The Role of the Autonomic Nervous System in Epilepsy and Migraine: A Narrative Review.

Autonomic symptoms may be local and general clinical manifestations of both epilepsy and migraine caused by the dysfunction of brain areas best known as the central autonomic network. Despite their prevalence, autonomic signs are often misdiagnosed and their treatment is undervalued. This review aims to describe the autonomic manifestations reported during seizures and migraineur attacks according to their presentation, focusing on the role of the central autonomic network (CAN) and on the parasympathetic outflow that often-induced cranial autonomic symptoms (CAS) during migraineur attacks. Characterizing the discriminability of visual categorical information in strongly connected voxels.

Functional brain responses are strongly influenced by connectivity. Recently, we demonstrated a major example of this: category discriminability within occipitotemporal cortex (OTC) is enhanced for voxel sets that share strong functional connectivity to distal brain areas, relative to those that share lesser connectivity. That is, within OTC regions, sets of 'most-connected' voxels show improved multivoxel pattern discriminability for tool-, face-, and place stimuli relative to voxels with weaker connectivity to the wider brain. However, understanding whether these effects generalize to other

Cerebellar repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation attenuates essential tremor by modulating visuomotor network connectivity.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying cerebellar repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in essential tremor (ET) using source-level electroencephalography (EEG) phase-locking value analysis. METHODS: EEG recordings and clinical assessments of ET patients (n = 20) before and after 4-week bilateral cerebellar rTMS were studied and evaluated for correlations. Brain source activities were reconstructed using standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (LORETA). Functional connectivity and local network metrics in the alpha band (8-13

Network structure and transcriptomic vulnerability shape atrophy in frontotemporal dementia.

Connections among brain regions allow pathological perturbations to spread from a single source region to multiple regions. Patterns of neurodegeneration in multiple diseases, including behavioural variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), resemble the large-scale functional systems, but how bvFTD-related atrophy patterns relate to structural network organization remains unknown. Here we investigate whether neurodegeneration patterns in sporadic and genetic bvFTD are conditioned by connectome architecture. Regional atrophy patterns were estimated in both genetic bvFTD (75 patients, 247 contr

Power of heterogeneous computing as a vehicle for implementing E(3) medical decision support systems.

A computer system of PCs, workstations, minicomputers etc. connected together via a local area network or wide area network represents a large pool of computational power. Our aim is to use this power for the implementation of an E(3) (efficiency, effectiveness, efficacy) medical decision support system, which can be based on different models, the best providing an explanation together with an accurate and reliable response. One of the most viable among models is decision trees, already used for many medical decision-making purposes. In this paper, we present a parallel implementation of a gen

User-based representation of time-resolved multimodal public transportation networks.

Multimodal transportation systems, with several coexisting services like bus, tram and metro, can be represented as time-resolved multilayer networks where the different transportation modes connecting the same set of nodes are associated with distinct network layers. Their quantitative description became possible recently due to openly accessible datasets describing the geo-localized transportation dynamics of large urban areas. Advancements call for novel analytics, which combines earlier established methods and exploits the inherent complexity of the data. Here, we provide a novel user-base

Resting-state neural correlates of visual Gestalt experience.

Subjective perceptual experience is influenced not only by bottom-up sensory information and experience-based top-down processes, but also by an individual's current brain state. Specifically, a previous study found increased prestimulus insula and intraparietal sulcus (IPS) activity before participants perceived an illusory Gestalt (global) compared with the non-illusory (local) interpretation of a bistable stimulus. That study provided only a snapshot of the brain state that favors the illusory interpretation. In the current study, we tested whether areas that differentiate between the illus

Graph analysis of guilt processing network highlights links with subclinical anxiety and self-blame.

Maladaptive forms of guilt, such as excessive self-blame, are common characteristics of anxiety and depressive disorders. The underlying network consists of multiple associative areas, including the superior anterior temporal lobe (sATL), underlying the conceptual representations of social meaning, and fronto-subcortical areas involved in the affective dimension of guilt. Nevertheless, despite understanding the circuitry's anatomy, network-level changes related to subclinical anxiety and self-blaming behaviour have not been depicted. To fill this gap, we used graph theory analyses on a resting

Why Does Tardive Dyskinesia Have Oro-facial Predominance? A Network Analysis.

Tardive dyskinesia is a involuntary hyperkinetic disorder which usually occurs in older patients after long-term treatment with antipsychotic drugs. These dyskinesias are mostly irreversible and are frequently expressed in the tongue, cheeks, mandible, perioral area and other regions of the face. In this theoretical study we asked the question, why does tardive dyskinesia often have orofacial predominance? What might be the underlying neural network structure which contributes to this propensity? Graph analysis of high-level cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical network structure suggests a connect

Impairment of a parieto-premotor network specialized for handwriting in writer's cramp.

