Identification and Physicochemical Properties of the Novel Hemolysin(s) From Oral Secretions of Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Hemolysins cause the lysis of invading organisms, representing major humoral immunity used by invertebrates. Hemolysins have been discovered in hemolymph of Helicoverpa armigera larvae as immune factors. As oral immunity is great important to clear general pathogens, we presumed that hemolysins may be present in oral secretions (OS). To confirm this hypothesis, we conducted four testing methods to identify hemolysin(s) in larval OS of H. armigera, and analyzed physicochemical properties of the hemolysin in comparison with hemolytic melittin of Apis mellifera (L.) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) venom. W

Does Singular and Stacked Corn Affect Choice Behavior for Oviposition and Feed in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)?

Little is known about the effects of genetically modified corn plants on the foraging of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith). Therefore, this study examines whether singular herbicide-tolerant and insect-resistant plants and their stacked events interfere with food preference and oviposition of S. frugiperda. Two non-Bt corn hybrids and three Bt-hybrids, some of them with glyphosate tolerance (GT), were evaluated. Food preference of larvae and biological parameters were assessed. Oviposition preference bioassays involved choice and no choice condition in plants uninfested and previously infeste

Effect of Azadirachta indica (Sapindales: Meliaceae) Oil on the Immune System of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Immatures.

The insect immune system includes several mechanisms responsible for defending against pathogens, parasites, and parasitoids. Some botanical insecticides, such as Azadirachta indica oil, cause changes in the immune system of various insect species. Spodoptera frugiperda is an important agricultural pest; thus, knowledge about the effect of neem oil on the immune system of this species can assist in its management. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of A. indica oil on the immune system of S. frugiperda. Caterpillars (2-3 mg) were placed individually in containers (50 ml) with approximatel

Attraction, Feeding Preference, and Performance of Spodoptera frugiperda Larvae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Reared on Two Varieties of Maize.

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is an economically important pest of maize and other crops in the Americas. Studies suggest that modern varieties of maize lost some of their natural defense mechanisms against herbivores during domestication and agricultural selection. In the present study, we evaluated the attraction, feeding preference (host fidelity and consumption rate), and performance of S. frugiperda larvae reared on hybrid (Pioneer P4063W) and landrace (Tuxpeño) varieties of maize. We also evaluated the damage caused by S. frugiperda to P

Toward Sustainable Management of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): A Review on the Role of Endophytic Fungi in Crop Protection.

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, is a highly polyphagous pest that has rapidly expanded across Africa, Asia, and Oceania, threatening food security and agricultural productivity. Reliance on synthetic insecticides for FAW management is increasingly challenged by insecticide resistance, environmental contamination, and adverse effects on non-target organisms and human health. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the potential of endophytic fungi as a sustainable strategy for FAW management. Following a systematic literature search, 59 original research articles published

A new genus and species of lappet moths (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) from Central Asia with notes on the systematics of the family.

A new genus, Zolotuhia gen. nov., with the type species Zolotuhia paradoxa, sp. nov., from Kyrgyzstan, Talassky Mt. Range, is established in the lepidopteran family Lasiocampidae. The new genus is characterized by a surprising mix of features in the appearance, wing pattern, wing venation, male and female genitalia, shared with different groups of lappet moths. Based on the review of morphology in the Chondrosteginae/Poecilocampinae/Macromphaliinae lineage of Lasiocampidae, a tentative morphological phylogeny of the genera in the Chondrosteginae/Poecilocampidae group is proposed and two new sy

Metabolomics of susceptible and insecticide-resistant strains of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and metatranscriptomics of their midgut-associated microbiota.

The gut microbiota of insects can influence host physiology and, like the host, can be affected by stressors. In this study, we investigated the effects of insecticide exposure on the metabolome and gut microbial metatranscriptome of insecticide resistant and susceptible Spodoptera frugiperda larvae. Metabolomic analysis revealed distinct metabolic profiles influenced by host phenotype and treatment with three insecticides: flubendiamide, spinosad and teflubenzuron. Amino acids, monosaccharides and fatty acids were prominent among the differentially abundant metabolites. Insecticide exposure a

Effect of Irradiation on Reproduction of Female Spodoptera litura (Fabr.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in Relation to the Inherited Sterility Technique.

