Contact with livestock--a protective effect against allergies and asthma?

BACKGROUND: A 'protective farm factor' possibly related to livestock exposure is hypothesized to reduce the risk for allergic sensitization. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether 4-H club youth, who have opportunities for contact with livestock through club activities, have reduced risks of respiratory and allergic symptoms according to residence on a farm or exposure to livestock. METHODS: A cross-sectional postal survey was completed by British Columbia 4-H members 8-20 years of age; a subset underwent skin prick testing as well. The association of farm residence an

An overview of genomics research and its impact on livestock reproduction.

The amount of information currently available about the genomes of many livestock species, especially cattle and pigs, has increased dramatically in the past few years and the rate of its accumulation will continue to increase. A large number of scientific 'tools' is currently available for research aimed at understanding biological processes important to livestock production. These resources are being used to understand biological processes regulating reproduction, body composition and immune function in all livestock species. This research will create many opportunities to develop new tools

Serological survey of leptospirosis in livestock animals in the Lesser Antilles.

A serological survey was performed of 1788 cattle, goats and sheep on 13 islands in the Lesser Antilles. Sera were tested by microscopic agglutination (MAT) using a panel of 22 live antigens. Evidence of past exposure, at a titer of > or = 100, was found in 101 animals (5.6%). Antibodies were more common in cattle and goats (7.2% in each) than in sheep (1.7%). Seroprevalence was highest in cattle in Martinique (20%) and in goats in St. Vincent (23%). The predominant serogroups were Sejroe (largely confined to cattle in Martinique), Autumnalis, Icterohaemorrhagiae, Grippotyphosa, and Cynopteri.

[The efficacy of Salmocumarín rodenticide in livestock-raising and urban sites].

The activity in burrows at four different sites was calculated, and it went from 80 to 98% during pretreatment. For the first time in our country, average values of days/deaths of synanthropic rodents in natural conditions were obtained, and the reached values were between 16.50 and 19.06 after applying the biorodenticide. In the statistical analysis, a significant difference was found in the set of objectives related with days/deaths averages (H = 8.60*; p < 0.05). Moreover, no significant differences were found in percentages of residual activity in burrows (G = 8,27; p < 0.05). Results obta

Toxicoses in livestock from the hemlocks (Conium and Cicuta spp.).

The hemlocks, Conium maculatum (poison-hemlock) and Cicuta spp. (waterhemlock), are poisonous plants that cause sizeable losss to the livestock industry. Clinical signs of poisonhemlock toxicosis are similar in all species of livestock and include muscular weakness, incordination, trembling, initial central nervous system stimulation, depression and death from respiratory paralysis. Poison-hemlock also causes skeletal defects in the offspring of cattle, pigs and sheep and cleft palate in pigs when ingested during specific periods of gestation. The primary toxicants in poison-hemlock are coniin

The effects of war on the control of diseases of livestock in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe).

The disruption of veterinary services in the tribal areas of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) during seven years of conflict resulted in serious epidemics of disease. The cessation of dipping was followed by the death of an estimated one million cattle from tick-borne disease. Heavy mortality followed the disruption of control measures for trypanosomiasis. Foot-and-mouth disease and anthrax spread widely in the tribal areas. Rabies, normally restricted to areas bordering Botswana and Mocambique, became widespread. A marked increase in human deaths from anthrax and rabies occurred.

Q fever and toxoplasmosis in South African livestock and wildlife: a retrospective study on seropositivity, sporadic abortion, and stillbirth cases in livestock caused by Coxiella burnetii.

BACKGROUND: Q fever and toxoplasmosis are economically important zoonoses as they cause considerable losses in livestock (cattle, sheep and goats) and wildlife (antelopes, giraffes, lions, and cheetahs) through reproductive disorders such as abortions and stillbirths. Q fever and toxoplasmosis testing in South Africa is conducted by the Agricultural Research Council-Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (ARC-OVR). However, both zoonoses are understudied and not monitored in South Africa as they are not considered controlled or notifiable diseases in the Animal Disease Act 35 of 1984. A retrospecti

Molecular identification of Giardia assemblages in livestock from Jahrom, Iran.

Giardia is a widespread intestinal protozoan infecting both humans and livestock, and is notable for its zoonotic transmission potential. This study aimed to assess the genetic assemblages of Giardia in cattle, sheep, and goats slaughtered in Jahrom, Iran. A total of 540 fecal samples from slaughtered 90 cattle, 247 sheep, and 203 goats were initially screened for Giardia cysts using microscopy and nested PCR targeting the glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh) gene was performed. Microscopic analysis of fecal samples revealed that 35 samples (6.5%) were positive for Giardia cysts. The overall prevalen

Can integrated crop-livestock systems reduce tick infestation in cattle?

High levels of cattle tick (Rhipicephalus microplus) infestation cause production losses and increase livestock costs. Based on the hypothesis that the space-time rotation characteristic of integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS) decreases tick populations in pastures and, consequently, reduces cattle infestation, this study evaluated infestation score (IS), number of acaricide applications (NAA), and average daily weight gain (ADWG) of beef steers grazing under four ICLS. The study was carried out with Angus steers in southern Brazil over three consecutive years (2017-2020). Animals were man

Rabies Outbreak among Livestock in a Pastoralist Community, Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Rabies still poses a significant health problem in most of African countries, where the majority of the cases result from dog bites. The situations in the marginalized pastoral areas were not well documented. CASE: In September 2015, rabid wild fox entered the pastoralist village and bit a domestic dog. The victim dog had turned rabid after four months and bit livestock, and rabies outbreak occurred in the family livestock. Consequently, one bull, one lactating cow, one calf, two donkeys and one heifer died of outbreak. The head of one heifer was removed and transported within 24

Antimicrobial-resistant Enterobacteriaceae recovered from companion animal and livestock environments.

Antimicrobial-resistant bacteria represent an important concern impacting both veterinary medicine and public health. The rising prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), AmpC beta-lactamase, carbapenemase (CRE) and fluoroquinolone-resistant Enterobacteriaceae continually decreases the efficiency of clinically important antibiotics. Moreover, the potential for zoonotic transmission of antibiotic-resistant enteric bacteria increases the risk to public health. Our objective was to estimate the prevalence of specific antibiotic-resistant bacteria on human contact surfaces in various

Current drivers and future directions of global livestock disease dynamics.

We review the global dynamics of livestock disease over the last two decades. Our imperfect ability to detect and report disease hinders assessment of trends, but we suggest that, although endemic diseases continue their historic decline in wealthy countries, poor countries experience static or deteriorating animal health and epidemic diseases show both regression and expansion. At a mesolevel, disease is changing in terms of space and host, which is illustrated by bluetongue, Lyme disease, and West Nile virus, and it is also emerging, as illustrated by highly pathogenic avian influenza and ot

Rift Valley fever outbreak in livestock in Kenya, 2006-2007.

We analyzed the extent of livestock involvement in the latest Rift Valley fever (RVF) outbreak in Kenya that started in December 2006 and continued until June 2007. When compared with previous RVF outbreaks in the country, the 2006-07 outbreak was the most extensive in cattle, sheep, goats, and camels affecting thousands of animals in 29 of 69 administrative districts across six of the eight provinces. This contrasted with the distribution of approximately 700 human RVF cases in the country, where over 85% of these cases were located in four districts; Garissa and Ijara districts in Northeaste
