MMWR. Morbidity and mortality weekly report1994eng
A key component of the global strategy to eradicate poliomyelitis by the year 2000 is surveillance for all cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), ensuring the detection of cases of paralytic polio. During the 1990s, most of the countries of southern Africa (Table 1) have reported high (i.e., 70%-90%) levels of vaccination coverage among children aged < 1 year with three doses of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV3). In addition, with the exception of Namibia, all of these countries have reported very low or zero incidence of polio (Table 1, Figure 1). To determine whether the low number of reported

Despite heavy reliance on African Traditional Medicines (ATMs) by approximately 80% of Black South Africans, South Africa exhibits a conspicuous regulatory gap characterized by a complete absence of an official regulatory framework for ATMs indigenous to its borders. On the contrary, the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) provides a comprehensive regulatory framework for non-indigenous complementary medicines under Category D. This policy and practice review argues that this unambiguous dichotomy constitutes a structural and constitutional injustice. It violates consti

This article presents some of the legal, social, cultural, and practical constraints facing women who attempt to enforce their right to maintenance (child support) payments in southern Africa. It is based on research by the Women and Law in Southern Africa Trust, a network of women who research women's legal rights in six countries: Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Statutes in all countries in the region provide that a man must support his legitimate and illegitimate children; there are, however, weaknesses in the laws on the books. The social and cultural constr

The Free State (FS) province of the Republic of South Africa is associated with endemic rabies in the yellow mongoose, Cynictis penicillata. Historically, this mongoose rabies virus biotype occasionally spilled over into domestic dogs, but the canid rabies virus biotype of southern Africa did not occur here, until recently. We report on the recent spread of canine rabies by means of a molecular epidemiological study that was performed on a cohort of 69 rabies viruses collected from dogs in FS province between 1995 and 2007. We have utilized a 592 nucleotide sequence of the cytoplasmic domain o

ABSTRACT: High-risk fertility behavior is a leading contributor to adverse maternal and child health outcomes. This study assessed the prevalence and determinants of high-risk fertility behavior among reproductive-age women in sub-Saharan Africa. We conducted a secondary analysis of Demographic and Health Survey data from eight sub-Saharan African countries with extremely high or very high maternal mortality. A weighted sample of 78,353 reproductive-age women who had given birth in the five years preceding the survey was included. A multilevel mixed-effects binary logistic regression model was

BACKGROUND: Even with the widespread recognition of non- communicable diseases (NCDs) in sub-Saharan Africa region, yet, sufficient evidence-based surveillance systems to confirm the prevalence and correlates of these diseases is lacking. In an attempt to understand the problem of NCDs in resource-constrained settings, this study was conducted to establish the pattern of the risk factors of NCDs in sub-Sahara Africa region.
METHODS: The current Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data sets from 33 countries in sub-Sahara Africa region were used in this study. The individual woman component of

BACKGROUND: Electrocardiographic (ECG) criteria for detecting left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) have largely been derived from non-African populations. Their diagnostic performance in Black African adults with untreated hypertension remains uncertain.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of established ECG-LVH criteria compared with echocardiographically assessed left ventricular mass index (LVMI) in Black African adults with untreated, uncomplicated hypertension enrolled in the coArtHA trial.
METHODS: In this subanalysis, we included 1,125 participants from rural Tanzania and

Malva parviflora leaves and roots were collected from five sites within the Qacha's Nek District in Lesotho. These plants had two distinct growth forms--upright and prostrate. Hexane, methanol and water extracts were made from the plant material and tested for antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity using the disc diffusion and cyclooxygenase-1 (Cox-1) bioassays, respectively. Hexane, methanol and water extracts made from Malva parviflora with a prostrate growth form inhibited the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, while extracts made from plants with an upright growth fo

BACKGROUND: Active tuberculosis case-finding in communities is crucial for early disease detection and disruption of transmission; however, it is complex and costly. A thorough analysis of tuberculosis screening strategies is essential, particularly because the health systems affected often have limited resources. We aimed to compare two community screening approaches in terms of tuberculosis case yield and cost.
METHODS: This pragmatic community trial, with a paired screen-positive design (ie, within-person comparison), was conducted in the Butha-Buthe District in Lesotho and the uMgungundlo

Subclinical vitamin C deficiency frequently occurs in Black mineworkers, in spite of an apparently adequate daily intake. A study was undertaken to establish the minimum rate of supplementation that would effectively reduce the incidence of subclinical vitamin C deficiency. Two levels of supplementation were tested in relation to a control group. It was found that a supplementation rate of at least 235 mg/head/day is required to maintain reasonably adequate serum levels. It was also found that effective control measures are required to ensure that the supplement is added to the magou, the stap

The prevailing economic disparity causes patients from various parts of the Free State and Northern Cape Provinces in South Africa and Lesotho to be treated with radioactive I-131 for thyrotoxicosis at Universitas Academic Hospital. Some patients are obliged to travel long distances (4-9 h) using patient transport services after discharge, causing concern for public exposure of nearby passengers due to a public dose limit of 1 mSv year-1. The study aimed to estimate the commuters' radiation exposure from 62 thyrotoxicosis patients post-treatment with I-131. An electronic personal dosimeter and

Few studies have determined risk factors for diarrheal deaths in developing areas. The Ministry of Health of Lesotho, southern Africa, reported that 9.5% of children under five years of age who were hospitalized for diarrhea in 1984 died. Of 104 children under five years of age who died during hospitalization for diarrhea, 85% were aged 24 months or younger and had nonbloody diarrhea during the warm season. We conducted two retrospective case-control studies of children aged 24 months or younger admitted for diarrhea at two hospitals in 1983 and 1984, comparing 44 who died with 89 who survived

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) living with HIV face heightened risks of mental distress, which may be compounded by exposure to violence and socioeconomic vulnerabilities. This study examined whether social protection moderates the relationship between violence exposure and mental distress among AGYW living with HIV in Eswatini, Lesotho, and Namibia. Using data from the Violence Against Children and Youth Surveys (VACS), we analysed 1,006 AGYW aged 15-24. Mental distress was measured using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6), with scores ≥ 5 indicating moderate-to-severe dis

People living with HIV (PLWH) and their families are subjected to prejudice, discrimination, and hostility related to the stigmatization of AIDS. This report examines how PLWH cope with HIV-related stigma in the five southern African countries of Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland, and Tanzania. A descriptive qualitative research design was used to explore the experience of HIV-related stigma of PLWH and nurses in 2004. A total of 43 focus groups were conducted with 251 participants (114 nurses, 111 PLWH, and 26 volunteers). In describing incidents of stigma, respondents reported strateg

BACKGROUND: Exposure to respirable crystalline silica dust remains a significant occupational health challenge in the Southern African Development Community region, leading to high incidences of silicosis and pulmonary tuberculosis, particularly among mining workers. This study evaluated the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of mineworkers regarding silica dust risks across Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted involving 1440 mineworkers exposed to silica dust in mines across four SADC countries. Data were collected using st

Adolescents and Young People Living with HIV have poor levels of adherence to treatment and retention in care. Previous reviews highlighted the need for high-quality evidence on peer-led interventions for improving HIV treatment outcomes among Adolescents and Young People Living with HIV aged 10-24 years. We conducted a rapid review of such interventions in Eastern and Southern Africa, searching Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest for articles published between January 2017 and December 2024. The search yielded 1,642 articles; 13 met the inclusion criteria. Studies were conducted in n
