Both West syndrome (WS) and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) are associated with various developmental disorders and it has been discussed whether the cerebral cortex or subcortical structures are important in the pathogenesis of both epileptic syndromes. Here we briefly review the literature on the neuropathological findings in WS and LGS, and present our data on immunohistochemical analysis of the brainstem and limbic lesions in autopsy cases of lissencephaly and sequels of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) caused by perinatal asphyxia manifested as both WS and LGS (WS/LGS). Nowadays, the n

OBJECTIVES: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with distinct metabolic alterations in the brain, which are detectable via 18 F-FDG PET. This study aims to delineate glucose metabolism patterns and network topology changes across early- and mid-stage PD patients.
METHODS: A total of 80 PD patients (Hoehn-Yahr stages 1-3) were retrospectively analyzed, including 40 early-stage and 40 mid-stage cases, along with 40 age-matched healthy controls. All participants underwent 18 F-FDG PET imaging. The brain metabolic activity was quantified, and network topology was assessed usi

OBJECTIVE: Our recent single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) study of patients with late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) revealed that regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was reduced in the frontal, temporal, and limbic lobes, and to a lesser degree in the parietal and occipital lobes. Moreover, these patients' scores on the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog) were significantly correlated with rCBF in some gyri of the frontal, parietal, and limbic lobes. Our present study aimed to understand how vascular factors and metabolic disease influenced the re

Neuropathological examination of the temporal lobe provides a better understanding and management of a wide spectrum of diseases. We focused on inflammatory diseases, epilepsy, and neurodegenerative diseases, and highlighted how the temporal lobe is particularly involved in those conditions. Although all these diseases are not specific or restricted to the temporal lobe, the temporal lobe is a key structure to understand their pathophysiology. The main histological lesions, immunohistochemical markers, and molecular alterations relevant for the neuropathological diagnostic reasoning are presen

Cerebral blood flow is strongly associated with brain function, and is the main symptom and diagnostic basis for a variety of encephalopathies. However, changes in cerebral blood flow after mild traumatic brain injury remain poorly understood. This study sought to observe changes in cerebral blood flow in different regions after mild traumatic brain injury using pulsed arterial spin labeling. Our results demonstrate maximal cerebral blood flow in gray matter and minimal in the white matter of patients with mild traumatic brain injury. At the acute and subacute stages, cerebral blood flow was r

The idea of a temporal lobe separated from the rest of the hemisphere by reason of its unique structural and functional properties is a clinically useful artifact. While the temporal lobe can be safely defined as the portion of the cerebrum lodged in the middle cranial fossa, the pattern of its connections is a more revealing description of its functional subdivisions and specific contribution to higher cognitive functions. This chapter provides an historical overview of the anatomy of the temporal lobe and an updated framework of temporal lobe connections based on tractography studies of huma

Here, we describe two patients who presented with focal cortical signs and underwent neuropathological examination. Case 1 was a 73-year-old woman with progressive speech disorder and abnormal behavior. She showed agraphia of the frontal lobe type, featured by the omission of kana letters when writing, other than pyramidal tract signs, pseudobulbar palsy, and frontal lobe dementia. Neuropathological examination, including TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) immunohistochemistry, revealed bilateral frontal and anterior temporal lobe lesions accentuated in the precentral gyrus and posterior part

The function of the anterior-most portion of the temporal lobes, the temporal pole, is not well understood. Anatomists have long considered it part of an extended limbic system based on its location posterior to the orbital frontal cortex and lateral to the amygdala, along with its tight connectivity to limbic and paralimbic regions. Here we review the literature in both non-human primates and humans to assess the temporal pole's putative role in social and emotional processing. Reviewed findings indicate that it has some role in both social and emotional processes, including face recognition

BACKGROUND: Research links retinal changes to cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease (PD), paralleling findings in Alzheimer's, raising questions about specific cortical patterns of cognition-related retinal abnormalities in PD.
OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to explore whether retinal thinning linked to cognitive decline could act as a potential biomarker for cerebral atrophy in PD.
METHODS: Twenty seven patients with PD underwent cognitive and neurological assessments, along with retinal imaging using OCT and cerebral imaging using structural MRI. After identifying abnormal retinal layers as

