Favorable fragmentation: river reservoirs can impede downstream expansion of riparian weeds.

River valleys represent biologically rich corridors characterized by natural disturbances that create moist and barren sites suitable for colonization by native riparian plants, and also by weeds. Dams and reservoirs interrupt the longitudinal corridors and we hypothesized that this could restrict downstream weed expansion. To consider this "reservoir impediment" hypothesis we assessed the occurrences and abundances of weeds along a 315-km river valley corridor that commenced with an unimpounded reach of the Snake River and extended through Brownlee, Oxbow, and Hells Canyon reservoirs and dams

The chrondoprotective actions of a natural product are associated with the activation of IGF-1 production by human chondrocytes despite the presence of IL-1beta.

BACKGROUND: Cartilage loss is a hallmark of arthritis and follows activation of catabolic processes concomitant with a disruption of anabolic pathways like insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). We hypothesized that two natural products of South American origin, would limit cartilage degradation by respectively suppressing catabolism and activating local IGF-1 anabolic pathways. One extract, derived from cat's claw (Uncaria guianensis, vincaria), is a well-described inhibitor of NF-kappaB. The other extract, derived from the vegetable Lepidium meyenii (RNI 249), possessed an uncertain mechanism

Anti-Oxidative and Anti-Apoptotic Oligosaccharides from Pichia pastoris-Fermented Cress Polysaccharides Ameliorate Chromium-Induced Liver Toxicity.

Oxidative stress impairs the structure and function of the cell, leading to serious chronic diseases. Antioxidant-based therapeutic and nutritional interventions are usually employed for combating oxidative stress-related disorders, including apoptosis. Here, we investigated the hepatoprotective effect of oligosaccharides, produced through Pichia pastoris-mediated fermentation of water-soluble polysaccharides isolated from Lepidium sativum (cress) seed mucilage, on chromium(VI)-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis in mice. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC), using Bio-Gel P-10 column, of th

Bioremediation of contaminated lake sediments and evaluation of maturity indicies as indicators of compost stability.

Land contamination is one of the widely addressed problems, which is gaining importance in many developed and developing countries. International efforts are actively envisaged to remediate contaminated sites as a response to adverse health effects. Popular conventional methodologies only transfer the phase of the contaminant involving cost intensive liabilities besides handling risk of the hazardous waste. Physico-chemical methods are effective for specific wastes, but are technically complex and lack public acceptance for land remediation. iBioremediatio nî, is one of the emerging low-cost t

Peruvian maca supplementation improves growth efficiency and modulates gut microbiota in pigs without affecting meat quality.

Plant-derived additives in animal nutrition are frequently studied for their potential to enhance growth performance and meat quality. Their effects on gut microbiota composition are also evaluated in view of its fundamental role in overall animal health and metabolic homeostasis. Therefore, we investigated the effect of adding Peruvian maca (Lepidium meyenii) to the pig diet on pH, ammonia, and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the digesta and growth parameters, carcass characteristics, and gut microbiota in growing pigs using next-generation sequencing. The experiment included two dietary t
