Heritability of the depth of the opening of the ciliary cleft in Samoyeds.

Ocular examination, including gonioscopy and ultrasonographic biometry (biological measurement), was performed in healthy, purebred Samoyeds. When the dogs were subclassified according to the degree of kinship with cases of primary angle-closure glaucoma, it was found that the opening of the ciliary cleft was wider in dogs less related to dogs with primary angle-closure glaucoma than in more closely related dogs. Furthermore, multivariate analysis of the material indicated that parentage of a dog has a substantial effect on the intraocular distances studied in this investigation (relative dept

Sow and litter performance after cross-fostering one surplus piglet and co-mingling the litters at early lactation.

The number of piglets born alive is frequently greater than the functional teats, and some farms are equalizing litters with surplus piglets, limiting piglet udder access. Removing the barrier among farrowing crates may allow piglets to socialize and seek other sows. Thus, we evaluated the effects litter size at cross-fostering and socialization on the sow and piglet performance during lactation. Two factors were included in a 2 × 2 factorial design: socialization and litter size relative to sow functional teat number at cross-fostering. Litters (n = 189) were then assigned to one of four grou

Mitochondria-targeted antioxidant SkQ1 accelerates maturation in Campbell dwarf hamsters (Phodopus campbelli).

We tested two hypotheses. 1) SkQ1 positively affects postnatal development of hamsters in litters born to parents receiving long-term SkQ1 treatment. 2) SkQ1 accelerates maturation of juvenile females receiving the antioxidant treatment from 10 days of age. Parental pairs were kept in an outdoor vivarium under conditions close to natural. At the age of 25 days, juvenile males in litters born to parents treated daily with SkQ1 (50 nmol/kg per os) had higher epididymis mass. Both the size of a litter and SkQ1 affected epididymis mass in young males. Both the litter size and SkQ1 affected uterus

Plant litter inputs shape microbial residue carbon and metal bioavailability in zinc smelting slag: ¹³C-traced carbon partitioning in a metal-stressed substrate.

Zinc smelting slag is depleted in organic carbon but enriched in potentially toxic metals, creating dual constraints for ecological restoration. However, how plant litter carbon is partitioned among microbial- and plant-derived pools and whether these responses are accompanied by element-specific changes in metal bioavailability remains unclear. Here, we conducted a 90-day decomposition experiment with 13C-labeled ryegrass leaf and root litter in ryegrass-conditioned slag, combining 13C tracing with organic carbon fractionation, phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) and amino-sugar biomarkers, lignin

Maternal intestinal L. vaginalis facilitates embryo implantation and survival through enhancing uterine receptivity in sows.

BACKGROUND: The embryo implantation quality during early pregnancy is the predominant factor for embryo survival and litter performance in sows. Gut microbiota is demonstrated to show a correlation to pregnancy outcomes by participating in regulating maternal metabolism. However, the specific functional microbiota and its mechanical effects on regulating embryo implantation and survival remain unclear. The objective of this study was to clarify whether embryo implantation and litter performance were affected by maternal intestinal microbiota, and to identify specific microbial communities and

A model for economic comparison of swine insemination programs.

Optimal artificial insemination schedules are those that result in a high farrowing rate and litter size, while minimizing costs of semen and labor by avoiding unnecessary inseminations. A simulation model programmed in a commercial spreadsheet was developed to permit comparison of alternative schedules. Farrowing rate and litter size for a particular schedule were dependent on the timing of insemination relative to the time of ovulation. Economic return was calculated by multiplying the number of pigs born per bred sow by $33.00 and subtracting the cost of producing a litter of pigs and raisi

Efficiency of laparoscopic artificial insemination in goats: impact of laparoscopic insemination sheath needle design.

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic artificial insemination (LAI) is widely used in goat breeding, yet the influence of sheath needle design on reproductive outcomes remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of three different LAI sheath designs (IMV, Minitube, and TLRI) on pregnancy rate, kidding rate, and average litter size in Alpine does. METHODS: A total of 300 Alpine does (2-3 years old) were enrolled in two experiments. In Experiment 1, does were inseminated into either the middle-horn (M-H) or the horn-body junction (H-BJ) of one uterine horn using each of the three sheath type

Resource availability alters breeding strategies in a small mammal community.

Following a resource pulse, animals may finance reproduction by consuming concurrently available resources (income breeding) or by storing resources for future reproduction (capital breeding). Understanding how these reproductive strategies are used is important for determining the ecological mechanisms that structure timing of reproduction and that drive interannual population fluctuations in animals. We gathered a reproductive dataset for five small mammal species over a 12-year period in Northeastern USA during which six masting events of American beech (Fagus grandifolia) and eastern hemlo

[Real-time analysis of parturition in bitches of a medium-sized breed].

OBJECTIVE: Observation of the birth processes in healthy bitches under controlled conditions. The primary aim was to gain more insight into the natural birth process. Additional goal was to determine under which circumstances caregivers seek veterinary assistance. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data regarding length of gestation, the course of the parturition process, litter size, as well as neonatal characteristics were collected from 345 Boxer bitches. A real-time evaluation supplied the data concerning the birth process itself. Statistical analysis included single- and multi-factor variance analyse

Stereotypic behaviour predicts reproductive performance and litter sex ratio in giant pandas.

