The authors have occasionally observed nodular areas abutting the lateral diaphragmatic surface and extending into the posterior pararenal space on computed tomographic (CT) scans. Review of the anatomy literature revealed that this finding represents inferolateral extension of the lateral arcuate ligaments, which reflect over the quadratus lumborum muscles to fuse with the diaphragm. CT scans from 100 consecutive patients were reviewed to determine the frequency, relationship to habitus, and appearance of this finding. Nodularity was found in five patients (bilateral in three, unilateral in t

The authors have performed 20 systematical dissections of the distal part of the foot, conserved in the Toulon's liquor and 3 dissections of fresh cadavers. The last ones have been submitted at different puttings in charge before and after the resection of the intermetatarsal transverse ligament. The intermetatarsal transverse ligament is supple, extensible, but very strong. It constitutes the area of convergence of all the neighbouring fibrous structures and of several tendons of the foot. It connects together the heads of the metatarsus. It renders them jointly liable and its action is refle

In most patients with long-standing injuries of ligaments of the knee joint there develops a deforming arthrosis. So, the operative techniques of recovering their stability must be at most sparing. The author thinks the use of "closed" methods of plasty of the ligaments to be expedient. He has elaborated two new methods of operations which were recognized as inventions. Operations were made on 47 patients with good results observed up to 3.5 years.

Specimens of the posterior pubo-urethral ligament were taken from 10 continent females (7 at post mortem and 3 at gynaecological surgery) and from 9 genuine stress incontinent patients. They were examined and compared using light and electron microscopy and neuro-histochemistry. The morphology of all specimens was similar in that they contained dense connective tissue elements enclosing smooth muscle bundles which were associated with numerous nerves, the enzyme content and fine structure of which were similar to those believed to represent cholinergic autonomic nerves. There was no difference

Fifty-one patients with fibular ligamentous injury of the ankle are presented. The treatment consisted of complete non-weight-bearing of the affected foot by use of elbow crutches for three weeks. All patients were seen at follow-up eighteen months after the accident. The results are discussed in the light of previous literature on conservative and operative treatment of lateral ligament injuries.

The wrist is a complex of joints stabilized by numerous intrinsic and extrinsic ligaments. Disruption of these ligaments may lead to progressive wrist pain, instability, and joint degeneration. Therefore, early diagnosis of ligamentous derangements is important to optimize functional outcomes. MR imaging is the modality of choice for the imaging evaluation of the wrist ligaments and may assist with clinical and surgical decision-making. The objective of this article is to provide a review of the MR imaging evaluation of clinically relevant wrist ligaments through a discussion of normal anatomy

PURPOSE: There have been numerous studies focused on the stiffness of tracheal cartilage. However, no research has been conducted specifically on the annular ligament, nor have any regional differences in the annular ligament been identified. The purpose of this study was to investigate the stiffness of the ligaments present between the thyroid, cricoid and tracheal cartilages.
METHODS: The ligaments were identified in the cervical region of living subjects with ultrasonography. The stiffness of the ligaments was measured from the body surface using a digital palpation device (MyotonPRO). Sin

BACKGROUND: Interpretation of patellar ligament (PL) ultrasonography may be difficult, as hypoechoic or heterogenous echogenicity are common findings. Verifying suspected disease of equine PLs by histopathology is also problematic as descriptions of normal PL vascularity and histology are scarce. The current study describes the PL and infrapatellar fat pad (IFP) vascular pattern from computed tomography scans of barium perfused normal equine specimens (n = 8; age 10 days to 18 years), as well as routine histology to serve as a reference for future investigations into PL pathology and IFP disea

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The study aims to provide updated information on the genetic factors associated with the diagnoses 'Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis' (DISH), 'Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament' (OPLL), and in patients with spinal ligament ossification.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have advanced our knowledge of genetic factors associated with DISH, OPLL, and other spinal ossification (ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament [OALL] and the yellow ligament [OYL]). Several case studies of individuals afflicted with monogenic disorders, such as X-linked