Radiobiological investigations on the reproductive behavior of female Spodoptera litura (Fabr.) were conducted with the aim of determining the suitable radio-sterilizing dose for females in order to release them along with sub-sterile males for effective implementation of the Inherited Sterility technique against this pest. Calling and copulation duration significantly increased, while mating success, oviposition, fertility and longevity significantly decreased with increasing radiation dose (100-200 Gy) compared to control. In view of the effect of irradiation on mating behavior and reproduct

Farnesyl biliverdins IXα are novel ligands of biliproteins from moths of the Noctuoidea superfamily: A chemosystematic view of the Lepidoptera.

Bilins, derived from biliverdin IXα, are known from animals, plants and microorganisms, where they play vital roles as light-absorbing pigments. Bilins occur also in many insects. Recently, we discovered in insects a novel structural type of bilins with a farnesyl substituent at pyrrole ring A of biliverdin IXα. The first of these unusual bilins with a molecular mass of 852 (C48H60O10N4) was identified in Cerura vinula, subsequently in Spodoptera littoralis; both species are members of the Noctuoidea superfamily of moths. From an evolutionary point of view, it was of interest to examine other

Peptide toxin glacontryphan-M is present in the wings of the butterfly Hebomoia glaucippe (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Pieridae).

Protein profiling has revealed the presence of glacontryphan-M, a peptide toxin identified only in the sea snail genus Conus, in the wings of Hebomoia glaucippe (HG). The wings and body of HG were homogenized and the proteins were extracted and analyzed by 2D gel electrophoresis with subsequent in-gel digestion. Posttranslational protein modifications were detected and analyzed by nano-LC-MS/MS. An antibody was generated against glacontryphan-M, and protein extracts from the wings of HG samples from Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines were tested by immunoblotting. Glacontryphan-M was una

Accelerated Development and Toxin Tolerance of the Navel Orangeworm Amyelois transitella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in the Presence of Aspergillus flavus.

The navel orangeworm (Amyelois transitella) and the fungus Aspergillus flavus constitute a facultative mutualism and pest complex in tree nut and fruit orchards in California. The possibility exists that the broad detoxification capabilities of A. flavus benefit its insect associate by metabolizing toxicants, including hostplant phytochemicals and pesticides. We examined this hypothesis by conducting laboratory bioassays to assess growth rates and survivorship of pyrethroid-resistant (R347) and susceptible (CPQ) larval strains on potato dextrose agar diet containing almond meal with and withou

Evaluation of sequential presence-absence sampling plans for the diamondback moth (Plutellidae: Lepidoptera) in cruciferous crops in Australia.

Two sets of sequential presence-absence sampling plans for decision-making in the management of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), were developed and evaluated. One set of sampling plans targeted the classification of proportions of infested plants, and the other set of sampling plans targeted the classification of larval density. The action thresholds investigated were 0.15, 0.25, 0.35, and 0.45 proportion of plants infested with larvae, and 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 larvae per plant. They are representative of the action thresholds currently practiced by Australian crucifer growers. Fo

Cytochemical studies on the PAS-positive and metachromatic substances in the cells of enteric epithelium of Achoea janata (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera).

Of the different polysaccharides present in the cells of insects the PAS-positive and metachromatic substances were studied in the cells of the enteric epithelium of the moth Achoea janata during its larval period and following metamorphosis. The amounts of both the substances progressively decrease in sequential pupal stages. The reaction intensity at the cell apex is higher than at the cell periphery. Reduction in the amount of carbohydrate material in the epithelial cells of the mid-gut is associated with change in intracellular localization (by vanishing from definite sites, not by migrati

Lethal and Sublethal Effects of Three Novel Insecticides on Biological Parameters of Pink Bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae).

Pink bollworm (Pectinophora gossypiella) is a serious pest of cotton that causes huge economic losses in major cotton-growing regions. The development of resistance to transgenic Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab in India has led to long-term reliance on insecticides, thus enables the larvae to experience sublethal effects due to its concealed feeding behavior. This study investigated the impact of sublethal concentrations (LC10 and LC30) of emamectin benzoate, spinetoram, and spinosad on P. gossypiella. The results showed that emamectin benzoate was more toxic to P. gossypiella (LC50-2.12 mgL-1) than spineto
