[Clinical indications for PET of the central nervous system: primary brain tumors, vascular and degenerative dementia].

Over the past 20 years morphologic imaging of various tumors and tissues experienced substantial progress by the introduction of ultrasonography, CT scanning and MRI. None of these techniques provide information on functional aspects. Positron-emission tomography (PET) now allows to measure local perfusion, oxygen extraction and glucose utilisation in different tissues. These 3 parameters do not necessarily develop in parallel and can potentially be differentiated by PET. Thus, they become detectable in brain tumors as well as in vascular and degenerative dementias and, therefore, directly per

Mapping calcium transients in the dendrites of Purkinje cells from the guinea-pig cerebellum in vitro.

1. A 10 X 10 photodiode array was used to detect stimulation-dependent absorbance changes simultaneously from many positions in the dendrite field of guinea-pig Purkinje cells which had been injected with the calcium indicator Arsenazo III in thin cerebellar slices. Signals from each element of the array were matched to positions on the cells by mapping them onto fluorescence photographs of Lucifer Yellow which had been co-injected into the cells with the Arsenazo III. 2. In response to intrasomatic stimulation the rising phase of the absorbance signals corresponded in time with the calcium sp

Deep Learning for Scalp-Level Nonlinear Source Separation in Electroencephalogram: A Comparative Evaluation of Spatiotemporal Architectures.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a common technique to measure field potentials of various brain regions, and event-related potentials (ERPs) reflect stimulus- or response-locked brain responses that are spatially distributed across the scalp due to volume conduction. However, accurately capturing stimulus specific ERPs from EEG remains a major challenge due to complex mixtures of ERPs from multiple stimulus sources. This study addresses the challenge of separating nonlinearly mixed ERPs in EEG data using synthetic and experimental datasets. We simulated synthetic ERP datasets with known ground

Preoperative network activity predicts the response to subthalamic DBS for Parkinson's disease.

Quantitative imaging markers to aid in the selection of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients for surgical interventions such as subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) are currently lacking. Using metabolic PET and network analysis we identified and validated a treatment-induced topography, termed STN StimNet. Stimulation-mediated changes in network expression correlated with concurrent motor improvement in independent STN-DBS cohorts scanned on and off stimulation. Moreover, STN StimNet measurements off stimulation correlated with local field potentials recorded from the STN, wherea

Brain-wide functional connectivity of face patch neurons during rest.

The brain is a highly organized, dynamic system whose network architecture is often assessed through resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) functional connectivity. The functional interactions between brain areas, including those observed during rest, are assumed to stem from the collective influence of action potentials carried by long-range neural projections. However, the contribution of individual neurons to brain-wide functional connectivity has not been systematically assessed. Here we developed a method to concurrently measure and compare the spiking activity of local neur

State-dependent variability of neuronal responses to transcranial magnetic stimulation of the visual cortex.

Electrical brain stimulation is a promising tool for both experimental and clinical applications. However, the effects of stimulation on neuronal activity are highly variable and poorly understood. To investigate the basis of this variability, we performed extracellular recordings in the visual cortex following application of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Our measurements of spiking and local field potential activity exhibit two types of response patterns which are characterized by the presence or absence of spontaneous discharge following stimulation. This variability can be partia

Seeded-Growth of ZIF-8 onto Magnetic Nanoparticles: Smart Nanocarriers with Ultrahigh Drug Loading for AMF-Triggered Release.

A seeded growth strategy was developed to synthesize core-shell magnetic metal-organic framework (MOF) composites for magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) and MHT-triggered drug delivery. Cubic or spherical iron oxide nanoparticles, with nanocubes selected for their superior MHT performance, were coated with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide to enable aqueous ZIF-8 shell growth. Shell thickness strongly influenced heating efficiency under alternating magnetic fields (AMFs), with thinner shells and cubic cores yielding enhanced MHT performance. Doxorubicin (Doxo) was used as a model chemotherapeutic drug a

Targeting Heterogeneous Findings in Neuronal Oscillations in Tinnitus: Analyzing MEG Novices and Mental Health Comorbidities.

Tinnitus is a prevalent phenomenon and bothersome for people affected by it. Its occurrence and maintenance have a clear neuroscientific tie and one aspect are differences in the neuronal oscillatory pattern, especially in auditory cortical areas. As studies in this field come to different results, the aim of this study was to analyze a large number of participants to achieve more stable results. Furthermore, we expanded our analysis to two variables of potential influence, namely being a novice to neuroscientific measurements and the exclusion of psychological comorbidities. Oscillatory brain

Charge and Solvent Effects on the Redox Behavior of Vanadyl Salen-Crown Complexes.

The incorporation of charged groups proximal to a redox active transition metal center can impact the local electric field, altering redox behavior and enhancing catalysis. Vanadyl salen (salen = N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneaminato)) complexes functionalized with a crown ether containing a nonredox active metal cation (V-Na, V-K, V-Ba, V-La, V-Ce, and V-Nd) were synthesized. The electrochemical behavior of this series of complexes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry in solvents with varying polarity and dielectric constant (ε) (acetonitrile, ε = 37.5; N,N-dimethylformamide, ε = 36.7; and d

Testing between the gunpowder fuse and the filling-hose analogy for mental curve tracing using electroencephalography: boom!

Curve tracing occurs when a line is followed covertly to accomplish a task, for example, to determine whether two landmarks are on the same line or not (could Highway 61 take Robert Johnson from New Orleans to St Louis?). Previous work suggests that attention either moves along the curve, momentarily activating local representations of the curve during this process, leaving little or no trace of this activation once attention has passed, or attention spreads along the curve, resulting in an activated state along the entire portion of the curve that was traced. We re-examined this issue using e

Electrically tunable spin-orbit interaction in an InAs nanosheet.

