are often delayed until children are 7 years old or older. Earlier prediction of language impairment is needed. Infant vocal behavior is a predictor of language development in typically developing children, but early vocal development had not been studied in TSC until recent research on 38 infants. In this study, the canonical babbling ratio (CBR) and volubility, key indicators of infant vocal behavior, were low. CBR reflects the proportion of syllables that are canonical

Assessing childhood impact: Virtual and in-person counseling for children's language development challenges.

In recent years, family counseling programs have grown significantly. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a counseling program designed for Late Talkers (LT) or children with Development Language Disorder (DLD) aged 3-6. It also seeks to analyze the differences between its implementation in virtual and in-person settings and to gather the opinions of speech therapists and families about the program. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was employed with two groups, each consisting of 17 children, totaling 34 children: one in an in-person setting and the other in

Strategies to support language development in neonatal intensive care unit: a narrative review.

Despite neonatal intensive care advancements and quality improvements, preterm infants often experience delays in speech and language development during early childhood. The etiological pathway of language delays is multifactorial, including younger gestational age at birth, male sex, pregnancy complications including gestational diabetes mellitus and preeclampsia, organic pathology from neonatal morbidities, environmental factors of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and prolonged hospitalization, home environment including socioeconomic status and parental education, and parent-infant i

Development of information sharing in language neocortex in childhood-onset drug-resistant epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: We studied age-related dynamics of information sharing among cortical language regions with electrocorticographic high-gamma modulation during picture-naming and story-listening tasks. METHODS: Seventeen epilepsy patients aged 4-19 years, undergoing extraoperative monitoring with left-hemispheric subdural electrodes, were included. Mutual information (MI), a nondirectional measure of shared information, between 16 pairs of cortical regions of interest, was computed from trial-averaged 70-150 Hz power modulations during language tasks. Impact of age on pairwise MI between language r

Childhood autism: deficits of communication and symbolic development. I. Distinctions from language disorders.

The present paper reviews, outlines, and explores the literature concerned with the speech-language disorder of childhood autism. The problems of communication of the autistic child are compared and contrasted with those of children with a variety of other language disorders (e.g. receptive developmental dysphasia). Based upon the review of normal preverbal communicatory and symbolic development, it is concluded that childhood autism involves a pervasive language disorder encompassing communication in general, as well as certain symbolic-representational abilities necessary for language. Assessing child development scores among minority and Indigenous language versus dominant language speakers: a cross-sectional analysis of national Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys.

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have highlighted the inequities minority and Indigenous children face when accessing health care. Health and wellbeing are positively impacted when Indigenous children are educated and receive care in their maternal language. However, less is known about the association between minority or Indigenous language use and child development risks and outcomes. In this study, we provide global estimates of development risks and assess the associations between minority or Indigenous language status and early child development using the ten-item Early Child Development Inde
