A retrospective analysis of patient's leprosy clinic records at PGIMER, Chandigarh, India for the period 1983 to 1998 was undertaken to study the frequency, time of onset, and risk factors for leprosy reactions. Of the 2600 cases analyzed, 1494 were multibacillary and 1106 had paucibacillary disease. Presentation with reaction was common with 30.9% of our patients having reactions at the time of first visit. The incidence of reversal reaction (RR) was highest during 6 to 12 months after starting multi-drug therapy (MDT), thereafter declining gradually. Late RR occurred in 9.5% of all cases and

BACKGROUND: In Bangladesh, Leprosy remains a key challenge in the public health sector, especially in the rural areas where detection of the disease in the early stages and access to healthcare are still limited. Even though there have been national efforts to eliminate the disease, the burden of the disease remains high. There are people who face consequences as a result of the disease. The aim of this study is to understand the extent of the burden of leprosy among patients and also identify the clinical and socio-demographic factors that are associated so that intervention strategies can be

Histoid leprosy is a rare form of multibacillary leprosy with distinct clinical and histopathological features. It is a variant of lepromatous leprosy with a very high bacillary load. It appears in patients as relapse after dapsone monotherapy and resistance or rarely, "de novo." Although leprosy is slowly declining the exact mode of transmission is unclear. At least until recently, the most widely held belief was that the disease was transmitted by contact between cases of leprosy and healthy persons. Transmission by the respiratory route is also gaining ground. There are other possibilities

It appears in patients as a relapse after dapsone monotherapy, in the presence of dapsone resistance or rarely 'de-novo'. It is a matter of concern as we found three cases of de-novo Histoid that too in 3 months from February 2013 to April 2013; in post-global leprosy elimination era. We report three cases presenting with 'de-novo' Histoid Hansen's disease, with no history of leprosy or exposure to dapsone/multi

Multibacillary, lepromatous or borderline leprosy patients may present two types of vasculonecrotic reactions: Lucio phenomenon and that associated with erythema nodosum leprosum. Despite they can be distinguished through clinical and histological characteristics; both are often used as synonyms. It is said that leprosy reaction should be properly classified for therapeutic reasons, since it is well known that in Lucio phenomenon there is not a good response to thalidomide. The authors reported two cases of vasculonecrotic phenomena in lepromatous leprosy sharing clinical and histopathological

Seventy-five leprosy patients and an equal number of age- and sex-matched controls were examined for tear functions, using Schirmer's test and tear break up time (BUT). There was no statistically significant difference in the Schirmer's test, but the tear BUT showed a statistically significant lower value of < 10 seconds in multibacillary patients compared to paucibacillary patients. Leprosy patients with lagophthalmos and decreased corneal sensation showed a lower value of tear BUT which was also statistically significant. This study shows that even though the quantity of tears is not affecte

INTRODUCTION: Despite sustained elimination efforts, leprosy transmission persists in Uganda. The World Health Organization's Towards Zero Leprosy strategy targets zero infections and Grade 2 Disability (G2D) by 2030. Uganda's National TB and Leprosy Strategic Plan aims to reduce child cases to <3% and G2D to <5%. We assessed temporal trends and spatial distribution of leprosy in Uganda from 2020-2024 to evaluate progress toward these targets.
METHODS: We conducted a descriptive analysis using national surveillance data from the District Health Information System 2 (DHIS2). Newly diagnosed le

A patient is reported who presented with a single lesion on the face which, on histopathological examination, was found to be borderline lepromatous leprosy. The importance of doing skin smears as a routine in all patients to differentiate Multibacillary from Paucibacillary disease is emphasized.

There is clear evidence that BCG protects against leprosy, but cross-immunity with environmental mycobacteria can interfere with vaccination protection. Some have cast doubts whether BCG vaccination can offer a significant impact against leprosy in the Brazilian Amazon, which is an endemic area for leprosy and with a high prevalence of environmental mycobacteria. This study was designed to estimate the vaccine effectiveness of neonatal BCG against leprosy in Amazon region, in Brazil. This is a cohort study nested in a randomized community trial. The study had two main results. First, neonatal

A patient with cutaneous sarcoidosis is presented. The patient was diagnosed initially as borderline tuberculoid leprosy downgrading to borderline lepromatous leprosy and received a full 2 years of World Health Organization multibacillary drug treatment (MDT). Bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy on chest X-ray and cutaneous anergy manifested by negative Mantoux, candidin and trichophytin skin tests suggested the diagnosis of sarcoidosis. Histopathology confirmed this diagnosis. The subcutaneous nodule seen in this patient is a rare type of cutaneous sarcoidosis.

This is a rare case report of osteosarcoma with lepromatous leprosy. A 15 year old male patient presented with swelling around the right knee joint. Imaging and biopsy were consistent with osteosarcoma. After his first cycle of adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT), the patient developed fever, erythematous nodules, perichondritis of ear lobe, and thickened nerves. His slit-skin smear examination showed acid-fast bacilli in clumps, and a diagnosis of multibacillary leprosy was made. He was treated with anti-leprosy medications with steroids, and once his condition stabilized, his ACT was continued. On f

Leprosy is a chronic disease with clinical presentations according to the immunologic spectrum. Lepromatous form is the most advanced, with the highest transmissibility and risk of causing disabilities. Lucio's phenomenon is a rare manifestation among lepromatous patients with a rapid and severe evolution and high mortality. It is difficult to differentiate from ulcerative/necrotic erythema nodosum leprosum and has no consensus on how it should be treated. This article is a qualitative review of the literature after the introduction of multidrug therapy, aiming to bring consensus related to th

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization announced a strategy to eliminate childhood leprosy infections, visible deformities and discriminatory legislation against leprosy patients by 2020. However, challenges in achieving a leprosy-free world and preventing neurological sequelae still exist. HIV infection is a challenge in South Africa (SA). HIV-leprosy co-infection may result in an increase in the frequency of leprosy reactions without affecting the spectrum of leprosy. From 1921 to 1997, the prevalence of leprosy remained <1 patient per 10 000 population. Current SA literature has very

Immunoglobulin G antibodies against the 85A and 85B components of the Mycobacterium bovis BCG antigen 85 complex separated by isoelectric focusing were investigated in serum samples from 129 patients representing the major forms of leprosy, 111 tuberculous patients, and 153 healthy subjects. For both of the antigens, a higher degree of staining was observed for lepromatous leprosy patients and patients with active tuberculosis than for the other groups. Because sera from some healthy subjects recognized the 85A antigen, we suggest that antigen 85B is the most useful component of the antigen 85

BACKGROUND: Leprosy (Hansen's disease) is an infectious disease most common in resource-limited countries caused by the acid-fast bacilli Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis that frequently affects the skin and peripheral nerves. Prompt diagnosis and treatment with multidrug therapy is crucial to reduce disease transmission and sequelae, which include nerve function impairment, ocular injury, and stigmatizing physical deformities. Traditional treatment of multibacillary leprosy consists of 12-24 months of multidrug therapy with dapsone, rifampin, and clofazimine. However, this
