Convergent evolution of skin surface microarchitecture and increased skin hydrophobicity in semi-aquatic anole lizards.

Animals that habitually cross the boundary between water and land face specific challenges with respect to locomotion, respiration, insulation, fouling and waterproofing. Many semi-aquatic invertebrates and plants have developed complex surface microstructures with water-repellent properties to overcome these problems, but equivalent adaptations of the skin have not been reported for vertebrates that encounter similar environmental challenges. Here, we document the first evidence of evolutionary convergence of hydrophobic structured skin in a group of semi-aquatic tetrapods. We show that the s

A non-invasive method for semen collection and evaluation in small and median size lizards.

The aim of this study was to develop a non-invasive procedure to stimulate ejaculation in median and small lizards for semen collection. After semen collection, we applied a battery of tests to assess the motility (wave and progressive), viability (eosin-nigrosin stain), morphology (normal/abnormal), sperm concentration and ejaculate number, seminal volume and colour. We obtained this fluid from all males of the four species of sceloporine lizards (n = 30) and one species of Mexican horned lizards (n = 7). We found that semen from all males had a liquid-like consistency and a milky-white appea

Fossilized venom: the unusually conserved venom profiles of Heloderma species (beaded lizards and gila monsters).

Research into snake venoms has revealed extensive variation at all taxonomic levels. Lizard venoms, however, have received scant research attention in general, and no studies of intraclade variation in lizard venom composition have been attempted to date. Despite their iconic status and proven usefulness in drug design and discovery, highly venomous helodermatid lizards (gila monsters and beaded lizards) have remained neglected by toxinological research. Proteomic comparisons of venoms of three helodermatid lizards in this study has unravelled an unusual similarity in venom-composition, despit

Coherent reflection without traveling waves: on the origin of long-latency otoacoustic emissions in lizards.

Lizard ears produce otoacoustic emissions with characteristics often strikingly reminiscent of those measured in mammals. The similarity of their emissions is surprising, given that lizards and mammals manifest major differences in aspects of inner ear morphology and function believed to be relevant to emission generation. For example, lizards such as the gecko evidently lack traveling waves along their basilar membrane. Despite the absence of traveling waves, the phase-gradient delays of gecko stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs) are comparable to those measured in many mammals.

High incidence of lymphoid neoplasia in a colony of Egyptian spiny-tailed lizards (Uromastyx aegyptius).

Hematopoietic malignancies are the most commonly reported neoplasms in lizards, occurring sporadically as in other reptiles. An unusually high incidence of lymphoid neoplasia occurred in a collection of Egyptian spiny-tailed lizards (Uromastyx aegyptius) from 1993-2001. Eight of 15 lizards necropsied at the Louisville Zoological Garden (53%) had multicentric lymphoma. Immunohistochemistry was not useful in characterizing the lineage of normal or neoplastic lymphocytes. By light and electron microscopy (EM), the neoplasms had plasmacytoid morphologic features suggesting B-cell origin, although

Why savannah monitor lizards hyperventilate during activity: a comparison of model predictions and experimental data.

The functional and structural factors that limit maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) in lizards are not completely understood. Using an integrative model describing the interactive nature of the individual oxygen transport conductances, we performed an analysis of the oxygen transport system in the highly aerobic lizard Varanus exanthematicus with specific reference to the sensitivity of VO2 max to potential limitations in the ventilatory system. Our analysis predicts that DLO2 must increase more than three-fold at VO2 max and even with this increase in DLO2 , the VO2 max may be sensitive to facto

Differences in protein expression in the subcommissural organ of normal and lordotic lizards (Agama impalearis).

Lordosis, a skeletal malformation, is characterized by abnormal curvature of the vertebral column. Involvement of the subcommissural organ (SCO) in the correct development of the axial skeleton via the thread-like Reissner's fiber (RF) has been suggested. However, the functional significance of the SCO and RF in these mechanisms remains, to date, little understood. To detect eventual changes in the SCO of reptiles bearing a naturally occurring skeletal malformation, we aimed here at investigating with immunohistochemistry RF glycoprotein and immediate early gene expression in the SCO of normal

Pineal transplantation to the brain of pinealectomized lizards: effects on circadian rhythms of locomotor activity.

Pinealectomized lizards (Podarcis sicula) whose locomotor rhythms were recorded in constant temperature (29 degrees C) and darkness were subdivided into 2 groups of hosts: Each belonging to the 1st group (experimentals) received from a donor a pineal gland, and each belonging to the 2nd one (controls) received a piece of cerebellum. Pineal transplantation induced drastic changes in the free-running period (tau) of locomotor rhythms, which were significantly greater than the tau changes induced by cerebellum transplantation. Either application or removal of melatonin implants left the locomotor

[Development in mosquitoes of 3 filaria of the South American lizards of the genus Oswaldofilaria].

The development of O. petersi, O. belemensis and O. spinosa is similar to that of O. bacillaris: the larvae are in the adipose tissue of various mosquitoes; the infective stages are characterized by the longitudinal salient ridges of the cuticule, the long tail ended by two lappets, the well-developed glandular oesophagus; the female genital anlage lies in the anterior half part of the body, but is not very far from the median line. This character opposes these species to the other viviparous Filariae and stresses the originality of the Oswaldofilariinar.

