Penicillins for the prophylaxis of bacterial endocarditis in dentistry.

BACKGROUND: Many dental procedures cause bacteraemia and it is believed that this may lead to bacterial endocarditis (BE) in a few people. Guidelines in many countries recommend that prior to invasive dental procedures antibiotics are administered to people at high risk of endocarditis. However, it is unclear whether the potential risks of this prophylaxis outweigh the potential benefits. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether prophylactic penicillin administration compared to no such administration or placebo before invasive dental procedures in people at increased risk of BE influences mortality,

A Journey into the Evolution of Human Host-Oral Microbiome Relationship through Ancient Dental Calculus: A Scoping Review.

One of the most promising areas of research in palaeomicrobiology is the study of the human microbiome. In particular, ancient dental calculus helps to reconstruct a substantial share of oral microbiome composition by mapping together human evolution with its state of health/oral disease. This review aims to trace microbial characteristics in ancient dental calculus to describe the evolution of the human host-oral microbiome relationship in oral health or disease in children and adults. Following the PRISMA-Extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines, the main scientific databases (PubMed, Scopus

cDNA cloning of S100 calcium-binding proteins from bovine periodontal ligament and their expression in oral tissues.

The periodontal ligament (PDL) is a unique tissue that is crucial for tooth function. However, little is known of the molecular mechanisms controlling PDL function. To characterize PDL cells at the molecular level, we constructed a cDNA library from bovine PDL tissue. We then focused on the isolation of S100 calcium-binding proteins (CaBPs), because they mediate Ca2+ signaling and control important cellular processes such as differentiation and metabolism. We screened the PDL cDNA library with a mouse S100A4 cDNA, and cloned the bovine cDNAs of two S100 CaBPs (S100A4 and S100A2). In northern b

Caries prevalence and molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) in children. Is there an association? A systematic review.

AIM: Molar incisor hypomeralisation (MIH) is a dental condition clinically characterised by the presence of morphological and qualitative enamel defects involving the occlusal and/or incisal third of one or more permanent molars or incisors. Its worldwide prevalence ranges between 2.4 and 40%. Several harmful conditions, such as genetic or medical problems during pregnancy, may act together and increase the risk of MIH. The main objective of this systematic review is to assess whether there is a correlation between MIH and dental caries in mixed or permanent dentition. METHODS: An electronic
