An embryonic lethal mutant was found in Japanese quail and named "stumpy limb (SL)". All SL embryos died at pre-hatching stages, showing brachycephaly, a thickened neck, short upper and lower beaks, and short and thick extremities, while their body length was similar to that of the normal embryos. Development of fat embolism is frequent following bone trauma involving the long bones of the legs. Determination of embolic free lipids in the plasma is based on microfiltration of lipid droplets (diameter greater than 5 micron) and nephelometric measurements after dissolution and specific precipitation. Free lipid levels in normal subjects are less than 5 mg/l. This value may rise to 37 mg/l after fracture of the leg bones and always increases after centromedullary pinning, reaching its maximum value three to nine hours after the operation. Three cases of fibrous dysplasia of bone, affecting the long bones of the leg are described. This condition is a clearly defined radiological and clinical entity. The tibial lesion is reminiscent of a congenital pseudarthrosis but the involvement of the fibula is a useful diagnostic clue.