Handwriting with the dominant hand is a highly skilled task singularly acquired in humans. This skill is the isolated deficit in patients with writer's cramp (WC), a form of dystonia with maladaptive plasticity, acquired through intensive and repetitive motor practice. When a skill is highly trained, a motor program is created in the brain to execute the same movement kinematics regardless of the effector used for the task. The task- and effector-specific symptoms in WC suggest that a problem particularly occurs in the brain when the writing motor program is carried out by the dominant hand. I

Functional brain network analysis in patients with upper-limb spasticity after stroke.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke ranks as the second leading cause of death and disability worldwide, with the resulting upper-limb spasticity severely impairing patients' motor function and quality of life. However, existing clinical assessment scales exhibit a degree of subjectivity, and research into the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying spasticity remains insufficient. Brain network analysis offers a novel perspective for investigating the neural mechanisms associated with spasticity. METHODS: Eight patients with upper limb spasticity due to stroke (MAS grades 1-2) and eight healthy controls w

Mapping migraine to a common brain network.

Inconsistent findings from migraine neuroimaging studies have limited attempts to localize migraine symptomatology. Novel brain network mapping techniques offer a new approach for linking neuroimaging findings to a common neuroanatomical substrate and localizing therapeutic targets. In this study, we attempted to determine whether neuroanatomically heterogeneous neuroimaging findings of migraine localize to a common brain network. We used meta-analytic coordinates of decreased grey matter volume in migraineurs as seed regions to generate resting state functional connectivity network maps from

Impaired Topographical Organization of Functional Brain Networks in Parkinson's Disease Patients With Freezing of Gait.

Objective: This study aimed to explore alterations in the topological properties of the functional brain network in primary Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with freezing of gait (PD-FOG). Methods: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (Rs-fMRI) data were obtained in 23 PD-FOG patients, 33 PD patients without FOG (PD-nFOG), and 24 healthy control (HC) participants. The whole-brain functional connectome was constructed by thresholding the Pearson correlation matrices of 90 brain regions, and topological properties were analyzed by using graph theory approaches. Hybrid Quantum-Classical Predictive Modelling for Glioblastoma Survival: Addressing Data Scarcity in Resource-Constrained Neuro-Oncology.

OBJECTIVES: A hybrid quantum-classical machine learning framework was proposed to evaluate whether quantum mechanics could extract high-dimensional patterns from small, localized patient registries, bypassing the small-data bottleneck entirely. METHOD: An algorithmic pipeline bridging classical preprocessing with quantum state manipulation was designed. Eight core features comprising four structural MRI parameters (tumour volume, oedema index, necrotic core ratio, and perfusion intensity) and four molecular markers were mapped into a low-dimensional Hilbert space using quantum amplitude encod

High-Density EEG in a Charles Bonnet Syndrome Patient during and without Visual Hallucinations: A Case-Report Study.

Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a rare clinical condition characterized by complex visual hallucinations in people with loss of vision. So far, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the hallucinations remain elusive. This case-report study aims at investigating electrical activity changes in a CBS patient during visual hallucinations, as compared to a resting-state period (without hallucinations). Prior to the EEG, the patient underwent neuropsychological, ophthalmologic, and neurological examinations. Spectral and connectivity, graph analyses and signal diversity were applied to high-den

Focal electrical intracerebral stimulation of a face-sensitive area causes transient prosopagnosia.

Face perception is subtended by a large set of areas in the human ventral occipito-temporal cortex. However, the role of these areas and their importance for face recognition remain largely unclear. Here we report a case of transient selective impairment in face recognition (prosopagnosia) induced by focal electrical intracerebral stimulation of the right inferior occipital gyrus. This area presents with typical face-sensitivity as evidenced by functional neuroimaging right occipital face area (OFA). A face-sensitive intracerebral N170 was also recorded in this area, supporting its contributio

Highly synchronized cortical circuit dynamics mediate spontaneous pain in mice.

Cortical neural dynamics mediate information processing for the cerebral cortex, which is implicated in fundamental biological processes such as vision and olfaction, in addition to neurological and psychiatric diseases. Spontaneous pain is a key feature of human neuropathic pain. Whether spontaneous pain pushes the cortical network into an aberrant state and, if so, whether it can be brought back to a "normal" operating range to ameliorate pain are unknown. Using a clinically relevant mouse model of neuropathic pain with spontaneous pain-like behavior, we report that orofacial spontaneous pai

Nonlinear dynamical analysis of EEG and MEG: review of an emerging field.

Many complex and interesting phenomena in nature are due to nonlinear phenomena. The theory of nonlinear dynamical systems, also called 'chaos theory', has now progressed to a stage, where it becomes possible to study self-organization and pattern formation in the complex neuronal networks of the brain. One approach to nonlinear time series analysis consists of reconstructing, from time series of EEG or MEG, an attractor of the underlying dynamical system, and characterizing it in terms of its dimension (an estimate of the degrees of freedom of the system), or its Lyapunov exponents and entrop
