Multiple sclerosis (MS) in Latin America (LA) is considered to have a low to medium prevalence. However, accurate information on MS in LA is scarce. The aim of this study was to compare clinical characteristics among LA patients through a systematic review of the literature. A systematic search (Spanish, Portuguese and English) was done for all clinical studies of MS in humans (MEDLINE, PubMed, Scielo, BIREME, EMBASE and LILACS) up to May 2011 being focused on a well-defined Latin American population (peer-reviewed journal) following the MOOSE guidelines. The search strategy included combinati

This paper analyzes the rationale for, and costs associated with, the control and elimination of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in Latin America and the Caribbean. It also estimates the magnitude of potential health gains. The results suggest that lymphatic filiariasis, onchocerciasis, and trachoma can be feasibly and affordably eliminated by 2020, at a total cost of US$128 million. Control of other NTDs could produce important reductions in prevalence and incidence, along with other social and economic benefits. In particular, controlling soil-transmitted helminths (roundworm and hookworm

Newborn screening (NBS) in Latin America took its first steps in the mid-1970s. Nevertheless, many years elapsed before it achieved its integration within the public health care system and its systematic and continuous implementation under a programme structure. Latin American countries can be characterized not only by their great geographic, demographic, ethnic, economic and health system diversity, but also by their heterogeneity in NBS activities, which gives rise to variation in degree of organization: countries with optimal fulfilment (Cuba, Costa Rica, Chile, Uruguay); others rapidly exp

Streptococcus pneumoniae (Strep. pneumoniae) is the main cause of bacterial pneumonia in children less than 5 years of age, with high mortality rates in developing countries. In 1993, the Regional System for Vaccines Group (SIREVA) of the pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO) began a study involving six Latin American countries to identify serotypes and their representativity in the new conjugated vaccines, and to determine the degree of resistance to penicillin. Serotypes 14 (highest resistance level), 5, 1, 6A/B, 23F, 7F, 9V, 19F, 18C, 19A, 9N, were prevalent in the region, with some diffe

This article introduces a conjecture and reviews partial evidence about peculiarities in the aging of populations in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) that may impact future elderly health status. Using Survey on Health and Well-Being of Elders data (SABE; n = 10,902), the authors estimated effects of early childhood conditions on adult diabetes and heart disease. Using Waaler-type surfaces, the authors obtained expected mortality risks for SABE and also U.S. elderly (Health and Retirement System, n = 12,527). Expected mortality risks using Waaler-type surfaces among elderly in LAC reflect

OBJECTIVES: West Nile virus (Flavivirus: Flaviviridae; WNV) has spread rapidly throughout the Caribbean Basin since its initial detection there in 2001. This report summarizes our current knowledge of WNV transmission in tropical America.
METHODS: We reviewed the published literature and consulted with key public health officials to obtain unpublished data.
RESULTS: West Nile virus infections first appeared in human residents of the Cayman Islands and the Florida Keys in 2001, and in apparently healthy Jamaican birds sampled early in 2002. Serologic evidence of WNV infection in 2002 was dete

Four serotypes of dengue viruses produce dengue fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever, and dengue shock syndrome. They are the most important arbovirus infections of humans, in terms of both morbidity and mortality, constituting one of the most rapidly expanding and re-emerging infectious disease problems in Latin America. In less than 20 years, the region has transformed itself from hypoendemic to hyperendemic, while serotype circulation in most countries has gone from none or single to multiple. Changes in endemicity have coincided with the emergence and increasing incidence of the severer forms o

The purpose of this article is to present a critical review of the literature on the causes and consequences of intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and of body proportions at birth among IUGR infants. IUGR is generally defined as a birth weight below the tenth percentile of a reference weight distribution according to gestational age. Chronic maternal malnutrition and other poverty-related factors are likely to be important determinants of IUGR in developing countries. IUGR has been associated with increased risks of neonatal morbidity and mortality and alterations in physical and mental de