Breathing is a complex, vital function that can be modulated to influence physical and mental well-being. However, the role of cortical and subcortical brain regions in voluntary control of human respiration is underexplored. Here we investigated the influence of damage to human frontal, temporal or limbic regions on the sensation and regulation of breathing patterns. Participants performed a respiratory regulation task across regular and irregular frequencies ranging from 6 to 60 breaths per minute (bpm), with a counterbalanced hand motor control task. Interoceptive and affective states induc

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. PD is widely known for its motor symptoms and non-motor symptoms. The long-term clinical course of PD is complicated by the onset of dementia in 80 % of patients. The diagnosis of PD is based on the patient's medical history and clinical examination, but molecular imaging can play an important role in the study of disease progression and mechanisms. [18F] -fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) -PET, as one of the important molecular imaging methods, was adopted by our research to compare the diff

The temporal lobes are affected in many different neurological disorders, such as neurodegenerative diseases, viral and immunological encephalitides, and epilepsy. Both experimental and clinical evidence suggests a different inflammatory response to seizures in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) in comparison to those with extra-TLE (XTLE). Proinflammatory cytokines and several autoantibodies have been shown to be associated with TLE compared to other epilepsy types suggesting the specific role and structure of the temporal lobe. Abundant experience suggests that activation of both inn

Most studies addressing the specificity of meridians and acupuncture points have focused mainly on the different neural effects of acupuncture at different points in healthy individuals. This study examined the effects of acupuncture on brain function in a pathological context. Sixteen patients with ischemic stroke were randomly assigned to true point group (true acupuncture at right Waiguan (SJ5)) and sham point group (sham acupuncture). Results of functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed activation in right parietal lobe (Brodmann areas 7 and 19), the right temporal lobe (Brodmann area

This study was conducted to clarify patterns of cortico-limbic volume abnormalities in late life depression (LLD) relative to non-depressed (ND) adults matched for amyloid β (Aβ) deposition and to evaluate the relationship of volume abnormalities with cognitive performance. Participants included 116 LLD and 226 ND. Classification accuracy of LLD status was estimated using area under the receiver operator characteristic curve. Twenty-one percent of LLD and ND participants were Aβ positive and the groups did not differ on white matter hyperintensity volume (WMH (logscale); β = 0.12, p = 0.28). C

Systemic injection of kainic acid (KA) induces limbic seizures in rats, which resemble human temporal lobe epilepsy, the most common form of adult human epilepsy. In this study, we have investigated KA-elicited limbic seizures in the rats by correlating the severity of the seizure attacks with the expression of hippocampal heat shock protein-70 (HSP70) which has been suggested to be a marker for neuronal injury/death in this model of seizures. After a systemic injection of KA, six stages of limbic seizures have been classified, namely, staring (stage 1), wet dog shake (stage 2), hyperactivity

Dysfunction of the limbic structures of the temporal lobe of the brain (predominantly the hippocampus), chiasma, hypothalamus, and epiphysis is accompanied by impairment of internal estimation of time periods. In patients with lesions of the temporal lobes and base of the skull, changes in measures of autochronometry were uniform, were the most marked, and were not directly associated with locomotor parameters or with changes in the general functional state of the CNS. In patients with spinal cord or vertebral lesions, including tumors, and in those with extensive lesions of the frontoparietal

INTRODUCTION: Macroanatomical right-left hemispheric differences in the brain are termed asymmetries, although there is no clear information on the global influence of gender and brain-regions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the main effects and interactions of these variables on the measurement of volumetric asymmetry indices (VAIs).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-seven healthy young-adult volunteers (23 males, 24 females) agreed to undergo brain magnetic resonance imaging in a 3T scanner. Image post processing using voxel-based volumetry allowed the calculation of 54 VAIs from the fron

The human parahippocampal gyrus forms a large part of the limbic lobe along the ventromedial part of the temporal cortical mantle. It is a variable and complicated cortex in terms of structure, and the latter is aggravated further by interfaces with the anterior insula anteriorly and the cingulate gyrus and occipital lobe posteriorly. Additional complications relate to its lateral border with the temporal cortex and especially the sulcal configurations that define this junction. The rhinal sulcus, which separates parahippocampal and temporal cortices in other species, including the anthropoid