Genomic targets of hurricane-induced selection on clinging performance in an island lizard.

A central goal of evolutionary biology is to understand the molecular mechanisms that enable adaptive responses to novel environmental pressures. Extreme weather events like natural disasters can have catastrophic impacts on wildlife via habitat destruction, mortality,1,2,3,4,5,6 population displacement,6,7 and natural selection,1,2,5,8,9 even shaping broad biogeographic patterns of local adaptation on phylogenetic scales.10,11 However, few studies have investigated the functional changes in organismal performance or genomic targets associated with responses to such events.2,12,13,14 Here, we

The Clot Thickens: Differential Coagulotoxic and Cardiotoxic Activities of Anguimorpha Lizard Venoms.

Despite their evolutionary novelty, lizard venoms are much less studied in comparison to the intense research on snake venoms. While the venoms of helodermatid lizards have long been assumed to be for defensive purposes, there is increasing evidence of toxic activities more useful for predation than defence (such as paralytic neurotoxicity). This study aimed to ascertain the effects of Heloderma, Lanthanotus, and Varanus lizard venoms on the coagulation and cardiovascular systems. Anticoagulant toxicity was demonstrated for the Varanus species studied, with the venoms prolonging clotting times

Sublethal pesticide exposure influences behaviour, but not condition in a widespread Australian lizard.

Assessment of non-target impacts of pesticides used widely in agriculture and pest management rarely considers reptiles. Despite their integral role in all ecosystems, particularly arid ecosystems, reptiles are not included in risk assessments. Two pesticides used in agricultural pest management are fipronil and fenitrothion. Here, we used a field-based BACI design experiment in semi-arid Australia to investigate the impact of these pesticides on basic physiological and behavioural parameters of a common arid-zone lizard species, Pogona vitticeps. Fipronil and fenitrothion were applied at ecol

Environment-Dependent Variation in Gut Microbiota of an Oviparous Lizard (Calotes versicolor).

Vertebrates maintain complex symbiotic relationships with microbiota living within their gastrointestinal tracts which reflects the ecological and evolutionary relationship between hosts and their gut microbiota. However, this understanding is limited in lizards and the spatial heterogeneity and co-occurrence patterns of gut microbiota inside the gastrointestinal tracts of a host and variations of microbial community among samples remain poorly understood. To address this issue and provide a guide for gut microbiota sampling from lizards, we investigated the bacteria in three gut locations of

Spermiogenesis in the imbricate alligator lizard, Barisia imbricata (Reptilia, Squamata, Anguidae).

Although the events of spermiogenesis are commonly studied in amniotes, the amount of research available for Squamata is lacking. Many studies have described the morphological characteristics of mature spermatozoa in squamates, but few detail the ultrastructural changes that occur during spermiogenesis. This study's purpose is to gain a better understanding of the subcellular events of spermatid development within the Imbricate Alligator Lizard, Barisia imbricata. The morphological data presented here represent the first complete ultrastructural study of spermiogenesis within the family Anguid

Monitor lizard bite-induced acute kidney injury--a case report.

Envenomations by venomous lizards are rare. Monitor lizard bite-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) is a previously unreported complication in humans. A 55-year-old female was bitten on her right leg during farming activity by a monitor lizard (Varanus bengalensis). The patient experienced severe local pain and bleeding from the wound, coagulopathy, hemolysis, rhabdomyolysis, sepsis, and AKI. Patient was treated with supportive care and peritoneal dialysis but succumbed to a sudden cardiac arrest. Post mortem kidney biopsy revealed pigment induced-acute tubular injury. AKI after monitor lizard e

Study of adult neurogenesis in the Gallotia galloti lizard during different seasons.

In a previous study we found a seasonal distribution of cell proliferation (the first stage of adult neurogenesis) in the telencephalic ventricular walls of the adult Gallotia galloti lizard. The aim of the present work was to determine the influence of seasonality on the subsequent migration of the resulting immature neurons. We used wild animals injected with bromodeoxyuridine and kept in captivity within 30 days. To confirm the neuronal identity of these cells, we used double immunohistochemical 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) and doublecortin (DCX, an early neuronal marker) labeling, as wel

Entamoeba invadens myositis in a common water monitor lizard (Varanus salvator).

Amoebiasis is one of the most common protozoal diseases of reptiles, but amoebic myositis has not been reported in any animal species. An 11-year-old, male common water monitor lizard (Varanus salvator) was found dead with several subacute ulcerated skin wounds. Gross examination revealed multiple discrete to coalescing, white-yellow to gray, caseous foci scattered in the skeletal muscles and liver. The mucosa of small intestine was thickened, red, and contained many variably sized, dark red ulcers, with depressed and hemorrhagic centers. Histopathologic examination revealed severe necrotizing

Effects of leptin administration on the endocrine pancreas and liver in the lizard Podarcis sicula.

In this study, we investigated the presence of leptin receptor in pancreatic islets and the effect of exogenous leptin administration in Podarcis sicula on glucose metabolism. Our data show the presence of leptin receptor immunoreactivity in the endocrine pancreas suggesting that leptin may act at a peripheral level as previously postulated in mammals. The effects of short- and long-term and dose-response treatment with supraphysiological concentrations of leptin on circulating levels of insulin, glucagon and glucose in the blood have been evaluated. Taken together, our results indicate that l