We report an experimental study of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in an epitaxially grown free-standing InAs nanosheet in a dual-gate field-effect device. Gate-transfer characteristic measurements show that independent tuning of the carrier density in the nanosheet and the potential difference across the nanosheet can be efficiently achieved with the use of a dual gate. The quantum transport characteristics of the InAs nanosheet are investigated by magnetoconductance measurements at low temperatures. It is shown that the electron transport in the nanosheet can be tuned from the weak antiloca

Basal ganglia theta power indexes trait anxiety in people with Parkinson's disease.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common and disabling in Parkinson's disease, with troublesome anxiety occurring in one-third of patients. Management of anxiety in Parkinson's disease is challenging, hampered by insufficient insight into underlying mechanisms, lack of objective anxiety measurements and largely ineffective treatments. In this study, we assessed the intracranial neurophysiological correlates of anxiety in patients with Parkinson's disease treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the laboratory and at home. We hypothesized that low-frequency (theta-alpha) activity would be assoc

Making the Genotypic Variation Visible: Hyperspectral Phenotyping in Scots Pine Seedlings.

Hyperspectral reflectance contains valuable information about leaf functional traits, which can indicate a plant's physiological status. Therefore, using hyperspectral reflectance for high-throughput phenotyping of foliar traits could be a powerful tool for tree breeders and nursery practitioners to distinguish and select seedlings with desired adaptation potential to local environments. We evaluated the use of 2 nondestructive methods (i.e., leaf and proximal/canopy) measuring hyperspectral reflectance in the 350- to 2,500-nm range for phenotyping on 1,788 individual Scots pine seedlings belo

A Tuned Microwave Resonant System for Subcutaneous Imaging.

A compact and planar imaging system was developed using a flexible polymer substrate that can distinguish subcutaneous tissue abnormalities, such as breast tumors, based on electromagnetic-wave interactions in materials where permittivity variations affect wave reflection. The sensing element is a tuned loop resonator operating in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band at 2.423 GHz, providing a localized high-intensity electric field that penetrates into tissues with sufficient spatial and spectral resolutions. The resonant frequency shifts and magnitudes of the reflection coeffici

An integrated experimental-computational electromagnetic-thermal framework for predicting bioheat response of the human head to wearable wireless devices.

The increasing use of wearable wireless devices operating in close proximity to the human body has raised the need for reliable assessment of electromagnetic exposure and associated thermal effects in biological tissue. In particular, wireless earbuds produce both electromagnetic energy absorption and device self-heating as potential sources of localized temperature elevation near the head. This study presents an integrated experimental-computational-electromagnetic-thermal framework for predicting the bioheat response of the human head. The approach combines infrared thermography measurements

An automated and portable magnetically-controlled microfluidic chip platform with dual detection modes for sensitive AFP quantification.

Early diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) depends on rapid, sensitive, and reliable immunoassays; however, conventional ELISA techniques are often limited by complex manual operations, prolonged assay durations, and insufficient sensitivity, which significantly impede the detection of low-abundance biomarkers at the early disease stage. In contrast, microfluidic technology minimizes reagent consumption, enables precise spatiotemporal control of reactions, and provides a versatile platform for developing magnetically guided, multi-step immunoassay systems suited for portable, on-site sc

A community based field research project investigating anaemia amongst young children living in rural Karnataka, India: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Anaemia is an important problem amongst young children living in rural India. However, there has not previously been a detailed study of the biological aetiology of this anaemia, exploring the relative contributions of iron, vitamin B12, folate and Vitamin A deficiency, inflammation, genetic haemoglobinopathy, hookworm and malaria. Nor have studies related these aetiologic biological factors to household food security, standard of living and child feeding practices. Barriers to conducting such work have included perceived reluctance of village communities to permit their children t

Non-Linear Dynamical Analysis of Resting Tremor for Demand-Driven Deep Brain Stimulation.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is currently the second most common neurodegenerative disease. One of the most characteristic symptoms of PD is resting tremor. Local Field Potentials (LFPs) have been widely studied to investigate deviations from the typical patterns of healthy brain activity. However, the inherent dynamics of the Sub-Thalamic Nucleus (STN) LFPs and their spatiotemporal dynamics have not been well characterized. In this work, we study the non-linear dynamical behaviour of STN-LFPs of Parkinsonian patients using ε -recurrence networks. RNs are a non-linear analysis tool that encodes th

Objective quantification of trabecular meshwork pigmentation and correlation to primary open-angle glaucoma disease severity.

PURPOSE: In this study, we further evaluated a unique early biomarker that has been demonstrated to be correlated with primary open-angle glaucoma in a pilot study. This novel biomarker correlated an increased ratio of pigmentation in the inferior trabecular meshwork (TM) compared to the superior TM with a greater degree of visual field loss in a small subset of patients. We evaluated this association in a larger group of patients. METHODS: This is a retrospective single-center analysis of Black and Afro-Latino patients that make up the local New York inner-city community of Advanced Eyecare

The potential of convolutional neural networks for identifying neural states based on electrophysiological signals: experiments on synthetic and real patient data.

Processing incoming neural oscillatory signals in real-time and decoding from them relevant behavioral or pathological states is often required for adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation (aDBS) and other brain-computer interface (BCI) applications. Most current approaches rely on first extracting a set of predefined features, such as the power in canonical frequency bands or various time-domain features, and then training machine learning systems that use those predefined features as inputs and infer what the underlying brain state is at each given time point. However, whether this algorithmic approa