Breeding and welfare problems confront many conservation breeding programs. Stereotypies-repetitive, unvarying, functionless behaviours -are common abnormal behaviours that often arise in suboptimal conditions. While the role of stereotypies in welfare assessment is well studied, few investigations address the relationship between stereotypic behaviour and reproduction. We examined the correlation between stereotypic behaviour and reproductive performance in 101 giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). High stereotyping males copulated more and produced more cubs, suggesting that highly sexually

Oxidative stress programming in a rat model of postnatal early overnutrition--role of insulin resistance.

Postnatal early overfeeding (EO) is related to later development of overweight and other metabolic disorders. As oxidative stress is implicated in most human diseases, as obesity and diabetes, we decided to study some parameters related to oxidative stress and insulin signaling in liver from EO animals in adult life. To induce EO, litter size was reduced to three pups per litter (SL: small litter) and groups with normal litter size (NL:10 pups per litter) were used as control. After weaning, rats had free access to standard diet and water. Body weight and food intake were monitored daily and o

Exploring Personality Traits Associated with Reproductive Success in Captive Female Alpine Musk Deer (Moschus chrysogaster).

Animal personalities, reflecting consistent individual behavioral differences, are increasingly recognized as key factors influencing fitness. However, their role in the reproductive success of endangered ungulates remains poorly understood. In this study, 17 personality traits, including "Clumsy", "Dominant", "Vigilant", "Affiliative" and so on, were assessed in 123 adult female captive Alpine musk deer (Moschus chrysogaster) using a scale-based personality rating method. We explored the relationships between these personality traits and reproductive fitness indicators, including litter size,

Assessment of physical traits of rat offspring derived from mothers exposed to dioxin.

Negative effects of dioxin action are associated with limited abilities of their bio-degradation along with continuously increasing production and long-term bio-accumulation of those toxins in living organisms. Dioxins penetrate through placenta to fetus indicating indirect toxic effects on offspring of mothers exposed to the action of these toxins. During lactation a significant part of dioxins is excreted from organism with milk, which contributes to further accumulation of those compounds and multiple exceeding of maximal permissible dose of dioxins in newborns feeding with mother's milk. Mice in utero while their mother is lactating suffer higher frequency of deficient corpus callosum.

Mice of the inbred strain BALB/cCF which were conceived during the post-partum estrus and developed in utero while their mother was nursing a previous litter had twice the frequency of agenesis or deficiency of corpus callosum as their close relatives which did not overlap with another litter. There was no harmful effect of overlapping litters on body or whole brain size, so the phenomenon must have resulted from some aspect of maternal environment other than quantity of nutrition.

Effects of litter from antimicrobial-fed broiler chickens on soil bacterial community structure and diversity.

This study examined changes in soil bacterial community composition and diversity in response to fertilization with litter from chickens fed a diet without antibiotics and with bambermycin, penicillin, bacitracin, salinomycin, or mix of salinomycin and bacitracin. Litter (27.5 T/ha) was applied to 24 agricultural plots in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia. Nonfertilized plots were used as a negative control. Soil samples collected from the studied plots were used to quantify Escherichia coli by plate counts, and Clostridium perfringens by qPCR. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed fo

Reproductive performance of weaned sows after single fixed-time artificial insemination under a tropical climate: Influences of season and insemination technique.

We evaluated the reproductive performance of sows after single fixed-time AI under a tropical climate and investigated the influences of season and insemination technique on the efficacy of single fixed-time AI. After weaning, the sows were divided into CONTROL (n = 212) and FIXED-TIME (n = 212) groups. Sows in the CONTROL group were inseminated at 12 and 36 h after the onset of oestrus, while sows in the FIXED-TIME group were administered 10 μg of GnRH at 72 h after weaning and were inseminated 32 h later. Reproductive performance parameters, including total born, born alive, mummified foetus

Restoration of on-time embryo implantation corrects the timing of parturition in cytosolic phospholipase A2 group IVA deficient mice.

Cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2, PLA2G4A) catalyzes the release of arachidonic acid for prostaglandin synthesis by cyclooxygenase 1 (PTGS1) and cyclooxygenase 2 (PTGS2). Mice with Pla2g4a deficiency have parturition delay and other reproductive deficits, including deferred onset of implantation, crowding of implantation sites, and small litters. In this study, we examined the contribution of PLA2G4A to parturition in mice. Pla2g4a mRNA and protein expression were discretely localized in the term and preterm uterine luminal epithelium and colocalized with Ptgs1, but not Ptgs2, expression. The

Neonatal overfeeding alters adult anxiety and stress responsiveness.

The neonatal nutritional environment is critical for programming the systems regulating body weight, and an inappropriate nutritional environment in early life can lead to overweight or obesity later on. In this study we demonstrate that changes to the neonatal nutritional environment, induced by changing the litter size in which the animal is raised, can alter not only body weight into adulthood, but also anxiety behaviours and stress responsiveness. These effects appear to be somewhat sex-dependent, affecting female rats more strongly than males. Thus, Wistar rats raised in small litters, wh

Overweight during lactation and its implications for biometric, nutritional and cardiovascular parameters of young and adult male and female rats.

Litter size reduction can induce early overnourishment, being an attractive experimental model to study short- and long-term consequences of childhood obesity. Epidemiological data indicate sex differences regarding cardiometabolic disorders and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The present study aimed to describe biometric, nutritional and cardiovascular changes related to neonatal overweight promoted by litter size reduction in young and adult Wistar rats of both sexes. Litter adjustment to eight or four pups/mother (1:1 male-to-female ratio) gave, respectively, control and overweight groups. Bod