With the advent of rapid and convenient means of transportation, millions of persons travel each year from industrialized to developing countries in the tropics and subtropics. These travelers are at risk for a variety of infectious diseases that are endemic in these areas; the most frequently occurring of these is diarrhea. Studies of groups of travelers to Latin America and Africa have found that approximately one-half develop diarrhea during their stay abroad. Etiologic investigations of these illnesses have demonstrated that the important agents that cause travelers' diarrhea are similar t

Oropouche virus (OROV) is an arbovirus endemic to the Amazon region since the 1950s that re-emerged in late 2023, causing a major epidemic across Central and South America. Here we investigated the transmission dynamics of the 2023-2024 epidemic in Manaus City (Amazonas state, Brazil), a major metropolitan hub in the Amazon, and estimated OROV infections across Latin America and the Caribbean. OROV re-emergence in Manaus resulted in an increase of IgG seroprevalence from 11.4% in November 2023 to 25.7% in November 2024. The neutralizing capacity of OROV-specific IgG antibodies from individuals

INTRODUCTION: Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) often affects younger patients, making time to diagnosis especially consequential. Most evidence comes from high-income countries, with limited data from Latin America.
METHODS: We studied 415 individuals with FTLD-associated syndromes from 12 sites in six Latin American countries in the Multi-Partner Consortium to Expand Dementia Research in Latin America (ReDLat) cohort. Time to diagnosis was calculated using clinician-reported symptom onset (T-Reported) and criteria-based onset (T-Criteria). Associations with phenotype, social determin

IMPORTANCE: Reliable estimates of dementia prevalence trends are essential for health policy planning. Latin America is undergoing rapid population aging, yet it remains unclear whether dementia prevalence mirrors declining patterns reported in high-income countries.
OBJECTIVE: To examine 2-decade trends in dementia prevalence across 5 Latin American and Caribbean sites participating in the 10/66 Dementia Research Group.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional, population-based study included data from 5 population-based catchment areas participating in the 10/66 study: Cuba,

Tobacco consumption continues to impose a profound public health and economic burden across Latin America, disproportionately affecting men, adolescents, and low-income populations. Despite progress in some countries through implementation of the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), significant gaps remain due to weak regulatory frameworks, limited enforcement capacity, and persistent interference from the tobacco industry. Against this backdrop, tobacco harm reduction (THR), the substitution of combustible products with non-combustible or lower-expos

With the expansion of human microbiome studies in the last 15 years, we have realized the immense implications of microbes in human health. The human holobiont is now accepted, given the commensal relationships with bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses, and human cells. The cervicovaginal microbiota is a specific case within the human microbiome where diversity is lower to maintain a chemical barrier of protection against infections. This narrative review focuses on the vaginal microbiome. It summarizes key findings on how native bacteria protect women from disease or predispose them to damagin

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Health disparities or inequities, which are defined as differences in the quality of medical and healthcare between populations among racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups, have been validated in numerous studies as determinants of survival and quality of life in different diseases, including cancer.Compared to the improvement in overall survival in developed countries in relation to better diagnostic opportunity and novel therapeutic approaches, low and middle-income countries still have significant barriers in accessing these therapies. The potential impact of overcoming

OBJECTIVE: The population of Latin America harbors the highest incidence of gallstones and acute biliary pancreatitis, yet little is known about the initial management of acute pancreatitis in this large geographic region.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: We performed a post hoc analysis of responses from physicians based in Latin America to the international multidisciplinary survey on the initial management of acute pancreatitis. The questionnaire asked about management of patients during the first 72h after admission, related to fluid therapy, prescription of prophylactic antibiotics, feeding and

BACKGROUND: Hepatolithiasis is a prevalent disease in Asia but rare in Western countries. An increasing number of cases have been reported in Latin America. Liver resection has been proposed as a definitive treatment for complete stone clearance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the postoperative outcomes of liver resection for the treatment of hepatolithiasis in 2 large hepatobiliary reference centers from South America.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective descriptive analysis from patients with hepatolithiasis who underwent liver resection between November 1986 and December 2018, in