Background The dorsal intercarpal ligament (DIC) is an elegant dorsal stabilizer of the proximal carpal row, including the scaphoid's proximal pole and scapholunate joint. Along with the dorsal radiocarpal (DRC) ligament, it acts as a dorsal radioscaphoid stabilizer, with dynamism due to its ability to modify its length up to threefold by changing the angles between its V-shaped bundle morphology. The DIC ligament consistently originates from the dorsal tubercle of the triquetrum on the ulnar side. It spans transversely, attaching to the dorsal groove of the scaphoid (97-100%), lunate (75-90%

PURPOSE: Creating enough decompression, favorable outcome, less complication, and maintain adequate lordosis and stability in the patients with cervical myelopathy due to multilevel massive ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) still poses a challenge for surgeons. The aim of our study is to retrospectively evaluate our patients and try to seek a better surgical strategy.
METHODS: Between 2015 and 2019, 55 consecutive patients with multilevel massive OPLL underwent surgical treatment. Among these, 40 patients were treated with cervical laminectomy and then anterior decomp

The three glenohumeral ligaments (superior, middle, and inferior) are discrete thickenings of the glenohumeral joint capsule and are critical to shoulder stability and function. Injuries to this area are a cause of significant musculoskeletal morbidity. A literature search was performed by a review of PubMed, Google Scholar, and OVID for all relevant articles published up until 2020. This study highlights the anatomy, biomechanical function, and injury patterns of the glenohumeral ligaments, which may be relevant to clinical presentation and diagnosis. A detailed understanding of the normal an

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the contribution of each of the ACL and medial ligament structures in resisting anteromedial rotatory instability (AMRI) loads applied in vitro.
METHODS: Twelve knees were tested using a robotic system. It imposed loads simulating clinical laxity tests at 0° to 90° flexion: ±90 N anterior-posterior force, ±8 Nm varus-valgus moment, and ±5 Nm internal-external rotation, and the tibial displacements were measured in the intact knee. The ACL and individual medial structures-retinaculum, superficial and deep medial collateral ligament (sMCL and

BACKGROUND: Although anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears have received the most attention, the medial collateral ligament (MCL) is thought to be the most commonly injured knee ligament overall. The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and posterior collateral ligament (PCL) are less frequently compromised but can be involved in severe multiligament injuries. The paucity of information on the native properties of these ligaments in the pediatric population hinders the overall optimization of treatment for these injuries.
PURPOSE: To characterize the mechanical and microstructural properties of

The cardinal ligament (CL) is one of the major pelvic ligaments providing structural support to the vagina/cervix/uterus complex. This ligament has been studied mainly with regards to its important function in the treatment of different diseases such as surgical repair for pelvic organ prolapse and radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer. However, the mechanical properties of the CL have not been fully determined, despite the important in vivo supportive role of this ligament within the pelvic floor. To advance our limited knowledge about the elastic and viscoelastic properties of the CL, we

BACKGROUND: MRI analysis of subtalar ligaments in the tarsal sinus has not been well performed. We retrospectively investigated the appearance of subtalar ligaments using 3D isotropic MRI and compared imaging findings of subtalar ligaments between patients with subtalar instability (STI) and controls.
METHODS: Preoperative MRIs of 23 STI patients treated with arthroscopic subtalar reconstruction were compared to MRIs of 23 age- and sex-matched control subjects without STI. Thickness and width of anterior capsular ligament (ACL) and interosseous talocalcaneal ligament (ITCL) as well as thickne

PURPOSE: To detail the anatomy of the medial patella stabilizers, medial patellotibial (MPTL), and medial patellomeniscal ligaments (MPML), focusing on the points of origin and insertion, length, thickness, width, and fibres orientation to study the frequency of anatomical variations and the anatomy of these ligaments, thereby improving surgical techniques.
METHODS: Thirty dissected knees were analysed. A digital caliper was used to measure the length, thickness, and width, as well as the mid-point of the ligaments insertion and the distance from the MPTL insertion to the articular surface of

Acute knee injuries are a common source of morbidity in athletes and if overlooked may result in chronic functional impairment. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the knee has become the most commonly performed musculoskeletal MR examination and is an indispensable tool in the appropriate management of the injured athlete. Meniscal and ligamentous tearing are the most frequent indications for surgical intervention in sports injuries and an understanding of the anatomy, biomechanics, mechanisms of injury, and patterns of injury are all critical to accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
